    That's pretty steep. My installer only needed 10% deposit and the rest payable AFTER install. If you stand by your installation workmanship, than you wouldn't need such a high deposit.

    • same. and thank god for that coz I got australia's crappiest installer to do mine, and as a result I'm in a dispute with them, as it is a non-compliant installation due to their shitty workmanship. they can have the other 90% when they've come back to fix it all.

    • Agreed - it’s a bit concerning. I missed the last rebate cutoff - ironically the inverter (not Fox brand) also didn’t come in stock in time to make the install date.

      I’m cash in hand ready to go, but the way this reads - is it 60% - at $8k that’s $4800, or even worse, $1000 PLUS 60% prior to install?

      Considering my coworkers best friend paid his deposit and his battery company promptly folded and he lost all his money….. this feels quite risky.

    • We have reasonable price beat policy. For any company who has physical stock in australia, once you receive an after-inspection quote from them, we will beat their price by 5% if we can service. Green loan or free battery program excluded.

  • Can I still grab this battery deal if I don't have solar panels yet?

    • Some energy retailers offer a 3 hour free electricity usage period. So you probably don't need solar to get battery. Charge from the grid during this period and use it over the evening period.

      • You can get a battery without solar - yes.
        But you can't get the government grant (with the pricing in this deal) if you don't have solar.

        You can get solar at the same time as the battery and still get the government grant.

        Or if you don't want solar, you can still buy a battery - it will just cost you a fair bit more.

    • Most batteries sold in Australia don't have a heating element. Also it's not like they don't work at all, they simply reduce charging speeds.
      People who complain should've done their homework read the spec sheet look at their temperature and use common sense. Every battery will reduce its charging rate when it gets too cold or hot. Between 20 and 30C is ideal.

    • The pictures in the article are taken from foxess owners australia facebook page. There has been an update and this restriction is removed and batteries can charge will 8-11 kw.
      Probably the writer conveniently not wanting to update the article.

  • Nice offer. I got my eq4800 +15kw inverter installed in October last year and am very happy. Worked flawlessly during summer and autumn. The app has received some nice updates and looks very good and has all the features I need, namely scheduling and firmware updates. It's also supported by most VPPs.

    Definitely get as much capacity as possible, you will use it, especially during the colder months. Don't listen to those '15kwh is sufficient'-people. Those are the same people that said 100mbit/s is all we ever need and fibre is overkill. Lol.

    We are virtually off-grid since last October.

    • How much do you save per month? I think you're only paying the daily supply charge.

      What is your ROI?

      • I calculated my ROI before I bought the battery with solar quotes and it came out at 5-6 years for fox. That was based on our previous usage. Since then our usage has literally doubled to nearly tripled…we got an EV, because the huge battery allows us to still be 'off grid' when it's a little cloudy. And no it's not bad for the battery. I've got close to 100 cycles and the battery health is still at 100%. The battery is really just supplementing solar during the charging process.
        I would say 3-4 years and we are done.

        I've tried amber over the summer and autumn and I CAN NOT recommend it for Brisbane. Not a single spike and the subscription fee kills all the gains. The best I got was $20 credit and the worst I had to pay $30. It's a tiny amount, but we also didn't use the grid. I will now start the churning game again. Starting with AGL and always trying to get those new customer benefits. The beauty is that the battery will cover everything, no matter how bad the conditions are.

        • That's really helpful. Actually, I got into an argument with a friend and he really piss3ed me off saying everyone trying to get battery due to a fomo or ROI is not worth it. My house in under construction, I went through so many hoops to get a fox system, builder and installer conflicts, warranty issues, etc.

          I got 48kwh battery, 15kw inverter and 16.1kw pv, I don't have any bills to calculate my roi because I live in a tiny unit. I don't have EV arm but I already plan for it, got the EV charging point.

          The same friend of mine told us a story that one of their friends does not turn on heating and instead gives them blankets lol 😂 I don't want to be that guy.

            To be fair to your friend - that used to be the case (and I was also one of those people who had done the numbers and had come to that same conclusion).
            But with the current government rebates combined with some significant decreases in battery prices - for most people there is definitely a decent ROI.

            1-2 years ago (pre-rebates and at the prices at the time) I was looking at a 10 year ROI - and for me that wasn't worth it.
            Now I am looking at about 3 years - not just because I was able to get a much larger battery at a lower price than I could 1 year ago, but because with the battery, I have now altered my usage to further maximise my savings.

            If I didn't adjust my usage I would still be looking at a 4-5 year ROI (which was why I went ahead with it). But if you are able to adjust as well - even better.

            In some ways it is a shame you won't be able to have a direct "before and after" comparison due to moving from your unit.
            But given the system you have described, you should be able to have a zero bill each month (assuming you aren't operating a commercial kitchen from home etc).
            My FIL has a 50kWh battery, 12kW inverter and 16kW solar inverter (21kW panels). He was previously having negative bills in summer and slight positive bills in winter.
            Now he is going into this winter and each bill is (and will continue to be) negative and summer will be an even larger negative.

            I have had to go onto Globird because my solar is much smaller - but for him, he has just stayed on his normal retailer, doesn't have any free charge periods, but can export at any time to get back more in feed-in tariff than his fixed daily charge.

            • @clintdb: I think even if they make day time electricity free for everyone, as there's everyone exporting, even then it's worth it. If you add EV to the mix, the deal sweetens even more. I don't have a chimerical kitchen but I changed for gas to induction indoors, gas outdoors. You can always switch to make some gains as well if retailer doesn't matter after grid independence

          • @sqheaven: Obviously I took that huge battery because of the rebate otherwise I wouldn't have gotten one the value just wasn't there for me and just kept my solar, my ROI would have been well over 10 years, so outside of the warranty period.
            But the rebate changed everything and reduced by 50% and now that I know that electricity is practically free our whole usage pattern has changed and we are 'wasting' way more energy than before, eg, keeping the AC running for longer…way longer= and that improves quality of life. Or having a home server. All that stuff 'wastes' energy and now we don't care anymore. We are using 99% our own electricity.

            • @AE: AC use without caring about bills is a great life improvement and a luxury, my will only be 15kw even though a 18kw would have been a proper unit for our internal space, I bet it would work hard to keep the air quality at the set temperature in our west facing house. I think the biggest advantage to solar, and battery is if you also have a small EV. My friends who have this combo are praising free travel. No more gas dependency. I also have a lot of stuff that's always on, like dehumidifiers in winters. I relied on switching retailers to bring the bills down, but I don't have to do that anymore. Obama once said, it's not efficient to set temperature low and then wear sweaters indoors lol This got stuck in my head, I think setting temp wisely would also put less stress on your unit.

  • Quick question. I currently am on a plan that has $0.05/kW between 12-4am, and will be charging an electric car between those times as well using a 7kW charger.

    Can the batteries be charged at the same time to maximise savings, especially during the colder months where sun charging may not be enough to cover night usage.

      Slightly longer one:
      Most (pretty much all these days) batteries have the ability to use an associated app to set "custom" or "time of use" charge and discharge profiles.
      So you can create time windows to force the battery to charge at whatever rate you set.

      Eg: Start time 00:00, duration 4 hours, charge rate 10kW (or whatever your maximum inverter rate is).

      If the battery gets full sometime during that window then it will stop drawing from the grid, but note that it won't then start providing power back to you until the completion of the charging window you have set up. I mean you could then go into some Home Automation stuff to provide even more granular control, but most of us don't bother with that!

      • Thanks for the detailed answer. My concern was more on the circuit capacity. Because I read somewhere that a single phase house typically has about 15kW of supply, so based on that charging 7kW and 10kW (plus background stuff) at the same time will overload the circuit.

        Was wondering how true the above is, and is charging at max 15kW at all time detrimental to the house circuitry.

        Does the battery app or the grid able to know how much has been drawn, and only send the remaining power to the battery, i.e. 8kW drawn so battery only charges at 7kW instead of pulling the full 10kW.

        • The easiest way to verify is to check your main fuse and main safety switch.
          Whatever they are rated at in Amps, multiply that by 240V and you will get your maximum power.

          If your gear is rated to 50A then that would be 50 x 240 = 12,000 = 12kW
          If it is 80A then it would be 80 x 240 = 19.2kW and so on.

          If you try to draw any more than your maximum then you will trip the safety switch (or blow the fuse if it is rated lower than the safety switch - but it shouldn't be!).

          You should be able to set your battery charge rate (most apps allow this), so if you are concerned about exceeding your overall limit, just adjust it lower accordingly.
          If your limit is 15kW and you have 7kW EV charging and 2kW household loads after you go to bed, then set the inverter to pull in max 5kW (just to be safe).

          EDIT.
          I should add that you could also look into upgrading your supply to 3 phase.
          Sometimes it's not that expensive (my FIL did it a couple of years ago and it was only about $2k or thereabouts). It obviously depends on where you are, where your poles and wires are etc etc - lots of different factors.
          But it is certainly worthwhile to investigate, because it would not only solve your current issue but allow you so many more options in the future.

          Or you could wind your EV charging down (7kW for 4 hours would give you approx 40-50% back depending on your car etc). So if you only need, say, 20% each night, you could drop the EV charging rate down to 3-4kW and then have your inverter pulling 6-7kW for the whole 4 hours.

    I have a very nice looking set of tin in my garage, just a shame I can't use it at the moment.

    • There is an absolute long wait for the independent checks to be done as much more than anticipated units were recently installed. Mine was installed in 8th Apr & inspected on 12th May.

      Guess it’s probably another week to 10 days before you get the inspection done 👍

    • Unfortunately 15kW are not the part of this deal. I would suggest wating for the new unit launch.

        • Fox ESS are waiting for CEC approval but should not late than July.

            • @internet-stranger: Sorry for my words but I’m referring to the ‘new unit launch’, the CQ7 battery. It is waiting for CEC.

              We do have H3 smart, H3 Pro and H3 Plus in stock. It’s just not part of this promotion.

              • @MilkteaS: What's the main updates with CQ7? Any chance you could find out if it has the heating element? Otherwise is it just better sizing/ price for current rebates?

                • @B-Moose: Only models ending in (w) such as CQ7-M-50 (w), or CQ7-S-50 (w) contain the Battery Warm up heating element.
                  It is unfortunately optional just like it is in the CQ6 battery.

                  To my knowledge, no importer / distributor has brought any of the CQ6 / CQ7 models with the heating element into Australia.
                  As such, it could be a strategic advantage for PA Power (which directly imports the batteries) to do so if the cost difference is negligible.

                  This will become more apparent during winter when the battery temperature falls below 11 degrees, and customers find it more difficult to charge the battery to full capacity during the free charging period with negligible solar.

                  • @JohnSy: I queried this with ASB and they responded about CQ7:
                    The CQ7 features a constant temperature control system, automatic heating, and a passive cooling system with a strong airflow duct.
                    But let's wait and see when customers have them.

                      You can see the normal version CQ7-M-50 and CQ7-S-50, versus the CQ7-M-50 (w) and CQ7-S-50 (w). The Operating charge / discharge temperature of the warming version is different when the heater is enabled. Page 22 vs Page 25.

                      Please note the datasheet doesn't show the temperature derating which occurs as the battery falls in temperature, but having said that, a warming version is capable of raising the temperature of the battery above 11 degrees, which is important since that result in charging at almost the full charging rates. For me, a 15kW 3 phase Pro inverter with a battery above 11 degrees can charge at 14.2kW, below 11 degrees it charges at 4.2kW from the grid. (BMS version 2.012). I expect these results will improve with future BMS revisions.

                    • @B-Moose: I can confirm after todays cold weather, that BMS 2.016 on a H3 15 Pro has now introduced a higher charge rate of 9.36kW. The threshold is likely 9 degrees. In my case, the free charging period began with battery at 9.6 degrees. Charging rate was 9.36kw. Battery temperture rose to above 11 degrees after 40 minutes of charging, at which point the Charging rate jumped to 14.4kW. With the higher charging rates, I now think CQ6 Batteries with a 15 kW inverter might now be able to fill themselves from the grid during the free energy period without much help from solar on cold days. If initial charging is now 9.2kW this may be able to raise the battery temperature enough so that the 14.2kW charging rate kicks in early enough to allow time to fill the battery before the free charging period ends.

    I am currently based in QLD and I understand you don't service QLD as of yet. But I am keen to know how the free inverter deal from FOX works.

    I am on the look out for a 10KW inverter + 42 KWH battery and have gotten some quotes as well, but when I ask the retailer about the free inverter deal by FOX, they don't seem to have a clue.

    Can you outline how this works? Does the retailer/installer give the inverter for free to the customer once the installation is complete and does FOX pay the retailer the full inverter amount?
