Speaking from someone who has 4 x 8TBs running about 4 years on with no health issues.

I've bought ~15 drives from EastDigital over the years. The website looks scary, but they're legit.
Have had 2 fail, contacted their support, sent them back and got 2 new ones back.Only downside to the warranty process though was it took a couple months, and I had to chase it up a couple times.
I always do a full write/read test on them before they go into the NAS.

I had one of my 16TB drives die recently, they swapped it out without any complaints but it did take like a month or a bit more.
Overall would buy again.

It was a refurb that died but wasn't the drives fault. I had a power surge that fried my PSU which in turn killed 3 drives. They replaced one that got fried. I have about 7 drives from them over the years, this is the only one that has failed so far.

@duk242 For the 2 drives that failed, did these fail on the full write/read test that you did before putting into NAS, or did the faults develop later on?

i've bought a couple as well, some just before hdd prices started going up. had one defective, they refused to replace it, citing that they are out of stock, while their website listed it in stock but like ~$80 more than what i bought at. would only give me a return and refund. seems their policy is very opportunistic.

Nothing wrong with East Digital (or their packaging), but a bit wary that datacentres over the last couple of years might have stretched out their drive life a little more than in the past due to costs. Would like to hear hours from those who have bought recently though.

but they can zero out the hours on firmware now… not saying THEY are doing it but whoever upstream could be doing it

Its likely the same, or very similar drive internals. Lets just say these things are good for 80k hours. This is 58% of the cost of the PLE drive so if they were getting shipped with over 40,000 hours (which is plausible given the mfg date) you'd long-term be better off with the WD Gold from PLE.

Oh man… this is heart breaking… I would love to get 2 more 16TB to create a second mirrored pool on my truenas server but this is over double what I paid for mine maybe 3 years ago :(

Would this be really loud? I have my NAS in my bedroom closet and I is loud enough with Ironwolf drives. I don't want it clattering away all night.

Way quieter than ironwolf drives when in use.
However, being WD Enterprise, they have the every 5s/10s 'thunk' as they flick the read heads to keep the grease distributed.
It's one of the reasons why they have such high life spans - but is an absolutely noticeable 'read bonk' every few seconds they're spun up.

You could live with it i think. WD drives have a low humm with an occasional "clunk".
A lot different to some of the Seagates that sound like jet engines taking off.

i got the cheapest 16T exo from them a deal way back for about 230$. didnt expect too much, but still going strong daily in my PC (not a nas), i know only one sample doesnt mean much, but at least it is real lol.

Having a look, ED also listing 14TB WD Ultrastar at a slightly better $/TB,
$496 for 18TB is about $27.5$aud/tb vs the 14tb they have listed at $255USD/$355AUD which comes to $25aud/tb

What is the difference between factory recertified and pulls? Is it worth paying the premium for recertified?

Factory Recertified means it's been checked by the drive manufacturer.
Pulls are just used drives from a server.
In practice, they're both much the same - the drive is either working or broken.

the problem is the SMART data on the Seagate drives can be easily wiped so you really can't trust any SMART data on the drives. FR drives may have been used then wiped again. East digital have previously been caught selling wiped drives as new.
