On sale is the new 9.7" model of the Redmi Pad 2. This is the 64GB storage variant and the 128GB variant is available for $269 from Xiaomi directly here. While this tablet certainly isn't a power house due to being limited to only 4GB of RAM, it's still an excellent choice for media playback thanks to it's smaller 9.7" screen size. Most tablets these days are too difficult to hold due to being 11", 12.7" and bigger)

Featuring 9.7" 2048x1280 IPS display with 120Hz refresh rate, 500-600nits brightness, HyperOS 3 (Android 16) with Google Play, Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 2 CPU, Adreno 610 GPU, 4GB RAM, 64GB UFS 2.2 storage, microSD card slot, 7600mAh battery with 18W USB-C charging, 3.5mm audio jack, Hi-Res audio, Bluetooth 5.0 and WiFi.

  • It has a great form factor, nice display, good CPU/GPU, decent audio, big battery, audio jack and microSD slot — ticked all the boxes for a budget media player

    • audio jack and microSD slot

      FTW 👌

    • Just how good is the IPS display? Want it for YouTube/Sport in max resolution.

      • IPS display shows more accurate colours and has wider viewing angles - great if you're sharing a screen. Motions and panning scenes are smoother with less judder on a 120Hz display

        • Ok thanks!

  • Much easier to stomach at this price considering the xiaoxin pad pro has been down to around the same price as direct from Xiaomi and has better specs.

    • Can you provide a direct link to support your comment please?

          • @Clear: Thanks, will wait for the price to come down again before pulling the trigger.

          • @Clear: Hopefully there are some better deals around end of financial year/11.11/black friday and whatnot, noticed it was fairly expensive in the last sale but put that down to just being a usual run of the mill AliExpress sale.

        • Sadly it's been getting more expensive since then, due to various factors including the new model replacing it (meaning the old one is no longer manufactured), lower remaining stock driving prices up, higher shipping costs, exchange rate changes and overall rising costs from China.

This is reflected in the overall price rises at AliExpress that I warned about in March and you can see it now already.

      • It frequently sold around the USD $160 and it was USD $155 in June 2025

For a very small price premium you're a significanlty better hardware upgrade:
        12.7-inch 2.9K LCD screen with a 144Hz refresh rate
An 8MP front camera and a 13MP rear camera
        RAM: 8GB
        Storage: 128GB
        Four JBL speakers, Dolby Atmos
        10200mAh battery.
        Android 15

      • I recently bought the Xiaonxin Pad Pro for around $220 after cashback from Temu during one of those 40% cashback deals from Shopback.

        • If you see a similar deal again kindly post in this forum.

        • How’d you find the installed operating system? Upgrade to alternate global version?

          • @AMK47: The one I bought came with the Global version, fully English menus and not too much bloatware. However, I don't think it will have OTA updates. You might be able to flash it with the Chinese ROM and change the menus to English but I read there are some issues with some menus still showing Chinese characters.

            • @rvsure: Only Chinese I have is drag from bottom search bar, everything else is in English.

  • Is this a good choice for a secondary tablet to run smart home apps?

  • Given the lack of RAM, probably only good for media consumption via Netflix etc? Probably not 'buttery smooth' for web browsing?

    • Not the same device … we have various Samsung galaxy A11+ in the family.
Mix of 6gb and 8gb ram and we can tell the difference there already. The extra ram does seem to make a difference.

  • The 11” seems better with 128gb for a bit extra money?

    • I believe 90hz screen on the 11" vs 120hz on the smaller one. May matter to some people.

    • Review says 11" come with non-AU charger. Not sure about 9.7" version.

    • Isn’t the 128gb version also 9.7”

  • Should I buy now or wait until Prime Day in July?

    • This is our exclusive launch offer designed specifically for our very first supporters. Would suggest grabbing it now and start enjoying it early without waiting for July

      • Bought one!

        • Great! May I suggest buying another? 🤔

      • Any plans for a 6GB RAM version? I really like the form factor as I want to upgrade an old 8" Lenovo tablet that I only use for web browsing in bed. 4GB will work for my use case today, but will the user experience slow down with the next few Android updates.

        • This model is only available with 4GB of RAM. We have the Redmi Pad 2 pro which comes with 6+128GB

          • @HanaLF: I don't see it in 9.7" size. Xiaomi China seems to have the following which would be a perfect tablet for me:
            https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/04/21/redmi-pad-3-se-launche…
            Key takeaway:
"The Redmi Pad 2 SE is priced at CNY 1,099 (~$160) for the 6GB+128GB variant, and it comes in Dark Grey and Silver shades. On the other hand, the 4G-enabled version costs CNY 1,399 (~$205) and can be bought only in Silver."

  • Hmmm I've been wanting a home assistant hub for a minute. Would this be good for that purpose? One device to control and rule them all.

  • Is this on par with Galaxy Tab A series?

    • The Tab A’s are good when you get them, but shit when you use it

  • This is potentially a sick emulation machine.

    • Only 4 ram tho

      • It's fine for PSP. Maybe even PS2.

  • Is this the 2025 model? Just wondering if I was to get it what is a suitable case

      1. The other model is 11"
      • Don't laugh, but I am using a Lenovo Tab M8 (TB-8505F) for bed time web browsing and it struggles. I also have an Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 12.7 (2023) which is fine for lounge use but just too unwieldly for using in bed. Will this do the job RAM wise as I am only doing simple multitasking such as switching between a web browser and an app such as BBC news or an ebook reader.

        • That model had 2GB and 3GB RAM variants. While this is only 4GB I'd expect it to be faster, especially with a better CPU.

          • @Clear: Yes, mine has 2GB. Deepseek V4 runs like a charm :)

  • No GPS

  • Bloatware on HyperOS will chew that 4GB RAM

    • Can't you get rid of em?

    • Interesting. I would not have expected that. I have a Xiaomi BE7000 router which has a very simple and lean OS. Is there a way to debloat?

      • How is the performance and range? I run 2 Redmi Ax6000 routers in a mesh and they have been brilliant with Google doing the heavy lifting on the chinese UI but I have been looking at the BE7000 as replacements

        • The Xiaomi BE7000 is excellent. Rock solid. The BE7000 has a faster processor and 2.4 Gig lan ports compared to the AX6000. It does not have WiFi 7 6Ghz channel support though.

        • "with Google doing the heavy lifting on the chinese UI"

LOL. Still the same UI on the BE7000. Check out their Xiaomi Home app though if not already done so,
which is more user friendly and allows for setting up guest WiFi which is strangely missing on the web interface.

    • My Redmi tablet has like no bloatware at all. The tablets aren't like the phones.

  • $229.31 ex gst on aliexpress

    • pretty sure nobody cares

      • They usually say iPhone. Again who cares.

    • And Samsung has copied apple for years while bullying most of their competition into extinction because of government backing. What's your point?

  • Would this be any good for getting clients to electronically sign documents? Any suggestions appreciated, thanks!

    • Yes, as it supports a dedicated Xiaomi Redmi Smart Pen that features 4096-level pressure sensitivity. That has to be bought separately but it is also comparable with cheap generic stylus for your purpose.

    • I would probably say no purely from a legal point of view as Xiaomi like Huawei are Chinese companies, with the potential for future geopolitical dramas. Samsung or Apple would be a better option. No idea from a technical perspective though.

    • some signing software/websites like docusign require GPS so I'm not sure if this would woork

  • Most tablets these days are too difficult to hold due to being 11", 12.7" and bigger)

How is that difficult to hold? Been using 12.9" iPad for media consumption for the last 7 years. Wouldn't want anything smaller.

    • With one hand sideways in bed? Less weight is easier to hold. Each to their own.

  • Is this decent for note taking?

  • Why torture yourself with a 4GB Android tablet? And pay when doing that as well.
Seriously, the RAM crisis is brutal.

  • Is this a deal? Or is that RRP?

    • It's a deal. RRP is $299

      • When will it expire?

        • 16/05 while stocks last

          • @HanaLF: Thank you.

            • @Snoots: Sorry typo. It will expire on 15/05

  • Sorry for the dumb question. Is there cellular service for this tablet? In specs it says it got 4G

    • @HanaLF kindly confirm

      • No. It's wifi only. Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen 2 is just the name of the CPU

        • Thank you

        • Does it work with Hotspot from mobile phone?

  • Ordered. Thanks Clear.

  • Looks like a good replacement for dads Samsung a7, with a dying charge port.

  • I bought one for dad. Can anyone suggest a case?

  • Still looking for a 8" tablet, anything lined up ?

  • Maybe a dumb question, but does this have Play Store? I recall previous Xiaomi devices not having Google Play, coming from China.

How do you guys reckon this will go for reading comics?

    • Always read the damn description! From the OP -

HyperOS 3 (Android 16) with Google Play,

  • I bought one and it crapped itself after a couple months :/ I'd avoid.

    • crapped itself after a couple months

This tablet was released April 2026. Maybe bother to post what you actually bought.

      • A free .edu email says they won't revoke their vote for being wrong.

  • @fivemangotrees
This is a new release not sure what you bought.
IU bought the redmi pad 8 in the last sale for $480 has been
as good as the high end Samsungs at over $1k

  • This arrived so quick. It's the laggiest device I've ever used out of the box.

I knew that's to be expected on the specs and 4gb ram, but holy hell, it's slow…

Totally fine for my very basic use case, but just know what you're getting.

  • I just finished setting it up for the old man, and had a play around. Here are some thoughts:

Pros: really nice form factor, feels quite premium and is light in the hands.

Nice screen, not OLED but more than good enough.

Very easy setup process, just scan a QR code with the old tablet and everything came across.

Once updated, the interface is fairly responsive. Before the update I was a bit concerned as it was pretty choppy.

Cons. Not many to be fair.
It doesn't feel as snappy as my very old mi pad 4 but that's probably the lineage OS on the old tablet.

It seems to be limited to wifi 5. Plenty for most use cases but if I wanted to get one for me I'd want wifi 6 to help with latency when game streaming.

  • I received mine too. I agree with comments above from AEKaBeer, with my own observations below:

    Auto Brightness does not work.

My tablet came with a physically working SIM card slot on the side, which pops out a dummy SIM card tray. Got excited for a moment :)

Xiaomi just updated to Android April security update.

Contrary to what people say about Xiaomi phones, this tablet with Hyper OS 16 came with only a moderate amount of shite, which I could uninstall quite easily.

Reasonably happy enough so far, but not ecstatic.

    • what's the best browsing experience like? any noticeable lag?

      • Once everything is set up and updated, it’s fairly smooth. It will occasionally have a small hitch when scrolling but it’s not a big deal at this price.

  • Is this company still collecting and sharing all user data in line with Chinese data laws?

Edit: serious question, why downvote? I did some googling and there were reports of this occurring a few years ago, so want to know if anyone has experienced better security.

    • Half the users here are obviously Chinese, don't say things that make china look bad here…

      • I remember when someone accused me of being anti-China. I'm like have you seen my post history? 🤣🤣🤣

      • Yeah I guess so. Hurt feelings. Just asking a legitimate question based on information I’ve read, and it seems no one can answer it.

  • If anyone wants to unlock the bootloader on Xiaomi devices it is an absolute pain and getting to the point of near impossible with potential software blowing the hardware fuse on the SOC to stop you.

  • I recently bought a A16 iPad and while it is nice to use I find the screen a bit disappointing - washed out and not very bright. Is the screen on the Xiaomi better than the iPad?

  • whys this lowk cheaper or same price as a portable monitor…?

    • If you're paying $199 for a portable monitor, you're paying wayyyyyy too much. Unless it's OLED of course.

  • Available again (-$1 price difference)
