[QLD] Weekly Free Community Dinner at Guyatt Park @ Michael Berkman MP

960

According to the organiser there is a free community dinner every week and anyone is welcome.

The organiser is a Greens MP but they said nothing political is discussed unless you happen to bring it up yourself.

Throughout May we’re sharing Cosy Bowls, Bakes & Trays at Guyatt Park.

Think dahl, soups, stews, noodle bowls and rice bowls, alongside hearty pasta bakes, veggie bakes, lasagnes and potato bakes. These are the kinds of dishes made for sharing, perfect for cooler nights and big community tables.

      lol

To be honest I was in two minds about posting this because I was worried someone might go and ruin it for s**t and giggles and although it's not solely for people who are going through hardship, though I'm sure some people are going because they are going through hardship. Would hate to spoil it for them…

But the they said they wanted more people to come.

      • That's what happened with the Lentil As Anything restaurants where you could pay what you feel (or not pay at all).

Useful info: Kids + dogs welcome. Vegan and gluten‑free options.

        • +3

Wasn't it more because people didn't pay at all and they were just expecting more people to pay with Lentil?

          • @spb: I thought it was a mix of people not paying at all & those that paid not paying enough so they weren't covering their costs

            • +2

@Irishness: Yeah it seems to attract certain types of people who have no shame in pulling the piss.

I remember reading some chap would take multiple plates, even pack some home, and pay $0.50

            • @Irishness: Yeah, people showing up with the wrong intentions, taking advantage.

    No risotto?

How close is the neighbour's power point?

      I understood this reference

No such thing as a free lunch (dinner in this case)

    • What about breakfast

You have to join the club at Tiffany's.

But all the best things in life are free.

I actually went to university with Michael and remember him to be a really nice guy. So whatever your political affiliation is, I'm sure you can have a good chat with him. Nice meal as well.

    • +10

Yep, agree, Michael is a really nice guy. He was also a very responsive and helpful representative when I was living in the Maiwar electorate.

    • +3

He's definitely a good guy. He has survived as a greens rep for longer than most do also, so that's a good indicator

This is why true democracy will never be a thing.

It says vegan options available, implying both vegan and non-vegan.

      • +1

Abortions for some, miniature American flags for others.

    • +1

Don't let it become your identity dude or you can't scoff a bag of chips on its own.

    • +1

I hear that you can get meats from you local butcher. You should check it out

    • You don’t have to be vegan to eat food that doesn’t have meat in it.

Maybe if you want to pick the menu, you can pay for your own!

      • -3

Paul Murray came on so I got bored. Was waiting for my nightly dose of the honourable Andrew Bolt on after dark.

    • -4

The state that can't handle DST because adding and subtracting 1 is too hard.

      • +6

The further north you go the less point to DST there is. Typical Victorian in your little bubble.

Evidence against Daylight Saving Time (DST)
        Health & safety
        • Circadian disruption: Shifting clocks causes “social jet lag,” misaligning sleep with natural light and harming sleep quality.
        • Cardiovascular risks: Studies show up to a 29% increase in heart attacks after the spring shift; permanent standard time could modestly reduce obesity and stroke rates.
        • Accidents & safety: The spring transition is linked to about a 6% rise in fatal car crashes and increases in workplace accidents and medical errors.
        • Mental health: Disrupted sleep contributes to mood disorders, anxiety, and decreased cognitive function.
        Economic costs
        • Energy savings myth: Modern evidence indicates DST can raise energy use (more evening AC, darker mornings increasing artificial lighting).
        • Lost productivity: Biannual clock changes are estimated to cost around $1.7 billion annually in lost time/productivity in the U.S.
        • Healthcare burden: Sleep-related health losses can equal roughly 2% of GDP (e.g., ~\$9 billion annually in Queensland), offsetting evening-daylight benefits.
        • Market effects: Financial markets often show lower returns on the Monday after time changes, possibly due to trader sleep disruption.
        Scientific / medical position

Major medical and safety organizations (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Medical Association, National Safety Council) support ending seasonal clock changes and favor permanent standard time, which better aligns with human circadian rhythms and reduces morning-darkness harms.

Bottom line: Public-health, safety, and economic evidence favors abandoning seasonal DST in favor of permanent standard time.

and I can equally provide you scientific research that says move 2 hours forward in first year then +/-1 after
personally I don't care how it's done I'd just like some daylight in the evenings for sport like in other states

I wear these negs like a badge of honour. Thank you.

  • +6

Not sure if it’s all Greens MPs but definitely a few of them. Elizabeth Watson Brown does it as well. https://www.elizabethwatsonbrown.com/meals It’s run by volunteers and can confirm it’s free for everyone until the food runs out! Good community initiative.

    • For the community who can afford to live in St Lucia or its neighbouring suburb ? Or someone from the poorer suburbs ???

      • +3

St Lucia has a lot of students…even The Gap (where I live) has a decent number of less than well-off people.

I'm not defending that crooked old hag one bit but not all of her constituents are flush with cash.

  • -4

A fablous way for ageing, well to do, white folks to give back to the community after they made an absolute killing.

    • Laughs in home & IP ownership

      • Haha!
