Ryobi 1500W SDS+ Rotary Hammer Drill $129 (Was $179) Delivered / C&C / in-Store @ Bunnings

190

Here's one for those that don't want a cordless rotary hammer. Or if you need a bit more long term power than most cordless SDS+ rotary hammers can provide.

Just be aware that it is a quite basic drill and has no variable speed, so not great for smaller holes. It also has no reverse which may not be ideal if the bit jams, though the hammer function only should get it loose anyway.. And it is quite heavy at nearly 5kg. but it is cheap, and should be ok for odd jobs if used with these things in mind.

Recommendations for reasonably priced, good quality bit sets. FWIW both sets have German made bits.

2 cut set $35 5-12mm https://www.totaltools.com.au/198170-milwaukee-5-12mm-2-cut-…

4 cut set $43 5-10mm https://www.totaltools.com.au/210148-milwaukee-sds-plus-mx4-…

In my experience the 4 cut bits don't drill noticeably faster in the smaller sizes, but they are much better if you run the risk of hitting rebar. They generally will cut through it and these Milwaukee 4 cut are designed for that.

  • The reviews at Bunnings are not so good

  • I have the older 1050w version of this drill. It's excellent. Makes concrete and masonry jobs feel like drilling into pine.

  • better than the ozito 1500w hammer drill kit? that ones only $99 and comes with bits and chisels too

    • I considered the Ozito until I read the many complaints that the bit spins in the chipping mode. And also more than one where the thing actually burnt out.

      • Burnt out as in the carbon brushes wore out? Or the motor died?

I'm on my 3rd one of these (gave the other 2 used ones to mates after replacing the carbon brushes).

  • Those chisels from bunnings are sds and not the plus … won't fit

    • Cheers, didn't notice the lack of that in the wording. Checking the pics, the look like SDS+ to me, but removed from the listing to be sure. The drill comes a couple anyway.

    • there is no current manufactured sds bits. sds plus is just an improved compatible standard for sds. they haven't marked it as sds plus but they are sds plus

      • Cheers. Never used the older format, so wasn't sure about its compatibility with newer drills, so removed the link to avoid any possible confusion.

  • great deal - was ready to buy this but some of the reviews mention there is no reverse on this

what do you do if the bit gets stuck and you want to back out?

    • Yes, it appears to have no reverse. And no variable speed trigger either. It is a very basic tool.

    • The hammer action will shake it loose.

      • makes sense - cheers

        • Or it digs it deeper. I got caught out with a jack hammer once.
Had to use the 2nd bit to dig the 1st bit out.

  • not great for smaller holes
    thanks for the heads up

    • I guess I could have worded it better:)

Perhaps I should have written: with a more powerful drill using smaller diameter bits, they can sometimes blow out the material you're drilling. Ending up with cracked bricks or an oversized hole etc. Being able to drill at a slower rpm and using less pressure can definitely lessen this. This not being variable speed means using minimal pressure only. A finesse lost on a lot of power tool users:)

Or better yet, just use a less powerful and more suitable drill if you are mainly drilling smaller holes.

I could have written that, but almost nobody would have read it anyway, lol.

  • Is this Ryobi one better than Bosch Blue (Bosch GBH 2-26 800w SDS+) performance and reliability wise?

    • The Ryobi has more impact energy according to the specs, but the Bosch is almost certainly better made and should last longer.

Personally I would prefer the Bosch. A bit less power but it's just over half the weight

  • I rate it but it definitely gives you a workout after using it for a while
