You can still use a Mac even after Apple stops supporting it. Some people are rocking 10-15 year old MacBooks
- 2

Literally me with my mid-2014 MBP, that's probably worth about $50 now, if I'm lucky. 😂
- 1

Are you still able to install new software? Some of them only supports the newer system and new chip I think
- 1

@MichaelAU: Majority of the software updates are pretty much over with. I say "pretty much", because I think there was a random security update either early this year or late last year? I'm still on Big Sur.
Apparently there is a way to bypass it and flash some of the newer OS onto your system, unofficially, but haven't looked into it too much. Other than that I just use it for music production and leisure these days.
- 0

@Aretwo: Same 2014 MBP here, on OCLP Sonoma though. Kids love it and still runs roblox like new.
OCLP is pretty straightforward. You just need a 16GB USB drive to create the installer. You can try Sonoma first and if you find it a bit slow for your usecase then Ventura.
- 1

@timedzone: Nice! I might give that a try one day.
My biggest concern is mainly my music programs. They can be an absolute pain to reinstall if anything goes tits up!
- 0

@Aretwo: Then definitely dont touch it if it still works lol. Too many things can go wrong during an upgrade.
- 0

@MichaelAU: Right but whenever Apple stops supporting the M1 (maybe in 1-2 years), it isn’t like everyone else is going to stop supporting the M1 straight away.
Other companies will keep releasing software for the M1 for a while even after Apple drops support
- 1

If you're selling a functional 2014 MacBook Pro 15" for only $50, I'll take it lol
- 2

I have a MBP mid-2014, OCLP with some latest stuff. wifi module just died - found corrosion on it. ordered replacement for $20 will be like new.
- 0

@srr: How good are the mid 2014 models hey, I’ve got one with OLCP on it and still runs smooth as. My only issue is battery needs replacing but I use it mainly plugged in nowadays.
- 1

wym, don't these things retain their value like crazy?
- 0

I've got a 10 year old intel 15" still going very strong.
It had a few issues in its earlier years but Apple fixed them all under warranty and its been fine since.- 1

Did you need/want the 16" specifically? If not, the $719 MacBook Neo would've been good enough for your use case? What kind of entertainment exactly?
- 3

I prefer 16inch. I tried the 14inch m3pro, the screen was too small for me when using web browser. I don't travel a lot, I will use my 14ich windows laptop for work. Entertainment like listening to the music, watching movies
- 0

Gotcha! For watching movies I would've picked an iPad Pro (with attachable keyboard case for browsing) since it's OLED but the largest model is only 13" so may not suit you. Samsung's S Tab Ultra is the largest high end tablet I know of at 14.6" so if that doesn't work for you, stick with the 16" MBP you have now until they release a OLED 16" MBP which should be this or next year.
- 1

@Nillionaire: Thank you. 13inch OLED iPad Pro is too expensive for me if I use just use it for watching movies. I know Apple will release an OLED macbook pro very soon but it will be very expensive and it is overkill for my usage. I will probably wait for a few years and then purchase another older model at that time.
- 2

@Nillionaire: I find having to hold or prop up the tablet makes watching movies very cumbersome.
my tablet lives in my bedside 99% of the time
Laptop is much easier IMO , since it has a sturdy "built-in stand"- 1

Brandnew? You mind to share?

I’d just keep the M1 for now. It’s fine for web and multimedia. No one knows how long Apple will support this silicon for, but given they just shipped an 8GB Neo, decent chance the M1’s could be supported for some time still given MacOS will need to continue to support chips that are on the low end RAM wise.
If your use case doesn’t change, you could consider the 15” MBA next time. Just a tad smaller than the 16” and easier to get at a lower price. Just a thought.

If you're only web browsing and watching movies, why do you need a MBP? Surely an Air is enough? A new model MBP is overkill for your use case.
- 1

I like MBP's screen, If the Air has promotion screen, I may switch to Air.

I think we were looking at the same listing 😹
- 0

Oh, eBay sent me a 10% voucher, that's why I purchased it
- 0

I received it this morning. Can confirm that it is brand new.
- 0

Oh very nice! Enjoy it!~
- 0

What? No. You don’t need an m4 pro to browse the web and stream videos. Stick with the m1.
- 1

Great find for your first post!
- 4

thanks, glad I could give back after so many years

For comparison the AOC store will sell you an M5 Pro with 1TB for $3,820 (their lowest spec available)
So this deal does seem good if 512GB is enough
- 2

I think AOC is dead now, no?
Or soon to be? And/or edu store. I thought an M5 Pro just before these changes came into place so curious to hear where it’s at if anyone has recent experience (think they’re fresh changes).- 0

Not dead yet
- 0

But edu already requires verification. But AOC does not yet? Until closure on 28 May?
- 0

Will probably still go lower, the m3 models went to a little bit over 2k during their final clearances
- 8

Yup, will likely drop further if you don't need immediately.
- 3

I saw a 14 inch M3 Pro selling from JB for $1351 about a month ago. Was a great deal, but probably hardly any stock, as they didn't have any when I asked.
- 0

512GB onboard soldered storage is no Pro.
- -1

It was released two years ago. 2026 models start at 1TB.
- 1

14" is avaible for $2,497.00 but stocks are less. I found one in QLD store and as it was an ex-demo model they discounted it by a further 5%. Battery health was normal (10 cycles) and apple customer care reset my warranty start date to the purcahse date. Eligible for apple care as well
- 1

Not if you want the pro chip
- 1

True
- 0

And also 16GB memory. I think it is worth paying $500 extra for the pro chip and the 8GB extra ram.
- 1

Actually this model seems quite reasonable in comparison if 16 inch is not necessary:
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/apple-macbook-pro-14-inch…
Same 14/20 core + 24/1TB for $2898.
- 0

It's a shame they're not selling 1TB for a similar price.
- 0

I would have bit but yeah…512GB in 2026 isn’t it for me. My 2017 MBP has 512GB. I need atlease 1TB
- 2

I think the money is better spent on a NAS unless you really need the full 1TB @ SSD speed.

Bought a Rose Gold 15 inch M4 MacBook Air 24gig RAM and 512gig HD from JB’s via ShopBack
Stacked with gift cards and came down to just over $1600
Hard to beat for the price

I just bought a brand-new 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro for $1,500 on eBay. I mainly use it for web browsing and entertainment. Would the M4 Pro make a huge difference for my use case? I know it costs about twice as much, but I’m not sure how long Apple will continue supporting the M1 series.
