Need to upgrade my current AVR and been wanting one of these for a while. Saw that Amazon's price has dropped on it today. Has been cheaper in the past, especially via Good Guys commercial (I believe around 750) but it's no longer listed on that site, so I think those days are gone :(. Personally, I am holding out till I find one below $900 but I may end up just giving in and buying this one.

  • Ive been looking at some of the new receivers. ive been using the marantz sr7002 for maybe over 15 years lol..probably dont need to upgrade

  • Great receiver got one a year and a bit ago for 850 I think.

    • Wish they would go that low again. I want this reciever but knowing they have gone much lower in the past really puts me off buying it now.

    • I paid $780 in January 2025 via TGG Commercial. I doubt it will ever go this low due to inflation eating into buying power of our $.
It's a great receiver even in the new price range.

      • I got it for $675 from TGG a while age, it is so much better than my previous non network connected yamaha.

        • Indeed.
I had an ancient 15yr old Onkyo receiver, non network connected that blew one channel.
Denon is light years ahead as expected. That price you got is unreal! How did you do it?

  • They've just announced (or about to, I can't remember) new models so you might see these come down more?

    • I think that is only for the higher models which is quite a step up in price. I dont think the 1900h is expected anytime soon but hope i am wrong.

      • Yes you appear to be correct!

      • Hope so too, but home theatre is pretty niche these days, and demand just isn't around in Australia for these products these days.

        • As a sample selection of 1 person, you’re either 100% correct or 100% wrong 😉

  • I'm in the same boat as OP. Also looking at this one and am hoping for a sub $900 deal at some stage noting that it's been a fair bit cheaper in the past.

  • I have a 4k Onkyo package with Atmos upward firing speakers.
Will this work if I replace the receiver and use my Atmos speakers?

    • Yep I don't see why not

    • Without knowing your exact setup, it should work just fine. Speakers don't care what drives them unless they are silly low impedance, which is not too common.

I would think that it probably isn't worth the expense though, as electronics typically have less affect on overall sound compared to changing speakers. Especially at the budget end of speakers.

      • I'm only asking because the ONKYO is quite of a punish to operate, so I was open to a new unit if there is any value in it.

    • Depends on the set up. My speakers are pretty easy to drive so the diff between 80 and 100 would be pretty negligible.

      • Sure you can drive lower end speakers now, but what if you wanted to upgrade your speakers later? I guess you'd have to buy another amp.

    • That's such a broad statement. Not everyone needs a Ferrari to go shopping at Aldi. (Denon AVR-X1800H owner here). This Receiver is perfect for my Home Theater setup.

      • If you want to upgrade your speakers later without having to upgrade your amp you'd buy 100 watts+ per channel. Unless you want to buy another amp later.

    • This is so untrue. There is a little more to it, but basically the difference between 80w and a 100w with the same speaker at max volume will be around 1db SPL. So small you would not be able to hear the difference doing an A to B comparison.

Depending on speaker sensitivity, most of us listening at sane levels in an average sized room, are probably only using between 1W to 10W of available amplifier power per channel.

Without getting all technical, it takes 10 x the power to double the spl. Doubling the power gets you 3db, which is a pretty small difference, as the DB scale is logarithmic.

Have a play with this SPL calculator. Just type in your speaker sensitivity and then have a play with the other factors.

      • If you're going to the trouble of spending close 1K or more on an amp it really should be 100 watts+. That way in future you can upgrade your speakers without having to buy a new amp.

Sounds like no one believes in trying to future proof anymore, even a little bit, when buying an amp🙄.

        • If it's mainly for music you're better off getting a 2ch setup (and add a sub later if need be).

Active monitors are the best and easiest bang for buck.

AVRs are good in/out boxes but not really good at anything. Maybe everyone on here are buying them for movies and TV but it's a lot of faff around, cabling and those receivers go out of date pretty fast when different sound and video codecs keep coming.

A good Soundbar+sub/rears like the Q950A etc is heaps for an apartment personally, but rubbish for music.

          • @G-Shock: As some home theatre guys told me years ago "If you're going to buy an amp, any amp, make sure its minimum 100 watts a channel".

I'd rather overdrive old speakers instead of under driving new speakers.

            • @scooba: Exactly, and a integrated amp or Poweramp at that.

          • @revheadgl: Like everything on here. People are bias if they bought something.

            What would you recommend

  • I literally purchased this item ten days ago from Selby Acoustics, who happened to have the best price around at the time. Just under $980 (including delivery).

Very nice box. A step up (and eArc) from my old Yamaha Aventage RX-A660.

Even so, still suffering the odd 'glitch' with HDMI switching from the TCL TV/Kodi/Foxtel/DVD. Annoying. First-and-a-half world problems.

  • Old-school, I remember getting a Denon avr from the USA in 2008 when the solar was great. Was cheaper than here even with delivery.
