Maybe I’m just getting old but a good quality retractable hose reel is such an underrated QoL improvement purchase. I personally went with the Gardena 30m version at Bunnings though (only as I had gc to burn)

    • Do you have a recommendation for a good sprayer?
      Thanks

      • +1

Like hose head? I’m actually just using the standard one that came with the gardena sorry. It’s actually surprisingly good quality for an inclusion.

        • Yes, the hose head - something with multiple spray patterns.
I checked Bunnings' site. It seems all Gardena reels only come with a single function head.

      • I have had 2 of these bad boys for 3 years - they get abused, left in the sun, run over and they are still going strong compared to the countless other name brand garbage sprayers I have purchased that last about a 18months max before falling apart. Bunnings used to sell them but no doubt stopped stocking them because they seem to be a once in a life time purchase. https://tinyurl.com/449hwbww

        • Thanks. I haven't been able to find that in NSW.
However, Bunnings is selling these DeWALT ones, and they said the "brand" is Orbit. https://www.bunnings.com.au/dewalt-pro-thumb-control-8-patte…
          Not sure what that means.

          • +1

@Averell: They may have done a deal with DeWalt? The Orbits I have feel very heavy in the hand, so if the DeWalt ones feel much heavier than the other brands in stock I would give them a run.

I’m unsure whether to get the classic hose link or the Gardena

I have 2x hose link classics around the house already and find they have lower pressure than a standard hose

      How has the Gardena been?

      • Really good, I spend money on all these other random gadgets and tools and I have to say the hose and hose reel has been one of the most useful upgrades.

The misso has just got back into gardening (so I guess by extension I have also got back into gardening) - we’re using it twice a day now.

Regarding pressure not sure, pressure at the outdoor tap has always been good even with random cheapy 20m hoses from Bunnings. Prob because it’s near the laundry and hot water gas heater.

        • After reading reviews on Bunnings website they complain about the bracket and mounting hardware, but I suppose that’s only a small majority of the people that buy them.

          • +3

@jakeyo: I used dynabolts lol mounted it on a brick wall just near a high traffic area, it’s mounted a little higher than recommended I think, so didn’t want to chance shitty fasteners

The bonus of buying from Bunnings is you can just ball it up and return it if no good

            • +3

The bonus of buying from Bunnings is you can just ball it up and return it if no good

Definitely. Had a fault with our Hoselink reel and they had no interest in supporting an easy exchange. You basically need to drain the bastard and figure out a way to package it so that the courier or Aus Post will take it, before waiting weeks for their investigation and getting a new one. Major headache. At least with Bunnings you just drop it off and get a new one.

          • +1

@jakeyo: The mounting plugs are shockingly bad - had to buy some Ramplugs as I could pretty much pull it out of the bricks with the included ones.

The actual reel is amazing though - top plastic fades pretty quickly but that’s only a cosmetic thing.

          • +1

            @jakeyo: small minority you mean?

      • So it's not just me, the classic has terrible pressure, it doesn't even retract or pull out nicely. Is there any fix to getting more pressure? I already changed to my old trigger that was fine with my old hose, so it's not that!

  • The evolve range are expensive but having owned both I will say it does retract much more smoothly and reliably than the classic hose.

Whilst this seems to be a decent enough hose reel so far (had mine only a few months), for those unaware be mindful that it uses a particular hoselink fittings and if you want to use it with any other normal hose fittings ie. non-hoselink sprinkler, high pressure sprayer or anything else, you'll need to buy/fit adapters to them.

I see this reel as basically an apple product for the gardening sector. You're somewhat locked into their ecosystem and having to buy extra things as workarounds to use other 'normal' hose related equipment you'd buy anywhere else.

I've also got a Gardena which has been faultless for a few years now too.

    • +3

I dunno man the adapter is $8.07. Just throw one in with your $200 hose and it isn't an issue.

    • +3

After the dog chewed up the plastic hoselink fitting on the end of my hosereel, I replaced it with a normal brass fitting.

I get what you're saying in that it's an extra step - but there was no impediment in doing that swap over either.

      • +1

I was just gonna ask that. It's a hose, can't you just put another adapter on it?
Funnily enough the adapter is the same as what my house currently has, from the old owner. They're quite secure but you certainly won't find it just anywhere.

I got burned by Hoselink last time I bought from their sales. Went and bought $200 worth of irrigation gear and then 2 months later when I went to buy more, they had discontinued it. No indication that was it end of life stock - and they would've surely known.

Now I'm stuck with half a system that isn't compatible with any of their new irrigation products and when I contacted them, they simply offered "to look in the warehouse to see if there was anything left over". Have bought two retractable hose systems and other Hoselink garden products but this left a sour taste

    • Sounds like an Apple product

  • +6

You can use this TAKEOFF5 to get extra 5% off.

    • Better to use the Referral link as that nets you a 10% off code!

  • Sounds like it's a tossup between this and Gardena. Would love to hear from more people who have experienced both and can weigh in on which is a better system.

    • I've never used the retractable stuff but I bought a more budget range "kink resistant" hose and it is effing infuriating. It kinks more than any hose I've ever had in my life, and the plastic fittings don't seal at all. I was looking for an upgrade in Bunnings, showed a video of it leaking to an employee… they just handed me a brass replacement, put a marker through the barcode and said have this for free. They know they're rubbish but they still sell them.

      EDIT: Gardena I mean

    • +1

I can only comment on this one - the reel has been OK but I've found the sprayers and connectors to be poor quality and not last long. I've had a several replaced on warranty (Hoselink customer service has been good). You buy into their ecosystem which can be a bit annoying, so if you go with this, make sure you have enough adapters and redundancy for other attachments, tradies tools, etc.

    • +1

If you want something that will last until the apocalypse, get a McNaught. Can often be found on eBay sales. These others don’t come close in build quality/reliability (IMO).

    • I’m in the same boat, have been considering the Gardena one just for ease of access with replacement parts at Bunnings.

Is going from the Classic to Evolve worth the $80?

    • Yes. From an owner of both
Edit: whatever one you get, I also suggest a cover. My oldest unit is roughly 5 years old and still good as new under the cover

      • What is the benefit? Isnt it just a hose? Is the pressure or the spray better?

        • Smoother retraction
          Longer warranty
          Australian made

  • I am in the hoselink ecosystem - have over 10 adapters, their sprinkler, brush and jet accessories and a hose reel. I like that the adapters connect well and don't leak. It feels like a premium product, and it works very well. I used to buy cheap hoses and accessories from Bunnings but gave up on them.

Support also has been good and i had an issue with a sprayer which was replaced under warranty.

My main only issue is, i thought that all of their stuff was made in Australia but only their evolve range is and the rest is in China.

Secondly, i am not sure but their products seem sold out often, seems strange as its winters and it's a gardening product with lots of alternatives, so its not like people are queuing around the block for this. It might be a supply chain issue.

  • The Referral link appears to be broken. I think was just my browser issue, working now.

Also noticed that on the Hoselink site where they have "Rewards" at the bottom left corner, clicking into it says the invitee gets 10% off their first order, rather than $10 as the OzB Referral suggests 🤔

Edit: Ok confirmed the referral code received applies a 10% off at checkout.

  • I've had this since 2019. Still going strong, doesn't leak, hasn't broken. I don't get all the hate for the proprietary fittings. They work well, you can get adapters for regular fittings. I paid $170~ so after inflation this is cheaper.

Grabbed two classic 20m for $347.23 delivered using the 5% off code above, one for front and one for back, hopefully the wall mounting bracket is easy to install.

  • +1

    Has hoselink improved at all?

I got one about 5 years ago and its shit. Takes nearly 5 kilos of pressure to unwind and the water pressure is garbage. Also got the adapter converter too cause their hose heads were shit and VERY prone to calcium build up.

My Gardena out the back is far superior.

  • Didn't wake up this Monday morning thinking I'll be in the market for a hose reel. Pulled the trigger and got the Evolve 30m for $258.39 using the Referral link to get a code for an additional 10% off. Bought a few other extra items and accessories too whilst at it.

  • what would I need to purchase as an adapter to have this hoselink reel to connect to some sort of spray washer foam jet? any suggestions much appreciated as this hoselink ecosystem of accessories as varied as it is doesn't seem to have an offering.

assume it'd start with needing this adapter https://www.hoselink.com.au/products/click-on-adapter-set?va…?

    • If the spray washer has a connector like this sprinkler (just first sprinkler I found to show the connection) - https://www.bunnings.com.au/pope-handy-sprinkler_p3125328, then yes, that adapter will work.

There's also a video on that adapter webpage that shows you how it works, if you missed it.

    • You probably just need this part (because the additional bit of plastic is likely already on the hose): https://www.hoselink.com.au/products/click-on-adapter?varian…

I bought several in the last Black Friday sales, because I keep losing them!

      • +1

Argh damn, wish I saw your post before I pulled the trigger before. I ended up getting 2x https://www.hoselink.com.au/products/click-on-adapter-set?va… for adapter spares, when I could have got more of your linked ones which is exactly what I needed as spares instead 😓

        • +1

Depends if you'd rather unscrew or untwist a quarter turn. Either will work. You can leave the adapter on the accessory and just twist to connect

      • +1

cool so just grab this single adapter rather than set I linked and it'll hook into 3rd party jet foam sprayers like https://amzn.asia/d/06LAxA6D? also is there a workaround to spending under $99 to qualify for free shipping?

Prefer my $10 Kmart hose and $172.75 left in my pocket

  • Any clearances for me to upgrade my whole home?

    • +1

If you're lucky, your local Bunnings might have left over Pope 100 year anniversary stuff on clearance

  • Bought one a few years back. still got it. still get disappointed by the pressure drop through their fittings every time I use it.

FYI - their 13mm hose reduces to around 10mm through the fittings. The pressure / flow drop for me was noticeable.

  • Buy a Gardena. Comments about redued pressure are correct. Also, retraction is no where near as good as Gardena. The marketing hype around Hoselink is amazing, but its not a good product. I brought into the hype a few years ago and regret my purchase everytime i use it. Just buy a Gardena.
