  • Example in NSW:

    Supply charge (¢/day) 111.1
    Peak (¢/kWh) 46.2
    Off Peak (¢/kWh) 38.753
    High Season Demand (c/kW/day) 15.697
    Low Season Demand (c/kW/day) 8.118
    EV off peak (¢/kWh) 4.5

    • seasonal demand???

      • Demand tariff. It is a new tariff designed to scam consumers.

        • Agree, if going by the Amber FB group is an indication 99% of consumers don't know what a demand tariff is and no idea how to calculate.

"To calculate the demand tariff, multiply your highest peak power usage (in kilowatts) during the specified peak window each month by the retailer's demand charge rate and the number of days in that month.

In simple terms ~$4.5 per kw, for simplicity lets assume the peak is 10kw (AC spiked, perhaps kettle\toaster on). That's an easy $40 charge. But as these target EV owners, make a mistake a charge during the peak window and ouch.

        • oh they pull that BS in qld. if.you have a smart meter.

It's the highest 30mins of usage.during 4-8pm, double it to make it an hour, times by the number of days in a month.

So if I have the oven & aircon on, that might use 6kw in 30mins, so thats 12kwh x 31 day x 0.157 = $58.40 plus your normal charge, say 40c/kwh so that 30mins costs you $58.80.

suddenly that Sunday roast is bloody expensive.

    • That peak should be illegal!!!!

  • Hm, I'm getting "Something went wrong" message after I enter my address or NMI. However, if I select next house on the street, I can see the EV plan.
I have smart meter, EV registered on this address. The only difference with my neighbour is I have a battery and solar installed.
So it's either my address is banned for some reason, or they do not want clients with battery?

    • Your current retailer provider may have added a tariff/code that isn't supported by the new retailer.

For me, this was CRDS, which is a temporary trial tariff from CitiPower.

    • I had to get my current retailer to move me to a tariff supported by Ovo before this plan became available to me.

  • Seems like pretty bad rates

    Supply charge (¢/day):
    115.5
    Peak (¢/kWh)
    50.38
    Off Peak (¢/kWh):
    35.53
    Shoulder (¢/kWh):
    38.28
    EV off peak (¢/kWh)
    4.5
    Solar feed-in tariff (¢/kWh):
    Solar export
    2.7

    • I believ Globird offers the same +3 hours during the day that’s really cheap too.

      • Ovo has a better plan that has rates caped at 25c/kWh and 3 for free. I just switched from globird (who didn't even try and keep me by rolling my plan to a more affordable one).

Edit: at least for me, do your own comparison based off where you live and your usage.

    • As a disclaimer, I'm not with Ovo, but last time I looked at them, they were quite expensive, even if their rates seemed good on paper. From memory, they had some good rates for their solar plan on paper, but everything other than the FIT was so expensive that I would have been better off getting their base plan instead of their solar plan, so I highly recommend that people check the rates before signing up

    • Where are you?
It’s not so bad for me

      Rates
      Prices inclusive of GST
      Supply charge (¢/day):
      104.5
      Peak (¢/kWh)
      36.036
      Off Peak (¢/kWh):
      24.508
      EV off peak (¢/kWh)
      4.5
      Solar feed-in tariff (¢/kWh):
      Solar export
      1

      • I should have mentioned: QLD

    • I am in Sydney and moved from OVO to Globird due to the latter's higher 15c FIT for 15kwh and daily $1 bonus. I have a small solar array so I charge my battery and EV during their free power window resulting in free power during the evening. I net $1.85 in credit daily or $675 pa.

      • Was the 1.85 bonus inc the $1 bonus?

  • Ev plan had the 3 free as well (11am-2pm) which was removed.

Looks like peak rate on the ev plan has shot up too..overall likely more expensive than the previous 8c/kwh

    • Yeah that's now a legacy plan. I am still on that rate and hope it doesn't change for me. Works out better in my case.

      • Same, zero hero is better in summer but stayed on this plan especially for winter. Running the AC all night is peanuts, also top-up the battery before 6am if it's going to be cloudy, to get me through to 11am.

Ironically, mainly charge the EV from solar or the FREE window.

  • Quote for me in SA:
    Rates
    Prices inclusive of GST
    Supply charge (¢/day):
    147.4
    Peak (¢/kWh)
    65.714
    Shoulder (¢/kWh):
    43.945
    EV off peak (¢/kWh)
    4.5
    Solar feed-in tariff (¢/kWh):
    Solar export
    1.5

Compared to my current plan with AGL:

Electricity usage Unit GST excl. GST incl.
    Peak 1
    c/kWh 46.31000 50.941000
    Shoulder 2
    c/kWh 21.28000 23.408000
    Off peak 3
    c/kWh 30.10000 33.110000
    Night Saver EV
    charge
    c/kWh 7.27272 8.000000
    Feed-in tariff c/kWh 2.00000
    Supply charge c/day 95.04000 104.544000

    • yes, the Ovo EV rate is cheaper, but everything else is a rip off. Shifty way of making people think they are getting a good deal. Plus you have to pay a 5% surcharge on top of the rates you've mentioned to avoid the bill smoothing rubbish.

    • Thanks for this…

Saves me wasting time on this trash in SA.

  • do they offer the free 3hr window on top of this rate or it's one or the other?

    • One or the other unfortunately

    • Just wait till Oct then everyone will get it

      • They won't. Retailer can offer it in a specific plan

  • high supply charge is not talked about enough.

    • It is if you keep an eye out.
Last year (ish) the energy regulator suggested the supply charge should be more of the bill to help pay for the gold plated poles and wires.
So the suppliers jumped on the bandwagon to raise supply rates. So retailers pass that on.
The energy regulator regulates the supply charge maximum.
Retailers know that raising the supply charge and lowering the consumption charges means that your solar will eventually by worthless…
By that I mean that consumption charges (AND the feed-in tariff) will be a tiny part of your bill, and the supply charge will be the major part. All the solar you could fit on your roof wouldn't compensate. That would mean the destruction of the rooftop solar industry.

  • I am getting following

    Usage - Peak $0.3608
    Usage - Off Peak $0.1936
    Supply Charge $1.056
    FIT $0.01

    No EV charging. Have solar.

Is it too bad?? Please anyone can lmk. Thinking of switching to something better. If it's not too bad then might hang in. Am westpac customer, so not sure if AGL offer is worth it for some credit. Not a full time churner lol

    • Its an ev plan. Not sure you can get around it? Unless you declare false info?

      • It’s not. Never had one. Didn’t declare anything wrong.

  • Globird is offering free electricity from 10am to 2pm, I guess if you have a hybrid work arrangement, you could potentially maximise that window if you have either a 7kw/11kw/22kw home charger. Granny chargers probably won't get much in that 4hr window

    • Why do you need a hybrid work arrangement to maximise that window? Your car software/Type 2 charger doesn't have scheduling?

      • Because you need the car to be home during this time to charge and if you took the car to work then you can't do that.. nothing to do with scheduling.. LOL

        • This assumes your commute is driving not PT

          • @Gonltruck: If you have an EV and "free" electricity why use pt?

            • @jeffa: For some commuting in via pt might be faster / cheaper / less stressful than driving.

            • @jeffa: So that I don’t pay $40 a day for CBD parking?

    • Just curious how much does the supercharger cost to install at home? Like the ones you see in car parks

      • A supercharger is generally 50+ kW and cannot be installed in a residential setting.

If you are referring a type 2 charger typically 7kW on single phase or 22kW on 3 phase, then the charger itself is typically $700-$1500 depending on features plus install of around $750 depending on complexity

        • 22KWH charging is car dependent even on 3 phase. Most EVs earlier than 2024 will only do 11KWH at 3 phase and it's only the later ones that will do 22KWH.

          • @bchliu: Hence the typically in the middle of that sentence

          • @bchliu: Also kWh is not a unit of charging speed, that is a measurement of storage capacity in this context.

  • Good if you have a battery but small solar too.

  • Can you use this to charge a home battery?

    • Yes of course. I have FoxESS and charge from midnight to 6 (if needed) then off solar during the day. We are off-grid from 3pm-9pm.

      • Been thinking about getting a home battery only setup (no solar).

Charge at night using cheap rate and running through the whole day.

        • I think if I got a bigger battery inverter I could do this. We only got a 5kwh inverter to match our solar.

        • I thought the same thing, but what I was told by a battery seller last year was the battery rebates are unavailable if your house does not have solar. So then prohibitively expensive. Buying a battery and a solar install was much cheaper than just buying battery.

          • @ekswhyzed: My plan was to buy a second hand battery and have that installed. I assume there’s no reason that wouldn’t be possible. As long as I have an EV I’m eligible for this plan.

            • @vodamerc: Hmm, second hand battery. Is there any available? What about warranty and lifespan?

              • @jeffa: Heaps of Telsa powerwall 2’s on marketplace for around $2.5-3k including gateway. Warranty doesn’t concern me too much but they are 10 years anyway. Not sure if the warranty is valid once it’s reinstalled.

      • Why would you not do the 3 or 4 hours free plans instead if you have a battery and Solar? Charge the car and home battery for free during these periods instead of even paying the 4.5c a KW?

        • Are there any 3-4 free hour plans that are 100% green yet? Otherwise they are harmful.

          • @King Steuart: The whole point about the 3-4 hours free plans is that the solar is overloading the grid is it not?

            https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-11-03/energy-retailers-offe…

I honestly don't think you can get "100% green" - but on average overall it will be majority from the excess generated by solar unless it's on crappy rainy days.

            • @bchliu: Hey I'm down for any plan that offers both, it's only a matter of time and I think OVO will potentially offer it.

I don't think 3-4 hours free daily charging off other people's solar panels is enough for our 124kwh of storage

              • @King Steuart: Holy crap.. how you get so much storage? Normal houses are ~40KWH for single phase and ~50KWH for triple.

You're more limited by your phase circuit(s) in anyway during the "free" period. I'm a single phase on 60A circuit so limited to 14.5KW coming in.

                • @bchliu: Home battery + car, so I've got 42kwh and then the 82kwh Seal

                  • @King Steuart: I have similar set up if you "count" the car in.. 84KwH Ioniq 5N.
3 hours free charges me around 20KWH on single phase (7kw).. I usually charge around 2-3 times through the week which is around how much I use.

  • Example in NSW

    One Plan without EV
    Rates
    Prices inclusive of GST
    Supply charge (¢/day): 103.4
    Peak (¢/kWh) 27.83
    Off Peak (¢/kWh): 27.83

    Peak Demand (c/kW/day) 42.343
    Solar feed-in tariff (¢/kWh): Solar export 2.8

    One Plan with EV
    Rates
    Prices inclusive of GST
    Supply charge (¢/day): 103.4
    Peak (¢/kWh) 34.815
    Off Peak (¢/kWh): 34.815
    Peak Demand (c/kW/day) 42.343
    EV off peak (¢/kWh) 4.5
    Solar feed-in tariff (¢/kWh): Solar export 2.8

Since when is paying 25% more a deal?

    • If you charge or did washing, run aircon, dryer, dishwasher all during the cheaper hours at night, it's actually much cheaper than what you would be paying not on the EV plan
it works for those that maximise the cheapest rates at those time frames. Those who just use whatever and run whatever whenever, won't benefit off this and pay more . It's a matter of making yourself and your family members or household stick to the timings to maximise your lower rates where possible

      • "It's a matter of making yourself and your family members or household stick to the timings to maximise your lower rates where possible"

Then best to go with the plan that has 2-4 hours free energy use. Get everyone to sit at home during that period and do everything whilst it is "free".

    • when is paying 25% more a deal?

      A deal for the shareholders.

      • According to Gemini

"OVO Energy is owned and controlled by its founder, Northern Irish businessman Stephen Fitzpatrick, alongside major institutional shareholders including the Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Corporation and London-based private equity firm Mayfair Equity Partners."

        • Yes, they are shareholders. And???

  • It still works out to be way more expensive on this OVO plan compared to AGL's 8cent overnight plan, at least where I am in VIC. Ovo's peak rate is ridiculous.

    • much more expensive than AGL in sydney as well

    • Way more expensive compared to Origin in SA too. Like ridiculously more expensive for usual daily supply charges and peak usage.

  • Supply charge is high. On AGL right now at 80c/day. Although overnight rate is 8c/kWh, still works out cheaper. Have a large battery so peak rates don't matter to me.

  • These rates are criminal

  • VIC

    Usage - Peak: 29.381c
    Usage - Off Peak: 4.4999c
    Supply Charge: 94.6c

    • Not bad rates

      • Yeah by the looks of it, I'm one of the lucky ones.

        • If rates are this good, would be even better with others. Try powershop. $0.05/kW 12-6am for me (United)

          • @plague69: I had a mate send me a referral so I've got $180 back over 12 months. So $15 a month off.

I did look into Powershop - but not as good, see below their rates:

Super Off Peak tariff (incl GST)
            4.99c/kWh

            Daily supply charge (incl GST)
            119.9c/day

            Peak tariff (incl GST)
            40.69c/kWh

            Off Peak tariff (incl GST)
            22.89c/kWh

            Solar feed-in tariff
            0.5c/kWh

  • The QLD rates are horrific. WTF

  • I don’t think this is a deal in the true ozbargain sense.

It’s a more complex tariff structure that may suit you if you have an ev and probably a home battery. You need to work it to make it a deal

Honestly a post with simply the cheapest flat rate $/kwh is probably more suitable as a deal for most.

  • I’m just with redenergy. 28c all the time. Have solar. 4.5c sounds good but you pay it back in about 2 weeks with those daily connection and peak charges. Not a deal.

  • Bummer, I switched to this EV plan coming from the old EV plan not knowing super peak was not included.

I have always scheduled my inverter (battery) to always charge from 11 to 2pm, whilst EV charges 12 to 6am all whilst everything is either solar diversion or set not to charge.

Oh well, looking forward to October 2026 for VIC I guess.

  • negging for visibility - OVO is one of the suppliers that charge demand tariff on their plans. google it if you've not heard of it before, it's the biggest scam

  • I think the AGL 12-6am @ 8c EV deal is better. You can charge your house battery as well as the EV as well as service your house under the same tariff. Seems like this deal needs a EV charger that they can monitor for usage.

    • Not true. It’s 4.5c/kWh for all usage.

  • Will this get mandatory 3 hours free from July?

  • I'm currently on AGL's EV Night Saver Plan, this is what I'm paying

    Example in VIC

    Supply charge (¢/day) 110.26
    Peak (¢/kWh) 34.97
    Off Peak (¢/kWh) 22.5
    EV off peak (¢/kWh) 8

    The advertised OVO deal

    Supply charge (¢/day) 106.7
    Peak (¢/kWh) 38.30
    Off Peak (¢/kWh) 20.99
    EV off peak (¢/kWh) 4.5

Estimated savings of $17 a month.

But due to OVO's bill smoothing it's not going to be noticable.

    • What is bill smoothing?

  • What do you guys think it’s the best deal for me:
    - Current (Powershop):
    Supply charge (¢/day):
    88
    Peak (¢/kWh)
    52.8
    Off Peak (¢/kWh):
    26.4
    EV off peak (¢/kWh),12-4am
    5

    -OVO:
    Supply charge (¢/day):
    113.3
    Peak (¢/kWh)
    43.46
    Off Peak (¢/kWh):
    24.94
    EV off peak (¢/kWh) 12-6am
    4.5

    -AGL:
    Supply charge (¢/day):
    120.23
    Peak (¢/kWh)
    39.78
    Off Peak (¢/kWh):
    20.38
    EV off peak (¢/kWh) 12-6
    8

I charge my EV during the EV off peak time.
I’m not sure should I change to OVO, cause Powershop has the cheapest daily supply charge,

    Thanks

  • It's a strange timeslot to cheap electricity, sounds like they are flogging off coal for cheap while they still can.

    • Yea. I avoid charging when the coal plants are working… Hope no-one using the cheap overnight EV plan argues about their EVs green credentials.

      • Most people don’t drive EV’s to save the world.

We have them to save money and a better driving experience.

        • I am in disbelief. You mean, all the things about EV is greener is a hoax? :)

  • 4.5c vs 8.0c from AGL super off peak could be tempting.

im sure AGL may have a plan to combat this, or they'll lose customers.

  • Do they still do the usual 11 am - 2 pm free electricity?
Thanks to that, and their 8c per kw for EV charging between 12am to 6 am I think I paid only $25 pm on electricity for almost 15 months way back when. The referral system helps too.

  • I recently changed over to OVO to find that they cancelled the older plan where they had this EV charging at night, but also allowed for 3 hours free charging between 10am-2pm. That was the more optimum plan to do for Solar/Battery combinations this since it allows flexibility of charging for free during the day and charging very little at night. Unfortunately they pulled out the plans in December and no longer offer it and split it up as being one or the other. I went with the 3 hrs free plan instead given I can charge both my battery and car during the days when I WFH.

    • With a decent size battery and solar I need very little power from the grid on the summer end of the seasons, except on cloudy days when the three hours free is handy. In the more wintery days those free hours are a must, but but my overall draw is still very very low. I do not force export from my battery since I want to keep all the power for me (and I use it most nights, especially at this time of year).

In most cases it works out that the combination of free hours + $1 credit on GloBirds Zero Hero is worth more to me than cheap EV rates… even with an EV that is away from home on work days.

The real numbers…. my Summer bills are under $10/ month, my May bill is going to be about $35. The OVO plan seems to be around the same numbers (with their 3 hours free plan) with slightly lower rates, but the $1 zero hero credit is still enough to push me just infront in Winter and well infront in Summer… to the tune of a handful of dollars.

      • I'm changing over to Globird soon too - with the zero hero credit and a much better feedin rate, will make it truly zero monthly bills.
