$40k in Upcoming Purchases for Home Reno - How to Maximise Value

A question for the smart people of Ozbargain:

We've got some significant purchases to make fairly soon, at least $40,000 worth, for appliances, furniture, fittings etc.

What's the best way to maximise the value of these purchases?

We have QFF, so we'll get points if we make them on our Mastercard ($1 = 1.2 QFF points), but is it worth looking at a different card? AMEX, for example! Or something else?

Grateful for any advice.

  • Gumtree?

    • Gumtree is a dead platform. I'd go with The Trading Post.

  • Which mastercard gets you 1.2 points per $?

    • Ask google?

    • Good point (pardon the pun) - it's only for international purchases on CBA Ultimate awards.

      • well… you're probably not spending international, so something like the qantas amex ultimate gets you 1.25QFF on everyday local spend? Current signup bonus is only 50,000 points but better than nothing. Be warned I was recently declined for this card, but I (used to) churn cards a lot and they're cracking down on card churners.

  • Rather than looking for reward points for your purchases, look for a better priced product.

    • Is possible to do both.

      • Yes it is, but save the effort for finding a better value item where youll get the biggest return for your time. Reward points will onky get a fraction of the return.

    • Yep, good advice.
