  • I bought 4 bottles of the vodka last time as I was looking for some cheap mixer to go in my Ninja Slushie. As a mixer there were no complaints, and I doubt anyone is deluding themselves into thinking that this is something that you'd enjoy drinking straight.

A 1.25l bottle of Solo (or your choice of soft drink) + 250ml of Vodka gives a really nice 6.7% abv slushie … :)

    • I actually quite enjoy the vodka neat. More than Smirnoff at least.

      • Grey Goose skewed peoples view of vodka, they marketed a cheap vodka as a "premium" product and people fell for it and now people think spending more on vodka means its going to be better, when all you are doing is spending more to make you feel like you have something better.

        • Most vodkas aren't even pure, but flavoured. Distillers can add up to 1 gram/L of citric acid, or up to 2g/L of glucose syrup to change the flavour profile and still call it vodka.

  • Have been enjoying all the Gins with Tonic since last deal. $29 is a steal and have re-stocked!

    • Any of them have a similar taste to roku gin?

  • Does anyone know how this company appears on bank statement? I can swear I bought gin off them a while ago but never received it. Can't find the transaction

    • "SP ARTISAN GIN SCHOOL BIRTINYA QLD"

    • Off the top of my head these guys have been Brisbane Distillery, Red Queen Distillery, Queensland Distillery, and now Artisan Gin Co. And they also do Captain Moreton Spiced Rum, and have had spirit making classes under about 3 different names

Got to be something dodgy happening there, it's the same people running it and changing the name every couple of years

Edit - Yep, there it is - https://www.skynews.com.au/business/gin-distillery-run-by-ex…

      • Smart Man - Interesting to hear this - I was wondering how they managed to dodge the tax a little bit, as at this price its the taxes + a small margin

        • This price is below tax by my calculations, the excise should be $32.94 for the vodka, plus GST

          • @Dyl: All distilleries are allowed to sell a limited amount of excise-free spirits every year

      • There is some sort of alcohol tax break if the turnover of the company is under a certain $.

So if this was a big company, the tax per bottle would basically be more than the price they are selling it for and they would lose money. If it's a small company which '""goes bankrupt"" when it reaches the cap, the bottle probably costs them $3 to produce with $0 tax.

        • No need to go bankrupt. Just stop selling for the rest of the year, and next year there's a new tax free allowance. Keep cycling a few companies and play the system year round.

  • Grabbed a few vodka and 2 of the dry gin - hopefully its good… enough for $29 a bottle!

  • Nice deal on some poison

    • Everything is poison in some way.

      • So why aren't cigarette deals allowed then?

        • It would fall under advertisement I would imagine, which is a big no no in Aus.

        • Wait! Wait! So you think cigarettes being poisonous makes everything else not poisonous?…. Ok?

          • @SarcasticEmu: No, not what I'm saying. What you're saying is that even though alcohol is a poison, it's fine because "basically everything is poison". So, my counter point is - then why are cigarette deals not allowed, considering that (according to you), advertising poison is fine? There's a reason why cigarette advertising is illegal.

            • @MrZ: What?

You’re completely putting words in my mouth. I never said advertising poison is fine, nor did I say alcohol isn't harmful.

I said everything is poison in some way, which is a literal scientific fact.

If your entire logic for banning a deal is "this substance can be a poison," then we'd have to ban ads for half the products on earth.

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world, yet FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) has the highest advertising expenditure globally, especially fast food.

So what the hell is your point?

  • Bought 1 vodka and all the gins last sale.

I will say they are cheap for a reason.

    • What did you think of the gins? any standouts?
I did the same and got one with the lot but no vodka.

  • Wonder how they are they selling these lower than the cost of the tax if they are 40% abv

  • It does the job but don't expect it to taste great.

You can also get $24 bottles of gin from qstill.com with the code RUNOUT. Not sure what delivery is.

    • Interestingly qstill's pre-discount prices and shipping are the same as Artisan Gin. Website look & feel also matches. Not to mention the bottles and stoppers.

  • 2x QLD dry for me. Thanks OP. I am having one right now! Cheers

  • After the article on counterfeit alcohol I wonder if this is completely safe for human consumption.
Also after buying and drinking several bottles…

    • Thinking the same, but it's so cheap…

    • Id be surprised if this is anything but ethanol and vodka/gin essences added. The guy doesn't scream ethical.

      • Anyway to tell for the average punter at home?

        • Being an average punter at home too, I asked ai. No magic bullet but a few things you can try.

    • Same here, not sure they meet all the standards when producing them this cheap…

      • Ozbarginers havn't reported any issues, and I think if it is produced in AU. It should work out well as it is a public facing distillery.

      • Its only cheap because there is no excise on the product, its actually quite expensive for a D2C sales with no excise

  • Ok. i have absolutely no clue how in the hell they can get vodka that cheap…

spirits are taxed at 105.98 a litre of alcohol.

Every bottle they sell they are 7.5$ in the red BEFORE GST.

edit: its does appear there is an entire rabbit hole of manufacture rebates i was unaware off.
I swear i keep hearing more and more stupid things about AU liquor law.

    • Another one of Morrison’s ingenious moves. Set up a small distillery, use the $350k cap, then open another one, rinse and repeat

The excise is not charged on small manufacturers , most do not pass on the benefit .. these dudes do .. Anyways most Vodkas except for a few are sugar based , created from the same base alcohol 95-98% proof sold to most major manufacturers who then create their gins from it or distill it once more to ensure no foreshots or methanol makes it to the end product, add some fancy packaging and sell it . These dudes do the same but they do not charge the mega bucks some do. The catch is unlike the big guys, they cannot sell beyond the limit set by the govt. I have made the same stuff for 4 dollars a 700ml 40% bottle but only 6 bottles after monitoring a still for 8 hours ..that should give you an idea of what is involved and how it works…

      • $36.23 is the tax on a bottle of 40% vodka, and there’s cheap brands for like $40-$45 out there.

If it can retail for under $4 profit one could assume they’re making it for literal cents, once you factor in packaging, equipment and logistics.

        • Yep … you got that right

        • Yeah, there's a bottle at liqourland that's $39, crazy.

  • ordered 2
    vodka and Queensland Gin
    Thank you OP

  • Bulk ethanol base?

    Small "distillery" excise incentive?

  • $15 delivery scales up unit price quite a bit, works out to be 123 for 4 bottles of 700ml, 30 per bottle
coles 20% off plus member discount gets you 1L whisky at about 50 a pop

    • The coles straights are 37% abv im pretty sure

    • Bought 12 to get it down to $26.25 a bottle lol

Likely going to regret it after the first taste test…

  • Brought 4 bottles and thanks

  • 3 bottles of vodka and 2 bottles of gin for $148 delivered.

    Can't complain.

  • any one taste this before ? good bad or average

  • I didn't mind the vodka from last time, wasn't bad at all for the price, perfect for mixing.

    • Any after taste when mixed pretty strong?

  • I grabbed a recent deal of the vodka, it worked out to be 23.60 each delivered for 9 bottles which is crazy. It gives a decent hangover if you give it a nudge.

    • Probably the tails they mixed in causing the hangover, or a bit of methanol…

If you drink enough fluids vodka shouldn’t usually cause hangovers, it’s usually only dehydration

  • Ordered a vodka and queensland gin last time. Vodka was great, i wasn't a huge fan of the gin but it wasn't terrible. Good value

    • It's definately a distinctive flavour with the native ingredients. I preferred the Australis.

  • Thanks OP, grabbed a couple of bottles of the vodka and gin. At this price for something Australian made, it's a no brainer to stock up and support a local business at the same time.

  • Interested to know how you’re selling vodka for $25 when there’s $32.94 + GST tax to be collected on it…

    • Read some of the links above, but basically small companies under a certain size get an alcohol tax exemption. So the cost of this rocket fuel is probably $3 to produce instead of $33.

      • Yeah just seen those now

Knew the cost of producing it was low, but the tax comes to like $36 including GST… So those $40-45 bottles are making only a couple of dollars.

        • Yeah it's cheap as man, if you've ever been to America (or other parts of the world), you realise just how cheap Alcohol and Tobacco are to produce.

Ours are taxed very highly, when I was in San Fran in 2016, 1.7L bottles of Vodka were like $15-20 usd for cheap brands like Smirnoff in supermarkets.

          • @Annoying Source: Yeah been to America, about $5 USD for a Smirnoff even, compared to like $60-70 here lately

Not even just the tax is less, the profit margin is too

  • got my confirmation email! thanks Op!

  • thanks got some vodka and a bottle of gin for the bar.

  • Gin is $89?

    • Use the coupon

  • Bought the Queensland gin last time, got 2 more bottles this time round - an absolutely delightful tipple, highly recommend

How that translations to Australia wide online sales: I have no idea :)

  • My vodka just arrived. Well packaged, tastes nice!

Nice label, pity it doesn't peel off the bottle without residue. The brown bottle looks great!

    • bucket, hot water, vinegar + baking soda. Let it soak and it will peel off easy.

      • Doesn't the vinegar acid and baking soda base, neutralise each other out?

        • Yep. Surprisingly still works. It seems you can skip the baking soda and still get the same result.

  • The Australis gin is a bit unusual, would try another next time.

  • Absolutely amazing vodka, very smooth and no after taste. Was pleasantly surprised, ordered even more.

  • I… I may have ordered some* booze…

  • Thanks Op, Just ordered the 4 different gins.
