Love cast iron and even moreso, carbon steel.

So when I say with some authority, “do not touch the grill pan”, take it as read that you must never touch a grill pan.

This is really good, cheap gear - but grill pans of any description are red hot garbage…

That said, great deal. Thanks OP!

I have this grill pan. I hate it and rarely use it. Main problem is it doesn't apply heat evenly but it's also a pain in the arse to clean.

I also have the dutch oven and I also rarely used that, coz it's not big enough to cook meals for four in. But then I realised it was the perfect size to bake this bread recipe in, so if you want to try an easy bread recipe give this a whirl - https://www.recipetineats.com/easy-yeast-bread-recipe-no-kne…

      • This is exactly why I've been waiting for this round of special buys. I jumped on the covid bread baking train pretty late and have been relying on the steam method. Keen to try it with a proper dutch oven now.

I bought a Crofton smallish Dutch Oven a few years ago, and it's awesome. We use it regularly when the old big one is too big, and it's great to have the option.

But I agree, never go near a grill pan.

  • +1

My old crofton has started turning black on the bottom

    • same. it started wearing through the enamel several years ago, and recently i got a pock mark all the way through to the iron. Probably still usable. But this is over 10 years or so.

You guys are nuts, you can't go wrong with a grill pan for steak.

Totally changes the flavour. And the grill lines….

    Restaurant quality steak at home.

I rarely buy steak at restaurants now as my wife's steak is as good or better than your average restaurant.

Pretty sure I just got this one:

    https://www.harrisscarfe.com.au/en-au/p/smith-nobel-raw-26-c…

It's a specialist price of equipment, for slabs of meat you want to grill

If you like the flavour from grill lines imagine if the entire outside of the steak was like that

    • +1

people these days somehow think new line is the way to end a sentence…

    • +2

So you rate a grill pan for steak even though your wife does the cooking?

I used both a cast iron pan and a grill pan for steaks. You get a better aesthetic on a grill pan I’ll give it that.

Cast iron is way better to cook them on though. Where the regular pan really shines over a grill pan is the ease you can do a butter baste to finish off the steak. Not gone back to a grill pan since using a cast iron pan.

A proper stainless pan is even better.

  • I could be wrong but i thought i saw cast iron cookware in Perth earlier when i went to my local Aldi this arvo

  • Is that bread oven extremely small? Can any of the others be used well for baking a Sunday loaf?

    • Get the dutch oven if baking for a family of 3 or 4. The bread one is small. I have both.

  • I use the Aldi Dutch oven to cook my sourdough bread in. Works a treat. Also have the French pan which I use all the time for curries, spag bol, stuff like that.

  • Grill pan is good for steaks but it's too expensive to cook thesedays. The wife and I need the big rib eye, one each and that's about $50-60 alone.
Maybe nice as a once or twice a year treat. Tastes better than the fancy restaurants if you go for the expensive cuts.

Dutch ovens are good, use them until they get destroyed and buy another. Cheap enough not to care so much.

So le crushet is ripping people

  • I used the grill pan on induction stove, full heat setting. The pan cracked in half, due to rapid heat I guess.

    • Gonna happen to anything if you don't bring it to temp at a reasonable rate using induction

  • +1

How does the frypan perform? Tempted to buy one.

  • Anyone have real world experience with these on an induction cooktop?

    • +2

Cast iron on induction is excellent! These are no different

We go thru the Aldi dutch ovens - wear out from being used multiple times a week the dish washed. The final year used for popcorn, then they are a water dish outside for the chickens.

    • +1

Wait, are you putting them in the dishwasher? Hand washing should make them last way longer

      • +7

Absolutely. Chickens will not last very long in the dishwasher…

    • +2

Hahahahahahahahaha you put cast iron in the dishwasher?

  • +1

I would rather have a non enamelled cast iron pan any day of the week..aldi had a really nice deep one not too long ago, I was waiting for them to drop in price but they sold out

  • I am surprised to see accounts of cast iron cooking items being worn out. I thought cast iron was a purchase for life?

    • It is, no idea what these people are doing to destroy them

      • +1

Put them in the dishwasher apparently…

    • +1

Enameled cast iron isn’t as indestructible as plain. So if you approach it with the same recklessness you can with regular cast iron you can chip or otherwise damage that enamel.

    • I guess the enamel can wear out?

  • What's with the dutch oven being more or less the same price (+4%) since COVID but the french pan is +40%?

    • -1

      ‘Euro’ tax

  • +1

Is there a reason why they put a layer of enamel on these? Is it because the grade of cast iron requires it?
Otherwise it would make sense to at least provide a variant with enamel on it. Especially consider the Choice review about the colour deteriorating to the point that it loses most of the original visual appeal.

    • Helps prevent rust and make it easier to clean and maintain. Dishwasher destroys it but you'll still get 3-5yrs out of it I reckon.
I hand wash my massive Le Cruset but chuck the Aldi beater in the dishwasher

      • I'd say much easier to clean depending on what you're cooking. Also, cooking certain foods can actually wear away the seasoning layer on plain cast iron. A prime example is a tomato-sauce based things, which are acidic. Simmering that for a long time is not good for plain cast iron, but works great with enamelled. So things like stews and soups are probably better in enamelled dutch ovens.

  • There's nothing on the packaging that I could see that indicates the products are in fact enamelled cast iron, not plain cast iron. Not a fan of these. Staub all the way.

    • "I don't like these Hyundais, only Ferrari for me"

      🙄
