A great price if you need to buy multiple. I'm renovating a home so will need to about 20 of these. Probably the best smart downlight for compatibility with Apple/Google Home.

Looks like Bunnings is price matching Amazon.

  • FWIW these aren’t as bright.

    • As bright as?

      • whites are okay

        colors are not bright tho.

        • yeah its only 8.5 watts so we are putting 12 of them in the kitchen/living area

          • @themedic: The image shows these need a dedicated plug. Do you have extension leads snaked around your roof or can these connect to a transformer?

            • @VerticallyIntegrated: If you dont have these sockets at your downlights get a sparky to install them. All downlights use standard plug sockets now.

          • @themedic: I have 9w cheapies and I have 12

            6 in lounge
            4 in dining
            2 in kitchen

Whole room is around 7m x 6.5m roughly. Cant imagine it being brighter than that. On a side note, I do have additional lighting in the two fans but don't use it. It was a happy accident that all areas have different numbers, because it means I have a lot of flexibility with just turning on and off different areas without having dimmers. Adding smart dimmers from AliExpress could cost anywhere from 10 to 25 bucks each, so cheaper than paying for these

    • Comparing to these ones or
      https://amzn.asia/d/0cyqguAZ

    • Lifx lights are amazingly bright and require no hub and work with HomeKit and Matter.

edit: looks llike latest Lifx lights are just as bright as these Philps ones

      • LIFX stuff is fantastic in my experience

The only downside is wifi not zigbee but their connectivity on wifi seems reliable from my several years of using LIFX stuff

Mind you, i dont think the Hue that are on special are zigbee anyway

        • The only downside is wifi not zigbee but their connectivity on wifi seems reliable from my several years of using LIFX stuff

I still have their first gen lights from 2015 and they are still rocksolid but they lack few of the best features from recent version. The biggest thing missing from my 2015 lights is that they don’t remember their last state, so after a blackout they turn back on at 100% brightness — ouch!

        • The Akari are definitely ZigBee.

        • All Hue lights are Zigbee, with some being capable of Bluetooth too. WiFi is fine until you have 100+ lights around your house, plus dimmer switches and sensors. That's where Hue lights+bridge truly shine and have no competition.

          • @Alx75: ah i didnt realise theyre all zigbee, i thought some were bluetooth only

Agree 100% about the connectivity with Zigbee, a lot of my gear is Zigbee and in terms of responsiveness and reliability it cant be beaten

I dont use Hue bridge though, I use homeassistant SkyConnect

If LIFX did Zigbee they would be THE brand, IMO - their lights are absolutely top notch

            • @Yakkus: my zigbee stuff lags like a dog with no back legs.

              • @Whiplash: Damn that sucks, my Tuya Wifi stuff is slower than Aliexpress delivery but my Zigbee (including Tuya Zigbee) stuff is snappier than my boss when I make perfectly reasonable requests.

  • BTW if you are okay with smart battens or E27 type bulbs in the ceiling they are way cheaper than these smart downlights.

    • There are so many smart battens and other branded bulbs out there, and so many have integration or other issues.

Hue is definitely more expensive but for Apple/Google home, Alexa, and home assistant, they just work. It’s been solid.

The labour will be around as expensive as the bulbs anyway (unless you already have plug bases) so my opinion is don’t underspend on the hardware and regret it later. Remove and reinstall is not cheap.

      • Remove and reinstall is not cheap.

aren't these just plug and play and fit the standard 90mm cutout holes in the ceiling and it can be easily done yourself?

        • Kind of.

If you're using these (which use plug bases) and you're replacing 90mm lights, and you don't have a lot of insulation to move around - it wouldn't be a fun job but you could do it.

If you set up a hardwired set without plug bases and connectivity, software, or performance is flaky - it'll be a lot more expensive.

        • Just beware they do not work on dimmer switches. Learned that the hard way

          • @ONEMariachi: did you have flashing lights? I had that and it seems older dimmer switch was not compatible with the new LED downlights, and installing a new dimmer switch may resolve that (flashing light).

What did you do to fix your issue?

            • @bheart: we just disconnected the dimmer. wasn't necessary anymore with the hues. and yeah the lights were flashing and the hub couldn't see them

  • Or just get smart wall switches if you don't care about colour (after 20 mins you won't.)

    • Agree that full RGB is of limited value in typical downlights but controllable CCT is asbolutely worth it in my opinion. I really don't like having a warm, low temp cast during the day when there's also some daylight spilling through the windows, but there's no way I'd put up with a cold white at night. Smartlights with CCT are the best way to address that.

FWIW I've also found these Akari downlights have way better dimming range than some cheaper generic smart downlights I tried previously.

  • How are these diff from aldi smart downlights. The price gap is way too high

    • It has Philips Hue brand name and boxes

    • ZigBee vs wifi, Philips vs non-name (probably tuya rebrand).
      Hue downlights are super reliable.

    • Also you need the hub I think…..Comments from people in the know…here..

    • How are these diff from aldi smart downlights. The price gap is way too high

These do have true color compared to those Aldi RGBW ones but given the price difference and how many you may need - I will not recommend Hue lights. The main advantage with these are that they work on hub not wifi, but if you have a smart router than can do separate IOT network then its not a big issue.

      • smart router than can do separate IOT network
I didn't know these existed. Do you use one?

        • I’ve used the tapo router to do it. It’s decent but the hie hub is more reliable

        • I didn't know these existed. Do you use one?

Most modern routers should have it - mine is Deco Mesh wifi 6 and I have dedicated IOT network which is 2.4ghz and apparently if someone hacks into it, they can't get into the main devices as it is isolated. I have over 50 wifi devices connected to the network and never had problem

      • Aldi's lights are actually pretty good. Mate cleared out 3 stores (wa gets limited stock). Color consistensy is good, but he runs a seperate cheap router to look after the all the automation on a seperate band.

        • Mate cleared out 3 stores (wa gets limited stock)

I hope they bring out more soon as I was only able to grab 4 in NSW, I need at least 20 more and its been almost an year since they were available as special buys.

  • Can only buy 5 even if you try to do separate orders.

    • I ordered through Bunnings so I could use my Onepass for free shipping and Flybuys. Jbhifi will also price match amazon.

      • Price matched with JB on their website, thanks OP

  • Does other smart downlight offer the wake up with fade duration like the Hue?

    • Yes, pretty much all of the newer smart lights support this now. I’ve got both LIFX and Aldi smart lights, and they both have the feature. The Aldi ones were only a fraction of the price compared to LIFX or Philips Hue.

  • Bunnings also offering the same price.

Price beat at Officeworks for further 5% off :)

  • I price matched with JB as they are giving a free hue bridge when you get 3 of them. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/philips-hue-colour-ambian…

    • I tried to get them to add the bridge but it didn't work for the free one online, but I'll end up getting another bridge or using my ConBee II

    • Offer ends 20 May 2026

    • Good deal, but not sure how you managed that.

Surely the price match for the lights, should have impacted the ability to get the the bonus item?

      • I was surprised they offered it as well but I just got my delivery of nine lights and three hue bridges so worked out well :)

    • Thanks, I did the same pricematch online with no difficulty and had the bonus device added to my order.

  • Does anyone know why Phillips Hue hasn't started supporting Matter / Thread?

    • They do now with their latest batch of lights. I suspect the discounts we're seeing these days is a flushing of the old stock

In Feb, I was able to get a bunch of their fancy lights significantly cheaper at Bunnings cause they were getting rid of them all.

To give you an idea, I believe the new Batten/Edison screw globes are on their 5~6th generation of improvements. I mean you can still plug in a 1st gen light and it works fine, but the latest gens bring in more controller options (Bluetooth, Matter), better energy efficiency, and better brighter colours.

  • JB have now lowered their price to $62, instead of $62.10, so you might be able to get bunnings to beat the price by 10%

  • Thanks OP, one of our old Garnea ones stopped working so this is good replacement.

Now need to find some deals on the Edison screw bulbs…

  • Thanks OP, bought 10! (From JB's match)
