Makita 18Vx2 Brushless Lawn Mower 460mm Kit DLM464PT2 $599 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Bunnings Warehouse & Sydney Tools

280

I've been tempted before when it's been on sale for about $750 with bonus redemptions (e.g. blower etc.) but at this price I finally pulled the trigger. Online it looks like a price drop rather than a sale, but in store it was still $850 rrp with a $599 sale sticker. Probably means it's a run-out and about to be replaced with a newer model or something.

Kit includes:

  • DLM464Z 36V (18Vx2) Brushless Lawn Mower
  • 2 x 5Ah batteries
  • Dual port fast charger
  • Mulching plug

BTW the charger and batteries go for $329 on their own (see here) so if you're like me and still slumming it with a single port changer then this makes it a bit more worthwhile.

Edit: same price at Sydney Tools

  • how would this compare to the ozito 36v one?

    • not comparable

      • Maybe you should state HOW it’s not comparable

        • may be should mention which model and price rather than general statement with no model to compare, rather than saying it is too expensive in-directly, genius.

          • @huntabargain: forgive me. new to many of these things.

            here is the model I guess Ozito PXC 36V 2 x 18V 335mm Lawn Mower 3.0Ah Kit PXLMK-3182 - Bunnings Australia https://share.google/Re3qb7w7C3yaqMg1a

            • @cciputra: I will give you some difference not all points.
              30lr vs 60lr catcher
              Brushless vs Brushed motor
              2x5amp vs 2x3amp batteries
              Steel vs plastic body
Ozito is DIY only - imply soft use and warranty void otherwise
              Nominal 800m² area vs 300m²
              Superior quality overall
              460mm vs 335mm cutting width
Ozito will struggle with moderate thick grass much worst performance than Makita.
PS: if your budget is max $329 and wants to get cordless mower then buy it at your own risk otherwise get a petrol mower.

            • @cciputra: I have the Makita and previsouly the ozito, the ozito is fine if you have a tiny lawn that never gets overgrown, but anything more than that, it just doesn't cut it. Ozito is also plastic vs the steel deck of the makita. In terms of quality, no comparison

              • @simongibbo: This tells you all you need to know.
You had the cheap one and had to go back and buy the better product.

Thanks for sharing your experience, so hopefully cciputa can learn

              • @simongibbo: Is there ever a time you wish you still had petrol?

            • @cciputra: That Ozito is closer to the plastic-fantastic Makita DLM382CT2. Even this Makita still has better specs, being a 380mm compared to the Ozito 335mm.

              https://sydneytools.com.au/product/makita-dlm382ct2-36v-18v-…

    • I have this one.

      • 45L catcher is a bit small and it doesn't have as much oomph to throw the grass all the way to the back
      • Plastic body means it's easy to maneuverer and less fatiguing. I have no concerns about the longevity (no rust possible!)
      • 4.0ah is a bit limiting, if you cut too low on thick grass it really chews batteries
      • Secondly to that, it means I sometimes have to mow twice at two different heights to get the most of out of the battery life
      • The safety handle is easy to use, I have heard anecdotal complaints that the Makita one has quite a heavy spring

At the time I decided against the Makita as the cheapest steel deck 36v was NOT brushless, though it seems they've rectified that. I also didn't like that they didn't offer a plastic deck 36v, it was almost like "if you want power, you have to go steel deck", where Ozito actually gave you a choice.

  • They are price matching Sydney Tools

    • Not sure if that means you could get one to price beat the other?

      • How to price beat if they are identical price?

        • Good point! Maybe Total Tools would price beat then?

          • @Cornydog: Don't think TT price beat, at best price match, so why bother? Bunnings easier to deal with for return/refund.

  • i have one of these and have been quite happy with it

    • Me too. I got mine for <$50 more than this deal (Bunnings pricematch), but at a time when you also got 2x5ah batteries by redemption from Makita.

      • That sounds like a great price plus the redemption. Sadly there are no redemption offers from Makita right now otherwise I would have got this one.

    • I just got mine yesterday and I too am quite happy with it after using it for the first time. Complaints about the trigger handle are overdone in my opinion, not that hard to hold it in while using it.
Paid $749 for it but got $150 instore credit at TKD for it and the free blower that will be sold as I already have a 36V blower.

      • Also, if people find the safety bar arduous they could 3d print one of these (bypass security failsafes at your own risk)

  • fyi Sydney Tools has the battery and charger combo at $329, you will get,

    • BL1850B - 18V 5.0Ah Battery x 2
    • DC18RD - 18V Dual Port Rapid Charger

Or this deal is even better at $349, you will get,

    • DMR055 - 18V Radio Lantern
    • DUB185 - 18V Blower
    • BL1840B - 18V 4.0Ah Battery x 2
    • DC18RD - 18V Dual Port Rapid Charger
  • can't you ozbargain the battery? Just use ya ozito.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/235964754241?chn=ps&_ul=AU&norov…

    • buyer beware: these adapters almost always explicitly state that the adapter is only designed for battery-to-tool connection (not to be used to connect the battery to a charger).

      • Best to use a ozito charger with ozito batteries. I was just saying that you could use existing batteries…. $350 for batteries seems steep that's all. These batteries all have 18650 or similar cells with a BMS.

        • Agreed. Just thought it was worth a mention for those that aren't as clued in about the recommended use of these adapters ;)

  • Please reassure me this ego deal I just bought is better!!! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/958379

    • if you needed all the tools in the ego deal, yes I assure you it is great deal.

      • I "need" most except the hedger… However I can see value in phasing out my Ryobi tools for Makita.

I havent picked it up yet cause the blower is still on back order. I wonder if they would let me change it out prior anyway.

Only real concern is the 42cm deck and the plastic deck compared to the Makitas steel deck and 46cm

    • Keen to know the comparison too.

    • Depends on what you are after. Just for gardening, the deal you highlighted is a great price.
If you want to use your batteries and expand into the tool ecosystem, by simplifying how many chargers and batteries you have, better off with Makita .

      • I "need" most except the hedger… However I can see value in phasing out my Ryobi tools for Makita.

Only real concern is the 42cm deck and the plastic deck compared to the Makitas steel deck and 46cm

        • How big is the block you need to mow and how dense/what type is the grass?

Ego are considered to be great for electric gardening. Apparently can be a bit difficult to deal with if you do have issues. The plastic deck may be an issue depending on your terrain

I am currently using a (now discontinued) Victa 82v 21 inch with a steel deck, and it has been faultless, apart from having to replace the battery at quite a high cost.

    • I've nothing to say about this, except that I want to say "following".

      Following.

  • Must be ATL, as I bought this 5 years ago for $699 even before Covid devalued our money

  • Any practical comparison between these two

    Ozito PXC 36V (2 x 18V) 460mm Brushless Steel Deck Lawn Mower 4.0Ah Kit PXBMK-4047 vs Makita 18Vx2 Brushless Lawn Mower 460mm Kit DLM464PT2

  • It is a heavy mower
    Skin weight: 26.4kg
    Weight (with battery): 27.6kg

And bunngings weedsite, three people say they have trouble with the handle hand cramps.

    • One advantage of the electric revolution is gone if it's that heavy. Masport 470 2in1 Petrol Lawnmower is also 26kg.

      • its a double edged sword, as my old Ryobi 36v lithium mower is light as 13kg, great for carrying if you need to get it up a level or stairs, but the lightness does contribute slightly to a worse evenness cut and bounces over things a little bit (heavily lawn type/height/flatness dependent)

        • I see. I am not looking for light but some people seem to be. All I want is a perfect cut regardless of grass thickness. :)

    • I have the Makita mower and the review comments about the handle is a non-issue for me.

Yes, it's a steel deck which gives a better lower cut which my customer prefers.

  • The deal was much better when i bought the same lawn mower for $749 and I got a 36v blower as an instore offer and 2 extra 5Ah batteries through online redemption. So $150 extra compared to this deal but 2 batteries and the blower were definitely worth it.

    • there were $150 Bunnings gift card for $750 spent too.

      • I bought 1 week before that promo -.-

    • Yeah, there have been multiple deals on it before, but whether they were better or not depends on whether you wanted to pay more for those extras. In my case, I have a bunch of Makita gear so I already have 4 batteries. The extra 2 batteries plus the double charger in this kit are a nice addition and gets me to where I want to be overall. However, I don't really need a blower and 2 more batteries for another $150. You could probably sell those for >$150 but that's uncertain and extra effort compared to just grabbing the mower kit for $599.

As someone above said, the $750 TKD deal with the blower and $150 credit is pretty good too. Depends on your specific situation in terms of what you want/need really.

  • Not specific to this deal BUT electric mower makers really need to clearly and consistantly communicate the rated kW power of the motors in their units. The majority do not have it at all, some hide it away in their manuals specs and a rare few will state it up front.

There is nothing on either the Bunnings or Makita site in any of their documentation on the motor's rated power. I've checked the product manual etc. AI says it's 1450w, so take that with a grain of salt.

You'd never buy a petrol mower if you have no idea of the engine power/capacity yet electric ones keep basic info such as this deliberately hidden from the consumer who's buying it.

    • I really want to change over but the electric mowers seem to be piss weak. What I don't want is for the mower to slow down or bind becasue the grass is thick or wet etc.

      • Many new users end up with the same issue - having engine power ratings CLEARLY stated would allow such problems to be forseen or better still avoided all together.

That said a lot of cordless mower buyers really need to do better research as a simple look at the manual (generally available online) has the manufacturer's stating that grass that is long or overly thick needs to be done in multiple passes of decreasing cut height - which isn't something most users are prepared to do (understandably).

I'd go for a mower that clearly tells you the power of their motor and err on the side of having a tad too much than a tad not enough.

      • Most are piss weak. I have this one and it's weak as. Stalls during spring when my grass is thickest all the time. When the battery gets to 50% forget it, it basically can't cut anymore.

        • I reckon these must allow you to spend more time with your family because you are not cutting the lawn. Just get a contractor to do it. :)

Similar to electric cars, you get to spend more time with your family or yourself, when lining up for charging during the long weekend.

Electric stuff like this seems to be a downgrade to me.

          • @Naigrabzo: I watch TV from comfort of my lounge while my EV car charge free from solar panels/home battery ! It has more power than any sport car.

      • I will go MAKITA when the day comes as all my tools are so batteries are interchangeable.

But the old Honda buffalo will just not die!

        • Honda will unlikely to die unless it's 25 years or more…. :) MAybe Makita has 108V gadgets. I don't think 56V is enough for typical lawns.

          • @Naigrabzo: Don't need over 56V, 36V is even plenty for typical lawns if you buy a Milwaukee (2 x 18V batteries). It's far superior to the Makita but also much more expensive.

  • Paid $280 for the STANLEY FATMAX V20 on amazon a bit ago. Wouldn't pay more

  • I bought the some lawnmower 6 months ago. Cuts well, but have had a few issues. I returned the first one as it constantly stalled for no reason. I raised the issue with Makita and they simply referred me to the manual (page 9 by memory). I was not impressed. I exchanged it at Bunnings, second one was much better. However it does occasionally randomly stall. Batteries are fully charged and my lawn is about 60m2.

    • Makita has really poor after sales service in my opinion.

      • I complained about mine screeching when I released the handle (it was the motor brake). Bunnings raised it as a warranty job with Makita. Makita repaired the mower and returned it to me. It was not exchange warranty, but with the amount of metal and resources that go into manufacturing a mower, I was not expecting an exchange. It is not a throwaway commodity mower like a Ryobi or Ozito anyway.

    • For 60m2 you can get away with a smaller mower.

    • 60m2 is a tiny lawn, it would have to be piss poor power to struggle with that.

  • Any deals on a makita line trimmer? in desperate need of one

    • skin or kit?

      • Skin

        • check this model from Bunnings at $269, other stores selling for $393
          https://www.bunnings.com.au/makita-18v-brushless-multi-funct…

          • @huntabargain: I saw that too last week 393 now 269 not bad might grab this today replace the leaky petrol one

            • @George Washington: Grabbed it worth a bargin deal for the makita multi head trimmer

              • @George Washington: Did you get free gift card?

                • @huntabargain: Nope at 260 it was a steal already. Even the cash converters second hands ones are selling for 250 and same with FB marketplace.

It paid itself off after the first cut. No smoke no noise, no fumes, lighter, no leaks no mixing fuel.

Tempted to pull the trigger of the battery mower too to replace a FB marketplace Victa Concept 4 Tecumseh motor mower made in 1996!!! That is still running!!!

                  • @George Washington: Your right tho this is a run out model. As there was only 1 left in store, I asked the tool lady if they were going to get more stock. She checked her computer and said there was no note of when the next shipment was arriving.

                  • @George Washington: Yes I have petrol mower over 25yes old still running so planning to get cordless one if / when die. This Makita offer expired tho

  • Bunnings has dropped the price of the mower to $590.

    • Bugger missed it. Back to $599.00 now.

    • 4amp vs 5amp, plastic deck vs steel deck, smaller catcher, Makita better built, you save $100
