SOHL Electric Standing Office Desk $189 @ ALDI

420

I'd like to get a motorised standing desk.
Saw this in the latest Aldi catalogue. Can anyone vouch for this? Perhaps from an earlier sale.

Prices went bonkers for these after Covid. Was hoping they might have come down a bit since then. Are the $500+ units really worth the extra $$$
This one only has a single motor. I'm also unsure about the lower cross bar and overall quality/stability.

Failing this… can anyone recommend a budget friendly motorised frame I could bolt a desktop to?

    120cm

    • Yeah. It's not huge. Was planing on minimising all the crap on my current desk.

        That's what she said

  • If you just want the cheapest option you can get one from Temu when there is 40% cash back and it should end up at just under $100. It's the same as any other cheap one except the desktop is two pieces (though you could replace it with anything). Single motor is quite slow but does the job if you're not changing too often.

    • Can't see where that single motor is placed under Aldi's desk. If it's in the middle (like at my office), I would be constantly banging by knee against it :-D
Dual motor eliminates this issue and they are not that expensive…
Also if you already have a desk, it's cheaper to buy a motorised frame and attach to the existing top.

I bought two cheap one (around $150ea) from a reseller selling things on gumtree back in 2022. Single motor. Surely it's much slower than my expensive Omnidesk but I don't care. For the difference in price, it's worth it to wait some extra seconds. Still using both of them

got this one recently - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CX53QXY8?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_f…

slightly bigger and cheaper and is pretty solid so far

    • Is the desktop one whole piece?
Anyone seen it go on sale at any time?

      • +2

It’s in 3 pieces. I have the smaller version 110x60, purchased for around 110 from their Ebay store. So yes it goes on sale.

      • +1

This particular one - the table top is in 3 pieces secured with metal braces to hold it together

    • THX, good find.
the white one is $30 more :’(

      • +2

But there is a coupon saving $39.80 that pops up

    • +1

Also - for anyone that decides to get this one & wants it on wheels.. the M8 threaded ones screw in perfectly to this

    • +1

Yep - We got this March when it was $199.00

      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0F2DTJM6S
      3 Pcs but works well.
      Specifically wanted the 140 x 70

      Will buy another.

    • is it steady

      • The amazon one I shared? - yeh it's steady. Even on 4 wheels (i lock them in place when not moving it around) , it's still very solid and steady

worth considering a electric riser on top of a normal desk? That what I did and havent looked back https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/ergolux-ez-pro-95cm-electric-he…

    • +2

That's such a chunky solution. Just about the only reason one would go with that is the need to move it around regularly.

      • +1

Nope - I have 2 massive screens, laptop in the middle and external keyboard and mouse on the bottom shelf. I have a gigantic desk that it sits on so dont have space issues.

I switch between standing and sitting multiple times a day. This is a great solution.

I got the ergomaker from eBay. This seems to be a single motor version. I got the dual motor version which I can’t see listed. Very happy with it

Amazing how sit-stand desk has become so mainstream, an entire desk with motor is approaching the price of a manual desktop riser (cheaper than in some cases).

    • It's because companies over produced these post covid thinking 'wfh' would be mainstream.

With AI, people are now scared shitless about their jobs and showing their faces in the office again and these companies have a LOT of stock.

  • I bought one from kogan a few days ago

    140cm x 60cm single motor rustic brown $119.21

$28.50 delivery to SE Melb so under $150. I have kogan first and used my credit (practically free)

    • Have you used it yet? Whats it like?

      • It's shipped, haven't received yet.

        • steady?

          • @dabaodedouzi: Yep, it's fairly steady, was easy to build with 2 people.

I didn't realise this from the pictures but it is black desk in the middle and rustic brown on the sides. Also it only has buttons for up/down, no memory/preset.

Others I've seen also have under desk basket for holding laptop power brick, or headphone hook built in and this has neither.

120cm is very small. I have one and I wished I got the 140cm version instead. It's too small to be practical

    • It would depend on the space available.
120cm is OK if you use a monitor arm and run paperless as well which many do these days.
In my WFH office set up I have a 160x70 desk with a dual arm for a big big monitor and laptop (acres of space).

But if for some reason another family member needs that desk I have an old Aldi 120x45 in the bedroom (not motorised) with a 22 inch display on a dual arm. It’s OK to use but it is sagging in the middle from the weight centred on the arm.

Looking at this motorised one I reckon that low bar under the desktop would be too annoying.

    • No doubt they would be better quality. But questionable whether they are worth 3-4x more.
I'm trying to get a better understanding of what to look for. Which features or components matter the most and where to spend my $$

    • +2

motor quality , desk/benchtop material, thickness, durability etc etc. but yeh it's questionable if it's 3-5x more

the one i ended up getting is only single motor, not 1 full piece for the top and memory setting only has 2 positions - but you know what, that was perfect for my needs :)

  • Been using a standing desk for about 2 years now and it's been great for my back. At $189 this ALDI one is pretty decent, but I've heard single-motor desks can struggle with heavier monitor setups. Anyone here had the previous ALDI version and can share how the motor held up?

  • Be mindful of the walking pad in the catalogue with this desk, looks tiny.

  • Can vouch for the Aldi manual version ($149). It’s lasted me over 2 years and I’d definitely recommend it

    • Wish I had that experience.

Ours wouldn't rise properly on one side from the word go apparently. It was put together by my wife and son and I've just had a quick look but it looks like the right leg is stuck fast.

Can't see anything obvious. Bought over a year ago and never got a warranty replacement LoL.

  • Can anyone recommend a sit stand desk that goes as low as 60cm height? I prefer having my table low.

Ideally a longer sized table as well (120cm+)

    • I've read that the better (more expensive) units go lower and typically have a larger range of movement.
      Standard is about 70cm-120cm.
I'd expect to pay at least double for one in the next tier.

  • My work from home set up is in an awkward space that I wanted to maximise space. My wife's is in a different room. Saw some dual motor frames on sale at Amazon. Ordered a piece of thick birch ply and had it cut to size by the supplier. Just had to round the edges over, give it a sand and a couple of coats of hardwax oil and had two custom sized dual motor standing desks fairly cheaply.. You could probably do it even cheaper if you got one of those pre-finished timber benchtops on sale from bunnings and cut it to size.

    • Sounds like the way to go. Can you link to the motorized frame you bought?

      • Don't have access to the account at the moment but they were Artiss branded frames - I didn't really do much research on them so not sure if they're the best value, but we've been happy with them thus far.
