Why Are You Sceptical of Bitcoin?

Bitcoin discussions often attract scepticism, and I’m interested in understanding why.

I’m not looking to argue or persuade anyone to buy Bitcoin—just to hear from those who are critical of it.

I’d especially like to hear from people who have researched Bitcoin and concluded it’s not a worthwhile investment or store of value.

If your opinion has changed over time, I’d also be interested in what influenced that shift.

Please keep the discussion respectful. I’m here to understand different viewpoints, not debate them.

  • Bitcoin is a solution to a problem that never existed.

  • Bitcoin is probably more reliable and valuable than most world currencies.

People should not let bias and ignorance cloud their judgement regarding bitcoin investment.

    Or sour grapes….

    • Reliable?
What if it has one of it's -30% swings after you sold your house for bitcoin?
You just lost a decade of money.

  • I personally have, physical assets, crypto, ETFs and shares.

I've read all the comments on this thread and my conclusion is that most of our OZB friends have little to no understanding of:

    • how fiscal system works
    • what makes something an asset
    • why an asset (regardless of what it is) is an asset

Just like my friends, the general conception seems to be that, I don't get it so it's a ….. (insert: scam/ponzi/speculation/etc)

I'm not going to debate Bitcoin vs ETFs vs houses vs Pokemon cards. What I want to say is that the lack of financial education is pretty obvious around here.

P.S. New topic: are Pokemon cards worthwhile investment?

    • It's ironic when someone tries to make the argument that others don't understand economics/finance as a justification to invest in crypto.

      Pseudofinance at its best.

      • Right.

        When was that?

    • Just for the record i didnt downvote you just but i do want to repond to this

      Pokemon cards worthwhile investment?

No they are a hobby and most of the valuable cards are from the 90s early 00s when pokemon was in its peak.

The issue with pokemon cards now is they pump out a new set every couple months.

In the orginal days of collecting the cards felt less like your gettibg scammed and more like your trying to build the entire set it was a pure hobby no one wanted to make money they wanted to play trade and collect.

These days the money is all that matters to nintendo and Pokemon and they pump out new sets and games with little to no passion and there are simply way to many pokemon that you cant collect them all as a regular kid

Maybe im just a nostalgic 90s kid but modern day pop culture is pretty shit

    • Yep, you are a genius economic mastermind, and everyone on here is uneducated.

Meanwhile, everyone I've ever known who trades in crypto does so to make money and THAT'S IT. No other purpose.

Meanwhile, thousands of people lose their life savings in crypto.

Meanwhile, it is full of scams.

Meanwhile, bots are trading crypto around the clock for the mega-wealthy. It's a constant upward trickle of wealth from normal people to the megawealthy.

Meanwhile, it is not actually secure, and bloody annoying to try to use it as an actual currency.

Meanwhile, it fails the basic functions of a currency: stability and usability.

Meanwhile, every second week there is another nonsense meme coin claiming to ….., and …..but in reality, it's just a scam, and they just want to suck your money.

      • Yes, I think very few people are actually financially educated.

Most if the assumptions have a basis in reality but it also applies to almost every other asset class.

  • Sadly I think it will go to zero, and CBDC will replace it. Which is not a good outcome.

    • Please make Bitcoin low again. :) Some of us, die hard hodlers, hope Bitcoin goes below $50K so we can buy it cheaper and hodl again.

      • die hard hodlers

from the person that sold all their crypto?

        • Yes. I am a die hard holder but to a limit. Everyone has their breaking point including your Saylor
