I wonder too. How they know if it is installed on any devices. But you have to activate the code stick with auto renewal on. I just did my claim using the receipt generated by trend with zero dollars on it. The only other receipt i have is the trend email delivery from bing lee.

No, i am on delivery, but i already got the trend email containing the activation code.
I got a digital delivery email for Trend Micro (from Bing Lee) which has the pin and serial number - it is also the Invoice for the product. (still awaiting processing of the phone for postal delivery.
If you want to maximise the likelihood of the cashback for Trend micro, I would ensure the product has been installed and activated - it is stated in the terms and conditions of the cashback ' …must be installed and activated….'
For software like this that has a serial/activation code you would usually find that the installation will ping back to the company's registrations server to record the install/activation and details.
I'm also going to use a 1 use revolut CC for payment details so they can't charge me for resub at the end of the year. Although their help does have instructions to cancel renew via logging in to your account
Activation is mandatory to go to the next step which is claiming cashback. However, I don't think actual installation matters once you activated it (and file automatically gets downloaded on the device).
