Costco have a bulk 4.54 kg bag for $7.99. Got a pack the other day. Quite hard compared to Uncle Toby's but our family likes them. Hopefully they keep stocking them. Obviously a lot cheaper than some other options.

    Blue Lake Milling Rolled Oats

    • that is good value

    • +3

Best price at supermarkets is Coles 1.8kg for $3.50 ($1.94/kg vs $1.76 at Costco) - of course doesn't incur membership fee and much cheaper if you can stack spend $50x4 get $50. I usually buy a couple of bags and am down to my last; luckily there are 4 week shop incentives at the moment.

      • -3

Yep, woolies 750g for $1.60, or 1.6kg for $3.4. This is a joke
For the (profanity) sheep losing money on oats is a better deal than saving $hundreds of expensive items
        No wonder Pauline getting popular

Real bargain hunters get their oats in 20kg bags from agriculture supplies stores. If it's good enough for horses, it's good enough for me.

  • +2

Explains why you couldn’t get their standard rolled oats the last 2 weeks, they must have repackaged it into this.

  • +1

The bulk Costco oats weren't much chop in my opinion, quality were average at best.

Red Tractor seem to have a similar quality to Uncle Toby's.

  • +2

I'm no oat snob, I get Woolworths Quick Oats.

    • +3

Beware quick oats have a higher glycemic index and will raise your blood sugar levels faster than rolled oats. Rolled oats are better for health in most ways.

      • +2

Quick oats are for quick people. Rolled are better for sedentary people

        • +1

          Just keep on rollin' baby.

  • +7

Coles/Woolworths is half the price… Not sure why you'd pay double for this.

    • +2

^ follow this guy for financial advice

These oats are super creamy and soft. I don’t even cook them, just soak them in milk for 10 min while I have my coffee and then they’re good to go. I find them much better than other brands and happy to pay the premium

      • +1

These creamy style oats are the best I have had.

        • +1

          IYKYK
Everyone else is stuck eating basic oats

  • +2

shame that Aldi doesn't sell steel cut oats
    neither does Costco :(

forever forced to buy overpriced steel cut oats from Colesworth smh

  • +3

Geez, I swear I remember oats being about 60c or 90c for a 1kg bag not too many years ago. Fancy label or not, that is like 300% inflation in probably under 10 years.

  • +1

I am no oat snob. I usually buy the cheapest rolled oats.

But this Red Tractor Creamy style oats is the best. At this price I will definitely buy.

    Please try these once.

  • What's the closest to Uncle Toby's oats?

    • +1

      These are better

  • +2

I wish there were bulk deals for organic oats. so dumb that organic is sold in smalles bags (more waste)

    • +1

The oats amount is proportional to the bag size

      • no

        • Y

          • @Kongzi: do you have a different, personal definition to "proportional: ?

            • @ripprind: He might possibly be referring to the fact that it's not a linear relationship between surface area of a container and volume

              • @outlander: I think he is trying to claim that the relationship is linear.
"The oats amount is proportional to the bag size"

                I dont think so.

    • +1

just write organic on the bag

  • +1

So I just learnt some farmers spray round up on oats come sowing season. they do this to achieve an even and predictable drying of the crop so its ready to harvest when the farmers wants them to be.
But this all happen in a very short period of time, leaving the oats with round up residue on it, Glyphosate to be precise. Glyphosate is carcinogenic.

    • +1

The organic ones such as Macro Organic Rolled Oats 500g (https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/700524) would not have this issue right?

      • -1

all oats are organic. Its the one crop that doesnt need to be genetically modified as it grow all year round and dont really have problems with pests either

EDIT: I was incorrect. ogranic also implies they are farmed with no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers used. So if they follow the rules, then no, organic oats should not have this issue.

      • It's a risk you have to take

      • A 2018 study conducted by the Environmental Working Group measured the presence of glyphosate in a range of oat-based products. 45 were tested in total, including 16 organic oat food samples. Of those 16 organic oat options, five of them found detectable levels of glyphosate.

    • I hope you don't drink beer.

"Since barley is the most common grain used to make beer, and studies have detected glyphosate in the grain, it’s not surprising that the herbicide has also been found in beer. One study of 100 samples of beer found glyphosate residue in 92 of the samples."

    • +2

In Australia, it is illegal to use glyphosate and paraquat on oats for pre-harvest herbicide application (aka crop-topping where they spray crops with chemicals to kill weeds before harvest).

However, while illegal, Grain Industry Association of Western Australia raised the alarm on this, saying that there are farmers that use glyphosate for crop-topping but it wasn't widespread and it's likely individuals doing this (and if caught, there would be serious consequences, but against, that's IF caught).

    • +2

welp, time to switch to coco pops n fruit loops i guess

  • +5

A real ozbargainer would buy the animal grade feed and eat that
    https://bushsproduce.com.au/products/rothackers-feed-oats-25…

    • well considering glyphosate laced oats is considered "human grade", I see no difference between the two.

    • I did the same with Ivermectin back in 2021

  • I see this brand for sale in USA when I’m there.

    • you might be thinking of bob's red mill

      • +1

Nope definitely red tractor. Kroger sells it.

  • +3

Are you (profanity) kidding me? It's oat. (profanity) oat.

750g for $1.60, or 1.6kg for $3.4 for the less gifted

    • -1

      OP is getting rolled bruh

    • -2

Taste them once and see the difference. It's fine to spend on good quality food once in a while.

  • What happened with Aldi's standard 750g for circa $1.70?

Like this one (obviously quick cooking oats), but they had rolled oats too:

    https://www.aldi.com.au/product/goldenvale-quick-oats-750g-0…

  • Not sure how this is a deal?

What's so special about Red Tractor?

Standard rolled Oats at Woolworths is $2.10/kg:. https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/321220/woo…

These rolled oats are $4.05/kg, so almost double the price.

  • Nothing is special about these oats, I tried them, average at best. Not all oats are equal, the cheap ones from Woolies and Coles which people are mentioning are gritty and sometimes tasteless. Some of the best oats are organic ones from Finland, not easy to find here but taste and texture is worlds apart from the standard cheap oats.

Australia - Known globally for bright, clean & low-moisture oats with excellent milling yield & groat percentage. They are particularly prized in Asian markets for use in both traditional porridge & innovative foods like oat noodles. +avoid financing warmongering & traveling too long via the now unsafe straits (we can control ;)

    • Where in Australia do you find these good oats from Finland?

  • Costco has 4.54Kg bag of rolled oats for $7.99 (blue lake milling)
