  • Games any good?

    • It's just the N64 version with a slap of paint. It's still the same basic on rails shooter with no real gameplay changes.

The game will be ~2 hours long.. for $88.

      • For single player I think they added a bunch of extra challenge modes

For multiplayer it looks like they added a bunch of new modes too

It does actually seem a bit different

But the slap of paint is also very nice

        • I know the Nintendo tax exists, but this one surely is a joke cash grab and only the most hardcore Nintendo fans could justify it.

          • @studentl0an: I dunno, it has a good chance of being my favourite Switch 2 game so far

            • @zagadka: Well that's one way to justify spending $88 for a few hours on a remake of a 20+ year old game.

              • @studentl0an: Haha I might play this for a few hundred hours, not a few hours…

      • Is it true that 64 is just a reskin of the first game also?

I've only played the SNES game way back in the day, so I was quite surprised to hear the legacy of these just being repeats of themselves throughout the ages.

        • Nah, 64 is a reimaging/retelling of the same story. Same as Star Fox Zero basically was too.

This is the only one that’s a direct copy of the gameplay but.

      • Doing all the routes and different difficulty modes will easily take around 10 hours or so, plus it's completely remade from the ground up and new cinematics, battle mode, challenges etc.

Bit disingenuous to call it a 2 hour game with a slap of paint.

        • I think most people don't consider taking a separate path on the same level, or playing on different difficulties as increasing the hours it takes to get through the game.

I think it's disingenuous to consider it a 10 hour game if you play the same 2 hours, slightly differently over and over.

          • @studentl0an: I mean you are describing the whole genre of roguelike games. Should we call those 30min games because they just repeat slightly differently over and over. (My vote is yes but nobody seems to do that, e.g. people call Hades a 100 hour game instead of a 30min game).

            • @zagadka: Not really, rogue/like/lite are a separate genre and people understand they need to keep replaying to actually finish the game. Starfox is not a roguelike no matter which way you look at it.

There's entire studios such as Quantic Dream or Supermassive Games with titles like Heavy Rain, Detroit Become Human, Until Dawn ect where there's multiple paths you can take and different outcomes for every character but no one refers to those games as taking hundreds of hours to finish. They poll around 10-20 hours.

Using howlongtobeat.com is a good indication of how long it takes to finish a game, as polled by the people playing them. 2 hours is what the consensus is with Starfox 64.

          • @studentl0an: Taking a different path on a level gives you access to a brand new level/path of levels though, not just saying the same level is slightly different.

And different difficulties on Star Fox games (at least the earlier ones) does feel very different rather than just slightly harder.

          • @studentl0an: The branching paths is entirely new levels.

Having a look, a minimum run looks to consist of playing 6 levels of a total of 15 available levels.

I assume most people playing track based racing games don’t just race each track once and shelve the game.

            • @Smigit: Ok so 2 hours becomes 4 but it's really 3 because you need to replay the missions which don't branch to get to the branched ones.

3 hours. 30 year old game mechanics. 88 dollars.

              • @studentl0an: Sure, it’s a 3 hour game just like Mario Kart is if you only race the tracks once each.

                • @Smigit: Mario Kart is a multiplayer game first in near everyone's opinion and basically no one buys Mario Kart for singleplayer only. Starfox is the opposite - it isn't exactly known for it's robust and thriving multiplayer community in the way that Mario Kart or Smash are, and people's best arguments for it here (you included) is that you can do the same short single player campaign with different paths.

I think you guys all know this deep down and are just trying to justify to yourselves into paying the Nintendo tax for a game that really didn't need to be re-re-re-re released, and it would have been much cooler (and worth the price) if they did something like Rogue Squadron 1-3 as a single remastered trilogy if talking about Nintendo IP with singleplayer space combat focus.

        • it's a 2hr game.

    • omg they brought back starfox? man I haven't played this game since the N64 days?

      • Sadly it's the same game with updated graphics

    • Im hesitant after experiencing the downgrade that was advance wars.

    • Shouldn't this game be "Lylat wars: Switch edition"

      • Only for certain regions.

    • 'Starfox 65' would have been sweet lol

  • How many times is this game now remilked?

    • Not as many as the last of us.

  • Best off waiting for target to list it and use the voucher.

    • this exactly

  • Do a barrel roll

  • This game was mind blowing back in the SNES days.

  • ok this looks like the n64 version remastered.

    • That's exactly what it is…

Like Star Fox zero, and Star Fox DS…

The N64 version was a remaster of the SNES version lol

  • Need to be $60 RRP and $50 on sale (physical)
    Drop another $20 for digital.

    • In this US it is priced at $60 US and most people are paying about another 10% ish in sales tax. So that's about $90 AUD here.

The digital version is priced at $50 US + tax so that's about $75 AUD here. But somehow it is $85 on the eShop in Australia instead of $75.

      • I was voicing an opinion on what it's worth. I collect games and have been wanting this for a decade. So if I'm not going to buy it, that's a huge red flag

  • Nintendo pricing is the final boss

  • Feel like this one will be in the "bargain" (cough) $59 bin at Target or Big W within a couple of months like Hyrule Warriors or Kirby Air Riders. Not based on quality, just length and price point.

  • Call it Lylatwars again or no deal

  • I could. not. believe. it when they announced it was a remake…..again. Wild.

    • most games are Just remake nowadays. it's almost like we don't have any game creators anymore

    • It appears that they used this game as a basis to 'practise' on the switch 2 development process.

It's easier and faster as the gameplay is already there - just apply graphics tech on it.
They would then apply what they learned from this process to newer entries or other future games.

It feels like maybe that's what they are doing as well to the rumored Zelda OoT remake - if it is anything to go by.

  • The game's graphics and character models look pretty detailed — if this is how startfox is treated, can't wait to see what they do with Zelda, Xenoblade and Mario games graphics

    • It looks taxidermied

I'd argue Star Fox zero had better graphics

  • If you ordered this you can call Officeworks on 1300 633 423 to cancel it (took me about 2min)

Then you can preorder it for $79 from BIGW instead
