        That’s your car manufacturers fault and not the glasses. The orientation is logical for the glasses and not the HUD. It’s the same with monitors being mounted in portrait as indicator boards outside at train stations instead of in an office and more likely wearing polarised glasses outside and not being able to view the board

          This is a problem as its not limited to just car or monitors.. There is clearly a conflict of interest with other applications meaning there should be a proper standard so end users don't encounter this as usability problem. If a monitor is meant to be used portrait or landscape it should work regardless of you're using polarised glasses or not.

            @kaleidoscope: I’m not a physicist but my understanding is that polarisation works by blocking light from a certain angle so it would be impossible to account for every orientation.

              @alcadive: Its not… i’m trying to point a practical problem i have encountered. The hud example prevents me from purchasing a polarised pair of glasses as its completely unusable and i cannot see anything on (hud). So as a consumer i should have an option to pick polarisation angle for the glasses if that makes sense (which is something i dont get to choose now with glasses)

                @kaleidoscope: Again I’m not an expert but I think the whole point of polarisation in glasses is to block glare from light bouncing off horizontal surfaces (e.g. the road while you’re driving) so it wouldn’t make sense or help to orient it the other way. It seems like the failure is on the HUD manufacturer’s side.

            @kaleidoscope: The standard should be for the makers and mounters of huds, monitors etc
            The glasses work as designed to reduce glare from horizontal surfaces
            If they were orientated to suit your HUD, they wouldn't work for everything else

              @Royale with cheese: It was revealed that they were sending video to Meta even when not in use, and even when not being worn, with no status light to show it was happening, so it wasn't just a case of being dumb and wearing them during something you didn't want other people to see.

                Users have to activate recording manually or through a voice command, but may not realise their videos and images are sometimes reviewed by humans - as described within Meta's extensive privacy policies and terms of service

                Meta's glasses have a light in the corner of the frames that is turned on when the built-in camera is recording images or videos.

                @alcadive: You can easily put it in its cover when at home. Do we not realise our phones are constantly listening to our conversations too? So in general, try to be as careful as possible. My point is not to let your guard down and think others will do the right thing. If you think like that, you are almost certain to get kicked in your nuts every time not just with tech companies but every tom dick and harry on the planet. Is meta doing something incredibly wrong? Yes. Are you expecting them to do the right thing and are surprised? Too bad for your naivety. Will you delete insta and Facebook from your phone or not doom scroll on them for hours and hours, majority of the people are unable to do so these days. There is a general moral decline happening in society as it always has over history. We are just seeing new tools to be exploited.

                  @Royale with cheese: I expect them to do exactly what they did, which is why I would never buy a pair. If you think it's excusable for them to record video and upload it to Meta when the glasses aren't even meant to be on, and aren't being worn, then you are just as big a part of the problem as Meta is. Putting up with this crap instead of holding them accountable and proscecuting the execs is why this can happen. If I gave someone a camera, but rigged it to record when it wasn't in use and upload the pictures to me, and I got caught, I'd be arrested and prosecuted.

            I don't agree companies should do this, but people are deluding themselves if they think it's not normal practice.

            If you have a phone and are logged into either flybuys or everyday rewards, Colesworth are tracking you throughout their stores down to a 3m radius. How much time you spend in each zone, married to what you end up buying, the path you travel etc.

            They use this data, sure. But the part you should be concerned about, is you have agreed, and they gladly oblige, to selling this data (not anonymously) to third parties.

            Don't be scared of smart glasses.

            edit: As a fun aside, the most valuable data Colesworth have is the most time you spend somewhere and don't buy something from.

      On this topic, there was a serious investigation made by a newspaper in France. Someone wearing the glasses was able to find the identity and information about 20% of the people they crossed path with online. It's not just about Meta keeping your videos. Put this in the wrong hands and imagine the potential for stalking, privacy breach, and more.

    Very good price. My gen 1s broke but were under warranty but they made me pay the price difference between gen 1's and gen 2s since they couldn't ive me a gen1.

    Apparently swapping out the lenses are a scary but easy straight forward process, so 374 is a great entry with latest hardware specs if you are happy with the available styles.

          Sunglass Hut tried to get me like this too. A pair of regular raybans broke after 18 months in a way that was not my fault, and replacement version was about $20 more. They tried to get me to pay the difference, I said absolutely not, and they gave me my replacement sunnies.

I see them as a tool for the good, not to spy, snoop, not be a pervert. I see the potential but I would definitely hope most users would use them for the right reasons. I know they do have privacy lights on all mine that make sure to let people know that I am recording that can't be bypassed easily. I hate how they are getting a bad wrap because they can really be useful."

        They were recording and sending video to meta even when the light wasn't on and when they weren't being used, so it's not just a matter of people being responsibe with them, Meta was doing what they seem to be incapable of giving up, invading privacy even when not given permission.

    Looks like a good deal and I really did want these… but I just wish it was from pretty much any of the other big tech companies. Don't get me wrong, I use Meta/FB/Insta/etc but I'm holding out for a Google or Apple solution.

        I really wanted them back at Xmas when the Gen2s first launched but every person I asked said it was creepy if I was wearing them. Given my objective was to take photos/videos of my kids (including in the park/etc), the feedback from other parents was one of distrust even though there's the white LED/etc.

        That, and I also just generally don't trust Meta in terms of privacy, or whether they are committed to provision of services/etc to keep the platform useful over time.

          Never had anyone mention mine, but I don't go around taking photos of kids in parks. The photos aren't great and require some guesswork and luck to get anything half decent. Use a decent camera to take photos of your kids

      I wear a basic watch for notification pings (phone calls, emails etc). I'd ditch it in a heartbeat if I had a HUD with glasses.

      You can apparently drill the light out but go too deep and you ruin the glasses. There's a couple of youtube vids about it.

      The glasses won't record if the light is blocked but can buy sliding covers off amazon the press into the recess around the light. They do stick out a couple of millimeters from the frames to allow enough light in and allow you to start recording. During the day the glasses will start recording with the cover in place but if it's even a bit dark you have to open the cover, start recording, and then you can close the cover again.
