This NAS has been popular previously and it's on sale again with 32GB of DDR5 4800MHz RAM included that certainly makes it better value considering the price of RAM these days. This is paired with the 8 core, 8 thread Intel i3-N305 CPU and Intel UHD graphics.

These are great for all the essentials including network storage with RAID redundancy, Plex/Jellyfin transcoding, Docker, video surveillance, syncing to Cloud storage etc. It comes preinstalled with their own TOS 6 (TOS 7 in development, beta available), you can easily install another OS, like Unraid, Arc Loader (Xpenology), TrueNAS, Promox, Windows and more.

Other features include 4 SATA bays, 2x M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 x1 SSD slots, 2x 2.5GbE LAN ports, USB-A & USB-C 3.2 Gen2 10Gbps ports and HDMI 2.0b (for command input on TOS).

  • Now we just need some decently priced storage

    • Good luck with that

    • Goes in cycles, like anything. Right now it's a seller's market, so buy only what you need.

Once prices drop, buy as much as you can.

    • Where are the East Digital deals???????

      • No sales in over a year it seems, despite the stronger aussie dollar the prices haven't budged.

        • Must be less refurbished products coming out of Seagate or something too… Very rare for it to be this long between any deals from them.

  • In amazon someone commented that if you install another os, you have to manually choose it to boot, and there is no way to boot another os automatically. It is a great pain i think

    • Nah easy fix. Just need to go into the BIOS and change the boot priority to have the internal USB drive (or wherever else it was installed) as boot priority 1.

      • thanks a lot, i just ordered one.
actually i bought a ugreen dh4300 from amazon which yet to arrive, and since you know this bios is not locked (i guess that person commented in amazon made a mistake something?), i just ordered this. they will both arrive tomorrow, and i will return the ugreen arm nas to amazon.
i don't really like linux file system which may cause issues when the nas dies.

    • What other OS can you install? Proxmox and run OpenMediaVault?

      • Yes, and truenas

  • Can anyone share their expertise views for this and Synology DS925+ ?

    • Synology have basically become the Galactic Empire and can f$@k right off.

      • Goodonya, made me laugh ( still is) on the Galactic empire statement…., i am looking for a replacement for my acient QNAP 469L with possibly a backplate issue (* if SMART is right on one QNPA OS) for one of the drives. Now i have used QNAPs in the past ( at present my 469L was backup due to the space and the 251 is my primary but not ienough space in a 2bay drive. Is this thing straight forward to configure , i was looking at a 06 bay QMD qnap but they are > 1500$ (more exp than intel versions). any recommendations on this

    • Not an expert but own both.

You cannot beat Synology software. Second to none imho.

As others might have said, they started milking their customers for money. So naturally a lot of existing fans are not very happy. If you are new to the ecosystem, I suggest you would be ok.

I personally bought TerraMaster because I wanted to try something different. It does the job well. Just a bit more fiddling.

      • As someone who was new to this stuff a few years ago, I definitely recommend going with Synology. It made everything a lot easier.

        • Yah I got terramaster but had a fault with the sata drive connection so i had to return it and went with synology. has been fairly straight forward but I probably utilise it like my own potential and use about 10% of it and don't bother with what i can possibly do. It's basically a RAID that does plex at this point lol.

      • Can this run Xpenology to get the synology software experience though?

        • I did it with an older model. These things are basically computers so I'd expect it to work.

    • Synology software is great, but their hardware has locked bootloaders, so no easy way to try another OS if Synology goes downhill or bankrupt.

    • yuo can run Synology DSM on this (auxxxilium) , just the same as you can the DS925+

    • Synology just works.

Terramaster - any savings will be spent fixing, setting up or tinkering. My questions to you - How much is your time worth? And how much is your data worth?

  • Hmmmm this or wait for another Aoostar WTR MAX for $689 on Amazon

    • I missed the deal. That was literally the only night all year that I went to sleep early, after tracking price on the WTR Max since it was released.

I have been checking daily ever since, and I don't think it's ever going to happen again - it was almost certainly a price error that was still fulfilled.

      • Lollll checking daily too. I share the same thoughts we won't see that price again.. or maybe another year

        • It's not quite as good, but the Minisforum N5 Air has launched at $799 on Amazon. Hopefully we get some decent sales on it soon.

  • If anyone wants to save money you can make your own with a used eBay sff hp elitdesk 800 as they can fit 2 or 3 hdd and an ssd in the case. Then just add some more ram and a 2.5gb nic if you want.

    • Just to piggy back off this comment (since we are on the same subject) - recently built sagittarius case build (new mobo, 5600g cpu, 32Gb ddr4 RAM etc) - was just $150 more. It truned out to be more powerful and slightly more future proof imho. So I would agree - recommend building your own - fun experience too!

      • 5600g for discrete gpu but does it have any specific benefits over intel decoders?

        • No it doesn't, you'd be better off with a similar spec Intel CPU with Intel QuickSync for video transcoding.

    • Has anyone recased the hp elitedesk or another refurbished computer into a designated NAS case?

      • That setup would use more power

      • I did that at the start, it was perfectly adequate, truenas ran well, the only issue you'd run into is the power supplies, I wanted to use my GTX 1060 but the power supply wasn't up to it. You could chuck in something like an arc a310 which runs off PCI-e power, good enough for Plex transcoding and frigate detect work as well.
I just ended up moving to unraid with a dedicated server build.

All in all, it's a great stepping stone, and they're cheap enough that you can sell them off pretty quick on marketplace.

      • just buy someone's old gaming pc with similar specs. Like others have posted you will run into proprietary power supplies and motherboard mounting issues if you get a normal case.

    • I am doing the same with a Dell 7060, 16GB RAM, 1 Terabyte HDD with Linux Mint and 4 USB HDDs. Running through a 10Gbs NIC connected to switch with 5+1 2.5Gb+10Gb connection for Jellyfin.

      • sounds messsssyy

        • Yeah, I didn't want to shuck any of the external HDD as I used them on multiple systems. Two portable HDD sits on the 7060 and the other two sits behind the tv so it's not that bad. It can't be seen from the front but a bit messy behind the TV.

      • Smarter than me. I'm using an M4 Mac Mini (base with M4, 16gb, 256gb, 1gbe) with a few old external drives plugged in because I can't justify the price of HDDs at the moment.

Works great with my ARR setup and Plex, but I should have gone for a used Dell or something for half the price.

        • I bought this Terramaster but haven't opened the box yet, still waiting for new drives. I saw some youtube videos which prefer Mac mini over NAS. Could you please share your experiences of setting up Mac Mini vs this Terramastter NAS? Thanks

          • @ShinyDiamond: Firstly, good luck even getting a Mac mini right now.

I have no experience with this terramaster or any other NAS so I can’t give you a direct comparison.

One of the major reasons I chose the Mac was for transcoding in Plex. Many NAS devices (presumably including this one) offer hardware transcoding however the ability to use it is locked behind a $390 paywall in Plex. The Mac is powerful enough to do software decoding, which doesn’t require the Plex Pass. So in other words Id have to spend a further $390 with the NAS, eroding any savings over the mac.

  • I have this NAS. Plenty of performance for plex

  • Pulled the trigger. Now the next riddle is the Drives. Prices are going crazy for the new drives.

    • They are. Got mine year and bit back from.eastdigital. prices gone up so much since. Thinking of getting another Nas but my spare QNAP 413 won't die. Got a wtr pro a year back and 64tb total in drives in it as my main workhorse. Most crucial backup goes to qnap and 1 to a 4tb HDD I rotate to off site. Don't really trust cloud too much.

    • Have had a nas for a few months with no HDDs still :(

      • Look like I will be in the same boat. NAS will get delivered tomorrow but won't be able to buy drives until any decent offer comes on.

        • Unfortunately think you have to bite the bullet and get 2 drives now to get it up and running. Cannot see prices go down much this year. I got 2 18tb 1 16tb and 1 14tb in my nas. Also 1 1tb nvme as cache drive. Speeds thing up lots. 1 18tb is the parity drive so of it hits the fan it's still up and running. Got unraid on it. Wtr pro Intel version.

  • Can you use this as a google photos replacement? If so what software / app do you use and why?

    • Immich in docker would be your best bet

    • immich, because it's the best one you can use.

  • Is a NAS just a low end pc? What justify the $847 price? Another victim of expensive RAM?

    • Maybe you need to google what NAS actually is

      • … As others have suggested you can easily build a more powerful NAS with much cheaper cost.

I am just saying this thing has all the low end components and cost so much.

        Google :
A NAS (Network Attached Storage) is essentially a specialized, low-power computer designed to serve files, often using efficient, lower-performance processors compared to a desktop PC.

  • I am supporting a non-profit organisatino that has about 120TB data (100TB is video in 4k) and they have a NAS in india (synology) and an exact replica of it needs to be create din Australia. Would wanna factor in for up to 200 TB to begin with and an option to expand if need be in the future.

Trying to find some network experts to guide - but I value OzB community a lot <3 any suggestion/advise is much appreciated.

    • Basic understanding (not expert level) is enough to use Syncthing - free open-source vendor-agnostic software.
      But it is two-way sync.
If you need one time one-way sync I would probably use rsync.
In any scenario if you are on NBN, 100Mbps upload, we are talking about 2-3 weeks of 100% upload to get initial 200Tb through.

  • aoostar wtr max is just a bit more expensive than this and 1000% better

    • It doesn't come with RAM. You have to buy it separately.

    • Looking at that Aoostar in Amazon, $568 + $299 32gb RAM = $867. Would this be a better deal than this Terramaster?

      • I got the Intel version instead of the AMD. Reason is Intel transcode movies better for my Plex than this amd. Depends what you use it for. AMD is better processor in general but Intel better for example Plex transcoding. (What I looked up and by comments). It's working great and low power usage. Intel only have a single ram slot. Got 32gb in mine as believe it was max. Can transform the wifi output to nvme apparently buying a converter. I just got one anyways as cache drive. Not hot swappable drives.

  • back in my day 10 years ago, a gaming PC was $900.

    • Yeah my techfast gaming PC was $888.
I can plug extra HDDs in and turn it into a NAS.

  • If you want this for the hardware and plan to put a different OS on it, sure. But if you are getting this to stick with their OS and rely on their support: don't.
I had a Terramaster NAS, and it was a nightmare. Event the original setup was a mess, because it couldn't download its OS and got stuck. Once set up:

    • drives would never sleep and spin 24/7, even though nothing was accessing them. This would have cost me a fortune in electricity.
    • their 24/7 support sticker is nonsense. It takes days to get a remote appointment, and you have to give them root access. Time was inconvenient and they were an hour late. They didn't fix the issue, but claimed they did anyway.
    • backup to OneDrive, which is what I had bought it for and which was advertised as a feature, didn't work. Support initially assured me that it did, before admitting it could only work if I installed a beta version of their OS.

Returned it to Amazon and got an Asustor instead. Works like a charm.

  • Just a note - many of these Amazon Nas units are using unreliable sata controllers - most opt for somewhat unreliable (under linux) asmedia sata bridge controllers.

These can cause all sorts of issues with ZFS, Btrfs, Unraid arrays, etc. They seem to work well with traditional mdadm raid arrays however, but be aware of this limitation or you may have data loss.

Synology may be backwards in terms of hardware spec, but are somewhat more reliable. Qnap on the other hand have some very interesting offers hardware wise.

  • This or something thing like D4/D6-340 and much more powerful refurbished mini pc from eBay eg Elitedesk/ Optiplex? IMO most people would want to install custom NAS OS anyway like Unraid.

    • I got down voted for saying this is a low end pc but my opinion is that you should definitely go with a powerful mini pc. You can use it for anything you want not just NAS and slightly more future proof.

Maybe that's an unpopular opinion on ozbargain i guess

      • Is a NAS just a low end pc?

…and I was one of them because your comment makes it seem you don't know what a NAS is and were instead were comparing the config to an equivalent $850 PC which would obviously be significantly more powerful. However that PC would not have sufficient storage bays for HDDs and that's the point of NAS - to maximise storage and processing usually is not a priority and in fact deliberately nerfed at times to lower power consumption.

        • Yep all good I see what you mean.
For me it still doesn't justify the $850 price, they can do better with the spec for that price.

Maybe for the convenience but if people are going to install a different OS and not use it out of the box then it's kinda meaningless, as you are probably technical enough to DIY one.

          • @cowboydev: personally I don't see the point of NAS especially if you already have a computer, you could always just get a DAS and keep adding drives and then usually add the cheapest decent mini pc you can find if you really need it. I am using D6-320 (got it on a promo on Terramaster store with a free keyboard for $499) connected to my MBP. My whole stack works within a docker compose anyway so didn't see the point of having a NAS as the OS etc. would just be bloatware for me which is the point you're making I guess of not being worth it.

  • I know there's a big price difference between this and the Ugreen DXP 4800 Pro (and can only order from Amazon US) but I wanted to know if this is better for someone who's planning to buy their first NAS.

    • Depends what you are planning using it for.
If just for storage and backup and don't need fancy 2.5-10gb ports get a cheap one to start and make sure to get decent size drives to fill. Or just marketplace second hand nas and perhaps some random drives you got laying around to.play around with and perhaps know what you want to do with it..

If you want one that runs example unraid with Plex/jellyfin and others with HA, VM. Then you need a much better one to get good performance.

Similar to when getting a gaming computer.get what you pay for.

    • It is now available on Amazon AU. Showing me a price of $1,099.99 on Business account.
