but then how do they line the pockets of conglomerates with taxpayer money?
- 16

If only we had a large untaxed group that could start paying some actual tax on the resources they are taking.
Sadly it would require a state government that isn't participating in the apprenticeship phase of their employment with says large untaxed groups
- 20

It is so sad that Australia's natural resources are used to enrich a select few, whilst her people have to fight for crumbs.
- 6

Sorry - untaxed?
Who exactly are you referring to?- 0

@Ezekiel2320: So - you mean taxed, but may not have made any profits…
Ignoring of course things like payment of payroll tax, land tax, GST, and various other taxes…- -2

The gas industry paid $21.9b in taxes last year, how much did you pay please?
- -2

@tsunamisurfer: The gas industry would like you to believe this. Their $21.9b figure (even if accurate) includes royalties, which are in effect a payment to the owners of a resource (the Australian people) for this particular input (the gas) to their production process. The gas industry needs to purchased this input just as it has to purchase other inputs such as labour.
Royalties can't be counted or seen as a tax just as a farmer's purchase of inputs such as fertiliser or diesel or electricity are not tax.- 4

Doesn't matter. Anything these days that reduces cost to people gets branded as "bUt InFlatiOn!!!"
- 0

Which is true. They could invest it in some sort of future fund because one day they'll end up like Victoria if everything is "free".
- 0

The gas distribution network was privatised in 2000. But electric companies are still owned by the state.
- 0

so they should give more money
- 0

Yah, but I need all my oil & gas shares to rise!
- 0

If it’s the same effect then what’s the difference where you get your $100 from?
- 0

Wouldn't it be easier for the government to just deduct $100 from the next car rego bill? (Then they could exclude electric cars if they wanted to be jerks)
- 24

Not every driver owns a car; some people own many.
- 19

businesses as well
- 0

And some people don’t bother or never find out these schemes. Freebies of these kinds are mere PR campaign. Govt doesn’t really care about people. Unnecessary spending like this one causes more inflation.
- 11

Wouldn't be easier on Roger Cook's wallet though, all the people who let it go unclaimed. Think of the state budget surplus! Plus brownie points for helping the Aussie battler's of the state with this
buy offscheme so win/win.- 4

Agreed…it’s sugar coating but $220m (2.2m registered licences in WA according to interwebs) doesn’t go far…mind you, id prefer it if they built something with the $$$ vs just giving it away for Friday night drinks. A new hospital wing or something might be a better way to spend the loot.
- 8

Best way to think
- 1

I would prefer that as we're 5 car family for 3 people. My mate down the road who's got 8 and it's just him and his wife
- -2

Yes but not all voters own a car. This way, they can win more votes using taxpayer money.
- 0

But motor vehicle charges will increase by 3.4 per cent and there will be a 5 per cent increase to the emergency services levy that is added to council rates so no doubt this will cancel it out.
- 10

Dang! That's gotta sting. Trust the government to always deliver a sting even when they are "helping"

Don’t. Just do not collect $100 when you pass GO. Vroom vroom!
- 9

Any deals on a $100 Toilet Paper 🧻 Support Payment for people with a toilet?
- -5

Username checks out.
- 3

Nice. Still 55 days to convert my license to WA
- -4

Please take that $100 and open a bloody hospital.
- 10

I rather them open up data center for AI, that use all fresh water and pollute the sky with multitude of diesel back up generators. All hail AI overlord
- 0

Yep. The one that's planned down the hill in Hazelmere is going to have 80 (yes, 80) diesel generators! For the population, we're only allowed to have new unreliable wind and solar power - no coal but an AI tech company can install all the fossil fuelled power that it wants. Bullshit and double standards and lies from both state and federal governments. We desperately need change.
- 0

Heretic, how dare you questioning the green initiative of AI company, you will have -99 on your digital id.
PS: My mate who is engineer, said they are flat out building stuff for coal mining expansion
- 0

@frewer: Coal mining is going well and expanding, it's just that we can't burn it here to to green policies - but if you beleive in MMGW, whether the coal is burnt in China or Australia is immaterial
- 0

You mean the one that has been withdrawn due to community backlash?
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/may/15/developer…
- 0

@reecho: That's the one and this is great news. I'm not particularly opposed to a data centre in that location but not what was proposed. I got the number of generators wrong, it was going to be 18, not 80 (someone told me that number and I failed to check it) generators. Still far too many anyway.
- 0

Let the bribes begin!
- 0

Meanwhile Victoria sores to record debt closing in on 200bn and has over 100,000 homeless
- -4

Plus 20% rego with a debt of 200B
- 0

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/956895
VIC got their own thing which is actually higher value than this WA incentive
- 4

soars? - or are your referring to the pain of massive debt?
- 0

by July, the $100 will only get you half a tank of fuel :(
- 0

I hope so. It’s nice having quiet roads.
- 0

Acting like bad parents treating kids with candy.
- 0

This isn't even enough for a full tank. This amount is a birthday present from family/friends..
- 0

The government is our friend ;)
- 0

Haha good one! XD
- 0

Inflation isn’t a problem.
- 0

I wish VIC would do the same
- 1

And add to the current debt.
- 1

So do it only if you are CFMEU, you say? Hmmmm
- -1

It's just putting $100 straight in the pockets of the fuel co's instead of saving it.
- 0

Buying votes again…
- 5

People are stupid - pay taxes and then happy to receive a tiny part of it back in the form of a "support payment", just like the Federal energy subsidiesl Buying votes with your own money…
- 6

And you would be even more stupid to think that without these 'support payments' that those increases wouldn't have happened ANYWAY. Better to get something compared to nothing back.
- -5

I never implied that?? The Government should just tax us less instead of using our own money to buy votes and hide inflation.
- 2

@Sim69: Lowering taxes?? We know that will never happen (of course I'm ALL for it). My point is that whatever increases in the pipeline is going to happen regardless of whether they give out all these 'support payments', so might as well take it.
- 0

I appreciate wa government trying to “help” with all the synergy bill relief in last few years and now this but I really wish they’d just keep the cash and use it for the state. For the love of god build another metro hospital as Fiona Stanley is already broken and at capacity after it’s only been around a decade and please fix the Kwinana freeway as it’s just blocked up from 6am-9:30am and 2:30pm-6pm every single weekday now it’s so frustrating!
- 4

All they have to do is spend a few hundred on keep left signs for all the road warriors who won’t move over blocking the right lane on the freeway
- 2

People dont like being told how it really is.

Thought it was $1000! Well, that's basically nothing and a complete waste of a system when money really needs to go elsewhere..
- 2

Hopefully, for all those kids who gets their license after July 2026 are also eligible.
- 0

Gift card and requiring a tracking app to do so? Yeah hard no.
How about Penny Wong give 30million to Australians for fuel relief.- 0

In for a Penny out for a pound. Two Wong's don't make a white.

Someone's probably said it already but all payments should be means tested. Wealthy people don't need free cash!!! 🤬 And the government needs to budget better in many areas!
It's well damn time they introduced a social security card for everyone! Automagically linked to taxation, payslips, super, Medicare, etc
- -2

You sound like someone who thinks $100k/year is wealthy lol
- 0

That's not wealthy 😆 not in today's currency, maybe 15 years ago. Not anymore!
But people exceeding 150-175k$/yr - yes that is!
- -2

It costs more to means test a subsidy.
- 0

Nothing like some government inflation
- 2

What a phenomenal way to push the price of petrol and diesel up further.
- 1

Is it applicable for L platers as well?
- 0

- 1

Yep, I have a happy 16yr old haha
- 0

This government is a joke. Screw us with CGT at the federal level and then buy state and federal votes by giving away money further fueling inflation. Never again am I voting labor.
- 3

Seems to be now the national Labor playbook, don't fix anything that's wrong with society or the economy, just borrow "free money" and throw it wildy at everyone. But I guess it works, they get voted in all as things get visibly worse. I would have thought totally broke Victoria would be a good cautionary tale about exactly why not to do this, when Vic can barely afford to operate the police and hospitals.
- -1

More bollocks from Cook and Saffiotti. I know WA has a big surplus but maybe use that to pay down some of the state debt rather than this nonsense. That's how you would really help us in the long term.
- 2

Every government seems to have decided record debt just doesn't matter at all.. and they have a disturbing number of chatgpt economists ready to defend the irresponsible practice.
- 1

All they think about is their chances in the next election
- 1

I was wondering how they would find a way to get everyone to sign up for digital id…..
- 3

for some people, $100 doesn't even cover the cost of a weeks worth of diesel (and thats just travelling to work and back)
- 0

Can I get when I use byd cars only?
- -1

BYD makes hybrids
- 0

Are they having an election over there already?
Seriously, invest all this "free money" in infrastructure or something useful, so you aren't just going to be borrowing that $100 back on credit just to get by during the bad times (much like bankrupt Victoria right now). Throwing away money during good times is what my gambling addict uncle would be expected to do, not a state government.
- 0

An an EV driver, I will feel guilty taking it.
- 0

Nah, not guilty, smug.
That pays for many thousands of kilometres of driving when mostly charging from solar :-)
And look how well second hand EV values are holding up these days. Once the general public realises that batteries last for 20+ years and service costs get lower as EVs age rather than higher as with ICE EVs will be proper "investments" ;-)
- 1

Yeah, that’s exactly where things seem to be heading.
As battery longevity becomes better understood and people see servicing costs staying low over time, EVs are starting to break the usual depreciation narrative. Not “investments” in the pure sense, but definitely a step change in long‑term value for cars.
- 0

Everyone in my family has EVs and we’ll get the $100. Just insanity
- 3

Vote buying in force.
- 1

Let me guess, we require Digital ID to be able to receive the handout. Another rotten carrot on a stick.

They should put the rates, licence, electricty, gas etc increase on hold for the next 5 years rather than hand out the cash.
