Home Water Filtration

Hey everyone,

I'm looking at getting a whole-house water filtration system + reverse osmosis unit installed at my home in Melbourne and would love to hear from anyone who's already gone down this path.

I've been researching a few companies — AquaCo, Demand Filtration, Bright Water Filtration, and Great Water Filters Melbourne — but it's hard to know what the real-world experience is like beyond Google reviews.

A few things I'd love to know:
- Which company/system did you go with and why?
- How was the installation process?
- Have you noticed a difference in water quality (taste, skin, hair, appliances)?
- Any issues with filter cartridge costs or availability after installation?
- Anything you'd do differently?

Any experience with AquaCo specifically would be really helpful — their certifications look impressive but they're Perth-based so curious how Melbourne installs go.

Thanks in advance!

  • Don't we have some of the best quality water in the world? I'm no expert, a carbon filter on the kitchen tap maybe? but reverse osmosis on the whole house seems like overkill (and expensive)

    • They said whole-house and a reverse osmosis unit.
Typically whole-house is not RO, it's higher volume. RO units are typically in kitchens.

Don't we have some of the best quality water in the world?

      LOL
Tell that to the scum that builds up in the shower and kettle, and the smell of chlorine in the air over the bath.

  • Melbourne

Best water in the region^ and you want to filter it…. nice.

    • travel insurance providers AllClear have analysed almost 2,000 tap water-related posts on Reddit to uncover the locations across the world that have the best tasting tap water

      lol

    • Cue: How could Dan do this?!

  • Do a TDS test and then put a 3 inline filter system in and take the test again. The TDS test is the same read.
I wouldn't shower in RO water as it would be pretty expensive setup. Check your mains pressure if you're only getting around 30 psi you'd want to go a booster pump.
I started with a cheap Ebay setup and then probably spent 1.5 x more with add ons I didn't know I needed at the time.
Everyday I'm glad I've got a RO system

  • I know someone with a whole home RO system and their water and shower seems just as good or bad as mine without any system. They also believe 5G causes cancer though so I think it has psychological placebo benefits for them.

  • I've had one installed in Perth for 2 years and love it.
Xsential Frontier whole house 3 stage system
Plumber friend installed, pretty easy process as it was fitted on the wall right where the mains water enters the house.
Water now tastes like it should (no taste), shower glass has less scale, missus says her hair and skin is better, no regrats at all.
Filter costs are $530rrp per year, easy DIY swap over. The mud and garbage on the filters when you change them is insane!
Wish I did it years ago instead of boiling the kettle for drinking water 3 times a day.

    • Mate, Xsential Frontier does not remove bacteria from your water, you still need to boil the kettle. It only removes sediment/scale from your water through filtration. It does not affect bacteria…

      • Still trying to find where I mentioned bacteria….

        • Why were you boiling the water 3 times a day then? Boiling doesn't remove sediment.

          • @tenpercent: Because it tasted terrible if I just drank from the tap.
Boiled then chilled water had no taste. (Pre filter install)
My now filtered water from the tap has no taste.
            Im happy.

        • Well, I mean that's why people boil water. To kill the bacteria.

If you put "why people boil water" in Google search, that's exactly what it is going to tell you.

          • @verio: Hahaha ok, good one.
My search said to make a cup of tea and fill the hot water bottle.

  • I bet all the talk about Microplastics got inside OP's head….

  • Is this about fluoride?

  • Had a three stage filter system installed.
    Few issues
    1. They put the unit on the wall right behind my bedhead - so whenever water is turned on in the house, I hear it.
    2. The contract includes replacement stage 1 filters but not the other stages - you need to sign for that seperately and its not cheap
    3. It does reduce water pressure in the house.
Thinking back on it we probably should have just gotten an underbench RO unit for the kitchen.
We don't really need to filter shower/toilet/washing water.

  • Few people love to spend thier money and few want to sell.

Once i was told by Amway guy that we dont get enough vitamines in our food and he was pushing me to buy more then a dozen different bottles for various vitamin.
