Before food became content, Anthony Bourdain wrote about the smoke, burns, chaos, loneliness, and camaraderie underneath it all. Kitchen Confidential reminded people that real life was messy, human, imperfect - and far more interesting than performance
Bourdain belonged to a disappearing world - one of dive bars, paperback guidebooks, kitchen pirates, long conversations, strange music, cheap train rides, and discovering places before algorithms discovered them for you. That’s why his work still hurts a little to revisit. It reminds people of a slower, more soulful world they fear might be fading.
Watching documentaries like Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain - and now even the upcoming biopic Tony - you realize people weren’t drawn to Bourdain because he was polished. They were drawn to him because he stayed curious, flawed, restless, and deeply human in a world increasingly obsessed with image and performance.

  • i'll just wait for the movie

    • Who do you think will play him?

      • Probably Dominic Sessa…….

      • They already got Dominic Sessa

    • They already made a sitcom with the same title in 2005.

  • Is that a machete in the photo?

    • Cool down, kitchen knives are exempt from the machete ban.

But back in the day I knew a few chefs, one who used to keep his knives in the car for "protection" (lived in a dodgy area), because even back then it was illegal to just roam around with a large knife. He kept a chef's hat in the car as well so, if he was ever pulled over, he could talk his way out of it.

  • great book

  • Great book - especially if you are a chef or have worked in commercial kitchens

  • RIP Anthony. Your intelligence, wit and humor are deeply missed. You should have just relocated to one the countries you loved, sad you didn't do that.

      Russia?

      • Nah, there are a few you could tell he loved and adored the people. If you know you know!

  • This that one guy???

  • He wrote a very interesting book about typhoid Mary. Worth checking out. Typhoid Mary was a cook and proved quite a continuous consternation to New York health authorities of the time. RIP Anthony.

  • Thanks OP, got one. I have listened to the audiobook 2x but paperback is even better

  • Good recommendation. I've just put a reserve on this one at my local library and look forward to reading it. Cheers!
