    • Have you tried coffee made using that Kmart grinder? Doesnt sound like you have

      • I don’t think badwolf519 can grind International Roast

    • average stoner comment

      • Hey hey… average?? Please, ALL bogan stoner comments

    • I can't believe anyone is actually replying to your garbage..

but just use x for x (apply to anything)

  • TL;DR for the money it’s great, but it has some issues. (I would happily buy one again, though hopefully once they’ve released a gen 2 with some of the issues fixed)

I have one and it has its pros and cons.
The grinds are consistent and adjustment is easy and stays put.
The bellows is good for emptying the last bit of coffee from the machine.
The bellows design isn’t great - it doesn’t have anything to stop the parts separating, which it will do every time you lift it up to pour more beans in.
The grind time is looooong. A 20g grind takes about 50 sec.
I’m not sure if the last problem is unique to me (something I’m doing wrong?) but the ground coffee seems to get a static charge. I’ve tried a small spray of water and that helps a bit, but not a full solve. Never had this problem with my old grinder (breville smart grinder)

    • Does yours have the ioniser? It's meant to help with static

      • I don’t think so, will have to investigate, thanks.

      • Mine ran into problem after a few weeks.
Needing constant cleaning. The ioniser works at time.
I have communicated this with the seller and was directed to self help in how to clean and maintain them.
This unit is cheap but poorly design requiring high maintenance.

I will neg this post to warn others.

        • Had issues with a DF64E and the seller. Long story but still using it but wishing for an upgrade.

    • Try turning the bellows upside down (the silicone part). The part that connects to the machine and the part where the wooden lid connects is slightly different

      • Thanks, I’ve tried that. Found which way up to was better and have stuck with it, but it still isn’t a solid enough connection to stay put. I’m planing on making a new lid with a wider shoulder so the bellows stays put better.

        • Throw an elastic band on the metal side of the grinder, and then place the bellows over the top of it - the extra fiction keeps it in place!

    • A lot of people on reddit complain about the grinder clogging/jamming. Thats the only reason I havent jumped on this.

      • Have had this grinder for about 6 months and not a single issue so far, grinding 20g daily. Never cleaned or serviced once yet.

Before buying, I read about the clogging and saw that some mentioned the grinder should be running before adding beans to prevent this. Obviously, I can't say this is 100% the solution without having two machines side by side, but I'm very happy with it so far.

        • I've had the clogging issue a few times. I notice it happens more with fresher beans, as in clogging for me tends to happen more with a new pack of beans vs when I've had the pack for a bit. I always run it before adding beans so it doesn't fix that. I keep the little chute brush next to the machine now and give it a clean maybe a few times a week and haven't had it clog since. As others have said, it produces good grounds and is very cheap comparatively. So I can live with the extra upkeep vs having to cough up quite a bit more for the conevenience.

    • Agree with all of these points, I previously also had a Breville SGP.

A small rubber band between the bellow and grinder provides enough grip to prevent the bellow from falling off when removing the lid.

I find the ioniser works for a few weeks but gets worse once it's covered in grinds, clean out the the chute and it's good for a few more weeks till there is static build up again.

      • I just pump the bellows every couple seconds while I'm grinding and it hasn't clogged once yet.
A little water spray does help.
I bought a cheapo little water spray de-ioniser thing from Aliexpress and it helped too - although I've gone through two of these things and both died after a couple weeks.
I just ordered a literal manual spray instead as the electric ones are crap and keep failing on me.

      • I've been using the breville sgp for like 10+ years lol. Is this worth the upgrade?

        • Retention wasn't great on the sgp, from memory it was about 10% less. The more annoying part was that it wasn't consistent with how much it retained.

Don't have any issues with clumping anymore either.

It's worth the upgrade, 0 regrets switching to the DF54.

    • Agree with your thoughts there.

I find with the bellow, I just squeeze it at the mid-section and it tends to pop the lid off without the whole piece coming out. Not the most elegant solution but at its price, I'm not that concerned. Otherwise, I just bellow using my hand to cover the top section and that works too.
In terms of static, you need to use a small brush (which came with the unit) to clean the spout. I do it every couple of weeks. This normally fixes it first time.

The only issues I've had with this grinder are when I got the beans too wet. Never get any liquid near the burrs! It clogs everything up, had to strip it down and let it dry and then grind from coarse to fine again. The other issue was when I was grinding super dark and oily beans and once again, it clogged, maybe could have been ok if I had been bellowing as I went but ultimately got stuck much like when I had got too much moisture near the burrs.

I've been super happy with this grinder stepping up from the Smart Grinder Pro.

    • I have the DF64 and can say that it doesn't have any of the listed issues for me. It's been great for the ~2 years I've owned it with the only downside for me being that it's a bit loud. Might be worth looking into?

      • Same. Brilliant grinder.

    • I’m not sure if the last problem is unique to me (something I’m doing wrong?) but the ground coffee seems to get a static charge

The earlier versions of the DF54 and 64 had serious static issues, but if you're happy pulling apart electronics you can mostly fix it by hooking up a ground wire from the metal burr chamber housing to the ground wire

      • Really? So it effectively discharges via the home's ground wiring?

    • 50 second grind time? That’s insane. My specialita grinds 18gr in 10 seconds.

      • yeah I stopped at that point. 50 seconds, no deal.

      • Same here

    • I just timed it, and I get 18g out in about 25-30 seconds. Are you using lighter roasts?

As for static charge, they are already onto "V3" of this model, with a new chute design and better aligned ionisers. If you have a model with ionisers, they might not be aligned properly, so you can remove the chute and slightly move them down so they are just slightly hanging out. That, combined with a metal dosing cup (I've never used the plastic one that came with it) produces practically no static or retention for me.

Here is a short YT video that explains how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/DquArmZW8mA

    • It's ridiculous that all these expensive grinders have more than a couple of issues.
How hard can it be? One of the reasons I haven't upgraded my EM0480 conical burr grinder, which is still going strong.

.. and for this reason, I'm out.

  • I've purchased from these guys before. Pretty smooth and painless process.

That said, HODL for $1000 mahlkonig e80s

  • My sette 270s noise has been driving me crazy but I feel like I need to get a clearer upgrade to replace a working grinder. But a clearer upgrade is closer to 1k than $500 probably.

I also have a baratza encore for filter too my coffee experience is very loud all round lol.

  • My son recently poured water into the grinder of my Breville Barista Touch. Now it takes 45 seconds instead of 20 seconds to grind a single dose, even after our attempts to service and clean it as much as possible. We also have to run it on level 4 instead of level 10 to get the same shot as previously.
I know people rate the Breville grinders low, but it's always done the job. I feel like getting it serviced would cost close to the price of a new standalone grinder.

Any opinions on what we should do?
PS we have decided to keep the son

    • How deep did you clean it? Breville grinders have a felt washer underneath the burr which might have swelled and is pushing the burr higher perhaps?

Another option is a manual grinder; for a bit over $100 you can get a good one, takes up less bench space, quieter

      • Thanks everyone for the feedback! I love this community.
I was actually in hospital when they cleaned it but they did replace the felt washer yes, however when my dad pulled it apart again to attempt to clean it he said the washer tore. So might need another one ($20 shipped ugh).

Unfortunately a manual grinder doesn't satisfy the wife approval factor. We always make at least 2 double shots at once and often 4-5 with family over so it's not ideal.

        • If you get a dosing cup, you can grind beans into the cup in between extractions and cleaning the old puck. Then, you won't waste time even if the grind takes 50s.

        • I got a pack of felt washers from aliexpress for much less than that: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008521941106.html - I'd offer you send you a couple, but I sold the grinder a couple of weeks ago and gave them with that.

I also tore my washer when doing a deep clean - it didn't quite fit back together right. Hence the new washers…

    • If you love your coffee then purchase a decent stand alone grinder. You won't look back. In regards to what your budget, personally I would spend more on the grinder than the coffee machine. I started with the Breville Smart grinder, it did a decent job and you could get good coffee out of it but I found it inconsistent at times.
Or, as someone else mentioned you could get a manual grinder and do a little bit of exercise when you make coffee. Just annoying when you have to make back to back coffees.

      • Thanks for the reply.
Given that we paid like $1200 for the machine (that has made over 2k coffees iirc) I can't spend that much on a grinder right now (I am off work due to cancer treatment).
Frustratingly the grinder is making decent enough coffees still - it's just so slow. It's really hard to decide where to put the money - a manual grinder and let the wife deal with it, a new grinder for around this price, or service the current one (or deal with the slower grinding but I don't like the idea that it could be damaging the machine/putting metal shavings in the coffee grinds).

        • Sorry to hear about your situation. All the best on your battle.

Just in regards to the hand grinder if you do go down that path. The Kingrinder (K6) which I have can be attached to a drill. Everyone raves about the K4 which is always sold out and really hard to find but the K6 does a pretty good job. I sometimes use it when I have buy different beans like single origins. Just be warned to hold on tight as it'll need a lot of torque for espressos.

    • Did you replace the felt pad underneath the grind-pushing wheel (which sits underneath the lower burr)? If that is caked up it'll slow down the motor because of friction.
      https://www.breville.com/en-au/product/sp0001575

Update: a 45second grind time for ~20 grams indicates that the burrs are worn (especially if the whole grinder path is clean) + reducing the detent to a "4" is crushing rather than cutting the coffee beans. It's probably best to replace both the upper and lower burr now, as you might've ground down the cutting surface as you dialled it in - if conical burrs touch metal to metal you'll immediately blunt the cutting surfaces entirely.

      • Ah bugger. Yes we replaced the felt pad underneath the wheel however it immediately tore when we had another go at pulling it apart to clean it. It's $20 delivered from Breville and the machine wasn't performing any better with after we replaced it, so I hesitate to buy a new one.

      • Here's some photos I just took of the grinder if you're willing to take a look.

It also looks like my family threw out the ripped felt pad - I'll need to order a new one if it'll be causing damage.
Nevermind - I didn't disassemble the grinder far enough to see the felt washer.

        • Looking at the cutting edges of the lower burr they definitely look like they’ve seen better days. They should ideally be uniform in their edges, like a knife. I see a lot of ‘nicks’ which would give it the precision of a serrated knife instead of a pair of scissors.

Re felt ring - this YouTube short demonstrates where that felt pad is. If that got lost in the rebuild there will be a huge amount of grounds in that negative space. Oily grounds can compact and solidify, and that might be working against the auger underneath the lower burr.
          https://youtube.com/shorts/TqqNrkZvSE0?si=Sj4_MltPUJhXU5ou

          • @yojabbajabba: Thanks @yojabbajabba, I think you're exactly right. I have looked up replacement burrs and mine are definitely worn down.
I also got to the felt washer and it's still there, but it is definitely ripped. I ordered some new ones from Amazon this time, 6 for like $16 with good reviews.

Knowing the burrs are likely what's causing the problem I will look into a replacement.

Thanks so much for your help.

    • The newer Breville grinders should be the Baratzas or equivalent to the base level Baratza Encore ESP. That said when looking on the website, on the Breville Barista Pro, it specifically calls out the brand, whereas the Breville barista pro has a different image and just says 'precision'.

I'm happy with my BBP built in grinder.

      • I have been happy with it too. I wouldn't be considering a different grinder if it hadn't gotten damaged.
I know it has inconsistent grind sizes but it hasn't been an issue for us - I even made a 3D printed WDT tool and used it for a while but it didn’t make a difference that I could tell.

        • I swear the WDT tools are just things youtubers tell you to do to 'get a better coffee', but then whens the last time you've seen any barista at a coffee shop used one? The answer is never.

          • @ATangk: 💯 it was fun to print and assemble though.

            • @theguyrules: Don't get me wrong I still use it 100% everytime, but its more to spread out the grinds evenly as they always pile on one side from the grinder. I didn't print my own just bought a cheap one off temu, its magnetic so sticks to the side of my machine.

              • @ATangk: I made this one I've made it a couple of times for mate too. It is satisfying to use (and build, like I said).

                • @theguyrules: Oh that wasn't what I was thinking. Looks good, but the 54mm basket usually means the grinds are higher than the portafilter lip, so I've had similar designed ones just spill all the coffee everywhere. Do you have this issue with these?

                  • @ATangk: When I was using the tool, I sometimes had to use a finger to move the grinds closer to the center before putting this one on. Then I used a distributer after the WDT tool. FWIW with my 54mm double basket I use 18g of beans, which doesn't overflow much at all. My dosing funnel helps keep them in

                  • @ATangk: Use a dosing funnel to stop the beans spilling everywhere

                    • @cooni: Dosing funnel stops the grounds coming out of the grinder from falling off, but to use the spinny WDT thing, my one pushes the grinds out and over the side of the tool, so it’s not very convenient. I just use a hand one to level the grinds now rather than actually wdt’ing the whole thing. I also heard that using a dosing cup then inverting and shaking is actually preferable, too.

  • Thanks OP. Where does this ship from and does it come with an AU plug? Has anyone bought from this seller before and can share their experience?

  • Had one of these for a year, loved it.

No issues. Very minor static retention. Great coffee.

  • I’ve bought from this seller before, my grinder came with an AU plug. Personally I wouldn’t recommend this seller. I had some minor cosmetic issues with my grinder and while they offered to send a replacement part, it wasn’t without an inflated shipping price which they wanted me to pay… I’m talking $30USD for a part that weighed a few grams. They seemed pretty reluctant to budge, so I question their ability to provide decent after sales support on more serious issues.

Obviously if the price is good and you’re happy to roll the dice, then go for it, but my preference would be to buy local next time.

  • Definitely don't recommend this seller. Very painful to deal with.

  • Is the noise as bad as all the reviews make it out to be?

    • Not for me. It sounds like a coffee grinder. Not unusually loud. It goes for 20-30 seconds. Not painful at all.

  • They just released DF60 in China, and DF54 is discontinued

    • I always wonder how they justify marking up the price that much lol

  • I've got a Mazzer that I like to use for espresso, would this be a good, secondary grinder for my filter roasts?

  • Are these a downgrade from df64? I have a 64v2 on the bench for espresso but I want to swap burrs and use it for filter. Would the df54 be a noticeable downgrade I wonder?

    • Less radius (64 vs 54) = less surface area = slower grind time for the same volume of beans.

  • Worth to upgrade from smart grinder pro ?

    • Absolutely, but it depends on how into your coffee you are and understanding flat versus conical burr grinders better.

Something like the SGP is "more forgiving", in that if you don't dial it into the right window, you still are likely to get a decent cup of coffee because the grind consistency is so inconsistent. By grinding half of your dose smaller and the other half bigger than you intended, you'll mix and match and it sort of levels out to "decent". You can never dial it in really tight to a great cup of coffee, though.

The DF54, if you get it wrong, you will get a bad cup. The window to get it "right" is smaller, but not hard to experiment and find. When you get it right, you elevate your cup to levels the SGP could never reach.

    • Absolutely. I sold my smart grinder on marketplace a few months into using it with my Bambino Plus to buy the DF54.
Very clear difference in clarity and overall user experience. If you can get behind single dosing/weighing out your beans then it's absolutely a steal at this price.
Haven't had any issues at all.

      • How much did you get for it on FB Marketplace?

        • around $185 I think - got it pretty cheap on sale from memory

  • I have a bambino plus and the Baratza Encore ESP is a very popular grinder pairing. For the price it gets a pretty good result.

    https://amzn.asia/d/099o5bTd

  • Their customer support is pathetic as they make high volume sales. At that, point after-sale focus is completely insignificant to them.

  • Looks great, but reviews are mixed. Fellow Opus grinder is better at this price point.

    • Anybody else want to weigh in on the Fellow Opus?

$299 including shipping for a white one …
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Fellow-Opus-Conical-Coffee-Grinder…

      • Bought my Fellow Opus for 324 shipped in November 2024 - to this day still going strong. Grind at least 2 times a day.

Note when grinding, I do tap on the side and the top to reduce prevent grind build up in the burrs. I do this so every dose is consistent and I get all grinds out.

Things to note - the anti-static does work, it reduces amount of grind in the work area, but i do use a spritz of water to help further reduce any static. The dosing cup is 100% useful and matchs my portafilter so workflow is clean. Cleaned the blades once in the 2 years with the rice grain trick, otherwise mine had the included diamond burr blades, so just general maintenance with brush and making sure grind doesnt clog up.

The adjustments are very well covered with both base dial and incremental dial. Have doen pour overs, espresso and vina coffees. I use a masking tape and mark my spots for grinds positions

10 years as a barista, used manual grinders, and plenty of mazzers. The fellow opus for home use is exceptional. Yet to see if breville and home brands can deliver value for sub $200.

        • Wow, that's an impressive review!! Thanks!!

  • A budget option to look at is Hibrew G5, can be had < $200

  • Anyone have experience with the grinders on Alibaba - from places like this https://cnqika.en.alibaba.com/productlist-1.html?filter=null…

  • Does anyone know which version this is? Miicoffee has version 1.4 which has a larger chute, with 1.2 and 1.3 having improvements to the clumping issue and ionizer location. They also have it at $326 AUD but shipping kills it at $97.

  • This or Eureka Mignon zero for $528 delivered from espressocoffeeshop

    • If you can. Mignon. Had it for two years, very quiet.

  • Recently upgraded the burrs on the big brother, SSP Cast LSRS, anyone using this combo?

  • Does anyone know if this is the same as Turin DF54 V4

    • I would recommend get it from a local supplier. Auspresso based in Sydney and clearly states their's is V4. I read somewhere DF64.com was a bit hit and miss and customer support was not good.

  • Comment score below threshold.

  • Paid $430 for this in 2024 and use it daily with my breville dual boiler, no complaints here. Glad decent entry level grinders are getting cheaper.

  • This is no Mazzer. Must be pretty inconsistent grinds one would imagine.

  • 0 after sales support, pay more, buy local and you will have ACL on your side. They don’t even answer emails. Can we please take action against this store (and every store that ships to AU without the warranty?)
