Postpaid Mobile Plan 40GB $15 Per Month for 6 Months @ Dodo

160

Not a dupe of this because the 50% discount is for 6 months, not 4, in combination with the elevated $70 cashback from TopCashback. Duplicate cashback offer removed from title — Mod.

Critical Information Summary.

Maths

If you stay for the full 6 month discount period:

$15 x 6 - $70 = $20.
Total cost averages to $3.33 per month.

If you want to hardcore min-max and only stay for the minimum 3 months to qualify for cashback:

$15 x 3 - $70 = -$25.
Total profit averages to $8.33 per month.

If you go down this path, please be careful with the exact definition of 90 days.

Basic info for newbies:

  • Optus network, shared with Vodafone in regional areas,
  • No eSIM, a significant chunk of Optus resellers don't have it whilst similar competitors using Vodafone seem to offer it more readily,
  • Postpaid, so you have to time the end of the discount period diligently to avoid paying full price,
  • Dodo's online portal and mobile app are horrible to use, so setting your own calendar reminders is helpful, however once you do manage to get past the login process, they do tell you when the discount period ends for each mobile service.
  • These plans have "unlimited" data in the sense that the headline data allocation is at full speed while anything after is slowed to 256Kbps. That should be just about usable for emergencies such for public transport apps, internet banking, Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp messages, Google Maps navigation, etc.
  • The above also means there are no excess data charges.
  • Cashback delay is set to 6 months by Dodo. TopCashback has no control over this.
  • SIM must be activated within a month and you must stay with them for 3 months.

Less important stuff

Dodo's 40GB and 80GB postpaid mobile plans are almost permanently "on sale" all year round for 50% off for 4 months, so they can be called "fake discounts" similar to what Coles and Woolworths are currently being accused of.

Occasionally they will upsize the 4 month discount to 6 months, which is what has happened here.

If your phone SIM tray supports 2 physical SIMs, rather than porting your main number, it may be a good idea to get a new disposable number with Dodo to avoid stress with porting out on the exact right day at the end of the discount period.

Instead, you just request the disposable number be cancelled on the last discounted month.

I.e. Have your main number on the $60 yearly call and text only plan from Amaysim or $10 yearly PAYG plan from Lebara (depending on how much you call and text others via main number) and use the Dodo SIM for data.

  • Dodo support is a mess to deal with IMO and their app is clunky 2000s style

  • Cancellation is PITA.

    • Not really.

When you're on your last monthly cycle, you choose the cancel service option and everything else largely takes care of itself.

      • I submitted a cancellation request in app. Their reply from app notification requested me to call or chat. Waited 30 min in chat. Was asked many questions why I cancelled. Tried to offer better plans. They proceeded after I insisted to cancel.

        • Ouch, sorry to hear about that. My experience was much smoother than that.

          • @scalebearer: I am glad you had a smooth experience.
Was your cancellation request submitted in app?

            • @Think: OP mentioned the cancel service option / button. In browser, it's near the top centre of the screen:-

Dashboard | Moving Home | Cancel Service | My services | Billing & Payment | Support

      • Doh I didn't even see the cancel service button previously.

I went through chat and it took between 10-15 minutes, although obviously not typing constantly back and forth. They only asked once why I wanted to cancel, and didn't try to sell me anything or impede the cancellation, so it was relatively painless and I'll continue to use Dodo.

        Thanks for posting this deal.

    • Is transfer to another provider while with DODO the same process as you described? I thought it would be like other providers. When you sign up with another provider and keep your number, it's all automated. No need to call customer support at all.

  • Thanks.

… in combination with the elevated $70 cashback from TopCashback

Has the cashback offer changed, or have I missed something? I'm seeing $50 cashback instead of $70.

I mean it's still good. Just checking.

    • It has changed.

It was $70 not too long ago.

$50 is the base cashback rate.

I'm sure it will go back up in a few weeks or months.

Ideal scenario is to combine elevated cashback from TCB and a 6 month discount from Dodo (normal discount period is 4 months).

      • Cool. Thanks again

  • WTAF
Port out impossible, dodo want to steal my number….
cancelled as per agreement.. Now cant receive a text.. network in/out disabled completely, at around 7pm

  • If I want to stick with a sim only provider, on the cheap, and port in and out 6 monthly, but don't want to go to a Vodafone provider, is this my best outside of Telstra?

    • Finder may offer cashback in the form of a gift card with Optus' 6 month prepaid plan, but that is not currently available.

Also, Dodo do not offer 6 month honeymoon rates all year round.
The usual is 4 months, with occasional increases to 6 months a few times a year, EOFY being one of them.

I think you may find this offer disappearing and reverting back to 4 months after the 30th.

      • I managed to negotiate my $60/month 60gb Optus plan down to $25/month for 12 months
Which saved me moving from Optus to Dodo, despite Dodo being slightly cheaper
        Less hassle

        • $300 per year is not great value and $720 is especially terrible.

You're paying a heavy loyalty tax in both cases.

Hopefully you make at least some use of Optus 5G and the other extras that major telcos tend to bundle with their plans, because otherwise you're effectively donating a huge chunk of money to a big corporation.

There is a reason they were able to cut your bill by more than half when you just asked. It's because their profit margins are fat enough to do so.

          • @scalebearer: Certainly agree, some of it is the trade off in terms of my time to port in and out etc, loyalty tax is real. Also would rather no phone than use a vodafone network from my history with them, so optus network limits possibilities
