Had an old rt-68u and found out it's end of life and a security risk!

Got two of these to setup in mesh at home - seems a great price.

  • Just looked up your router and its a WiFi 5 model so not really that old. Why have these become a security risk? Just because new firmware support has ended?

  • Yeh I may be paranoid but figured the router would be pretty compromised.. This seemed a good price?

    • I have it as well, from the T-Mobile rebrand deal. I flashed it to use merlin, but that's out of date too.

Seems like freshtomato is the go for custom firmwares now

I don't think it's paranoid. The internet is a lot more dangerous than it was 20 years ago. There are swarms of bots constantly checking for openings, and when they find one they use their libraries of known exploits to get in.

    • just update it to asuswrt-merlin if you're that worried. it's still a perfectly fine router.

      • nah, freshtomato. I just upgraded from merlin using the web interface, and it was pretty easy other than needing a reset to login.

latest freshtomato is April vs merlin which is 2 years out of date.

  • I'd expect it to have a few 2.5G ports at that price.

    • Maybe the GXE75 is more to your liking at $184.

    • Good pick up, although I thought it was the 2.5g port version… It's classed that at the the top of the page axe5400/2.5g….see what happens

    • For not much more than this deal, you can get the BE3600

Frankly, I'd wait for a special on the gl.inet Flint 2, it's the ozbargain favourite.

  • Vale the mighty ac68u, one of the legendary routers.
