Keepsakes Storage Options - Just Get a Kmart Storage Tub or Invest in a Archive Box

Hi guys, I've got a bunch of "keepsakes" which I've got floating around here and there in the house and I wanted to store it properly in a storage box/tub.

This includes university degrees, birthday/anniversary cards, holiday photo memorabilia, some documents, etc.

Do I just put them in a storage tub from Kmart or get a good quality archive box e.g. https://www.archiveboxes.com.au/products/a3-archive-box-atta…

How are others doing this?

  • You can get these 50l ip67 waterproof storage boxes for $18 from Bunnings. I actually use them for 3d printer filament and just throw desiccant bags in there, could be good for archiving considering waterproof in case of flood. The clear design also good for seeing quickly what’s inside. I have a typed list printed laminated stuck on lid for organisation though. Someone here suggested to QR code it and have it linked to an excel that could be updated if you regularly add and remove stuff.

    • These bunnings ones are awesome, but it's 50/50 if they'll be in stock or a decent price. To follow JW's advice, put some silica kitty litter into a stocking to keep moisture low.

This is the 2nd model of these (old were orange clips and smokey plastic) which were deleted about a year ago but looked heaps better.

    • wow they look excellent!!!

    • I was about to buy two a few weeks ago for the same purpose before they went out of stock anywhere near me. Kmart have an anko equivalent (also IP67 rated) that seem to be doing the job at the moment. Still $18, so no cheaper, but easier to get a hold of (and free delivery with OnePass).

    • I wish I had a pool now. I can store stuff this way lol

  • Storage tub from Kmart is fine.

Best way to protect documents is to digitise them. Scan them, store multiple backups in multiple locations, know where you can get replacement copies quickly when needed.

Things like university degrees and other "official" documents are always replaceable - just sometimes expensive and inconvenient. Things like cards, holiday photos…etc. should be digitised.

  • Watch out for silverfish. I've seen old document collections literally eaten by these things. They love paper.

One way of discouraging them is storing documents in a low humidity environment.

  • Ikea boxes.

Those storage boxes would only make sense if you are only storing A4 and/or A3 documents. $25 is too much for a box IMO.

  • We bought some Kmart tubs for Christmas decorations, and even though they’re kept in the garage, found they all cracked. Around the same time we bought some from Officeworks, and they are fine

  • I would get a small fire resistant document safe for the important stuff like passports, birth certificates, uni degrees and you can shove whatever else in there too

    • and you can shove whatever else in there too

      Like your cat ?

      • Are you referring to the domestic pet or the emissions control device in your vehicle exhaust ?

  • On a slightly different note, we'll be looking to store most of our smaller household items and personal belongings in a storage shed for a year or so. What's the Ozbargain recommendation for container v box to store for longer periods?

  • Whatever you use make sure it is waterproof and is stored somewhere it doesn’t get light. You need to avoid fading and water damage. I also agree that digitising what is in the box is a good idea. It provides a record of what is there, easy access to look at them and less handling. You also might want to look into what paper to use to separate the documents from each other.

    • So I got negged with no idea what the coward objected to.

  • I just use a plastic a4 sized folder thingy, I wouldn't use anything water tight, or even close to it, as it won't be 100% dry inside the box (people have stored guns in watertight gun travel cases and come back years later to find them rusty) so just get a generic document box, or something like this if you don't have enough to justify a box.
