NBN Churning Newbie

My special promo is expiring on 25th August with Tangerine. I have the 500 speed nbn.
What is the typical date you want to want to set to start with new provider and also when do you cancel with tangerine to minimize disruption

  • What is the typical date you want to want to set to start with new provider

Depends how much you like living on the edge. I schedule the new service to begin the following day so I'm not paying twice for the same day. Check what time of the day to expect the new service to begin. If there is any gap in NBN connection I just use my phone as a hotspot.
Some people schedule with an overlap, but that seems wasteful.

and also when do you cancel with tangerine to minimize disruption

Confirm that 25th August is the last day of the billing cycle and schedule the cancellation with them. Get them to confirm in writing that the cancellation has been scheduled and that you will not be billed for any service past that day. Ask them to confirm what time of day the service will end (ideally you want it to end at 1 second before midnight). Screenshot the convo in case you need to chase up a refund if they do bill you for another month.

    • A ten percent chance it doesn’t align perfectly ?

    • Thanks. So should reach out to them in July ?

      • Once you find whatever you're going to switch to.

        • Thanks.

          • @bin555: One more thing. Check if Tangerine has any notice periods. Some NBN providers 'require' 30 days notice, for example. While technically they can't charge you for service past the last day they supply it, it's just easier to inform them within in their timeframes and avoid disputes.

  • Be aware when churning that many providers require 28 days notice before cancellation

    • If you happen to give them less notice and they say they will or do charge you for another month of service which isn't supplied then threaten to involve TIO.

      • if it is in the terms and conditions you signed up to, TIO isn't going to give you the time of day.

        • Feel free to pay up or not request it to be refunded. I've always had them back down when I mention ACL and TIO. ACL trumps T&Cs.

The notice period requirement can and should be challenged on the basis of it being unfair and arguably unlawful, because by law, they cannot charge you for a service they know they cannot provide. Once you've churned it's impossible for the losing provider to provide you with a service. https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/buying-products-and-servic…

  • @bin555 Change to the new nbn provider a couple days before your Tangerine deal ends. You'll get an email saying your Tangerine nbn has been cancelled.

Some nbn providers allow you to schedule a transfer date in advance during signup. Otherwise your nbn will be transferred to the new nbn provider as soon as possible. Most transfers happen in under 1 hour.

Give the nbn AVC ID from Tangerine to your new nbn provider during signup. How do I find my nbn AVC ID?.

    • i see. Thanks.
I suppose mainly need to check tangerine's requirement on notice for cancellation. New ones look quick to transfer

      • Tangerine don't have any notice periods.

        • Thanks. I have been waiting for them to reply :).

So you cut it anytime and will they issue refund for unused feature or you just forfeit the remaining days

          • @bin555: Tangerine don't give you a refund for the unused days.

Some nbn providers do give you a pro-rata refund if you cancel before your billing date.

  • I'm looking to go to tangerine as my term with southern phone ends , how are they (tangerine) these days ❓

    • No issues at all. About to complete 1 year soon

    • I'm with More Telecom which is the sister brand of Tangerie.

This morning my service with More migrated its wholesale internet services from Vocus to Aussie Broadband

I'm unsure if this is a good or bad thing. I'm just a standard user of the internet so I doubt it would be better or worse for me.

    • @Murkymerv
Same, I signed up with Southern Phone in June 2025 on the honeymoon offer with a "free" TP-Link VX230v modem.
I called them to ask for a deal to stay with them but they had nothing to offer.
I'm also looking at Tangerine but need to ensure that the TP-Link modem isn't locked to Southern Phone.

  • You can't 'churn' NBN…

  • dont waste your time

  • @welcomeUniverseWorld any advises for our friend?

  • Tangerine ended up giving me extra 12 months on the BUPA offer of $20 off. So, i guess i have another 12 months to go now.
Hopefully internet prices have come down by then where $60-$70 is the norm for 500mbps plan.
