Before you ask, no it doesn't have a scanner.
Not all time low, but good price.
But otherwise a good Ozb favorite and can get 3rd party cartridges.

CamelCamelCamel.Facebook marketplace, I wouldn't buy new at $140 or more unless I can tax expense it away.
I haven't seen any really good deals for laser printers lately.
Brother printers are widely regarded as the best consumer printers. They have made moves to force use of genuine cartridges, but they are much less restrictive than alternative printers, such as from HP.
How about this Epson Workforce Pro WF-3825 at $150 and $39 for 1100 pages in colour? 21 ppm in black and 11 ppm in colour.

It's inkjet
Ink will be dried out if unused, right?
@bcYield: HP is a lifetime subscription buying pos ridiculously priced cartridges. Can't believe this scam still works in the 2020s
@spy: The printer was cheap or almost free with a purchase of a laptop. It came with over 6 month of free inks. Then I have paid $10-15 a month and thought It'd cost the same to travel to OW to print at a similar rate of $1.5/page (colour) I paid. The thing is I still pay if I don't use it. Now I want to dig the subscription.
This printer is bullet proof. Got it (or a similar model) second hand for $10 . Laser cartridges don't dry out. Have printed a few hundred pages over the last 7 years and now using a 3rd party cartridge
I think to continue using 3rd party toner you may need to avoid prompts to auto update firmware.
yep dont do firmware updates on a brother printer if you use third party toner
also… when firmware on devices dont give you any new features… they are probably taking something away
Will these new printers come with the latest firmware blocking 3rd party cartridges?
@Logical: no idea sorry
Also if you want to read about the third party Toner & Breather Printers here is a light read for you
https://consumerrights.wiki/w/Brother_printers_causing_issue…
Do you have to keep this plugged in or just plug to the wall when needed ? I bought 2, one for mum and one for me….
Spooling speed?
Yes
I’d say it’s slow just like it’s similar model
Single Motor unfortunately.
Actually the similar model (and presumably this one too) has a small memory buffer so it takes forever to print something simple.
One hell of a printer that is awesome!!!
Does it print white?
Yes
Yes.
Set your text to white, print and let us all know
How you tell if printed or not?
Secret mode only. Alien technology…very hush hush.
yes, but it consumes a lot of toner for it :-)
Bought it during covid, use it for occasional printing, still going strong after 4 years, or 5?
COVID was 6+ years ago
Haven't been to a hospital or aged care in a while? COVID is now and forever.
"we are still experiencing longer than usual call times due to the pandemic"
Thanks for sharing
I just bought a new toner cartridge for my one of these. None of the third party toner cartridges have good reviews - not one. I'm not sure if this is some conspiracy by Brother employess or they are all genuinely rubbish, the bad reviews seem genuine. Anyhow, I ended up buying the real thing. The printer is excellent though.
Try hottoner.com.au for $10.
Do these modern updated lasers still accept generic toner?
I recall Brother was getting thingy with non-genuine inks and such recently especially with firmware updates
Is it heavy ?
No its your brother
Slow clap…
Very good
I see old people
At least 28 of them
Excellent quality printer, especially as compared to the budget home use HP ones.
Love this printer. I just wanted a basic reliable b/w laser printer that works when you need it. The software isnt too overbearing. Cheap aftermarket cartridges
Can't remember when the last time i used a printer.
Brudda
If you need scanning.
Pay 2x for just scanning? Any other benefits?
Print only vs. Print, Scan, Copy, Fax
@bcYield: Update: Upon checking, they both are close in terms of capabilities and speeds for the Scan. Tempted to get rid of my HP subscription, costly in both fee and toners even I buy myself.
@bcYield: Generic Brother toners are cheap and widely available. Not the case with HP toners. You can get cheap ones in Facebook Marketplace sometimes if you keep a watch.
@bcYield: Fax is so old now I wonder how many ppl use it. At least it's not as old as sending a telegram…
My 16 y.o. HL-2270DW still works perfectly fine, Brother printers are flawless!
I came here to say that mine too is still beating!
I have the MFC version but unfortunately constant issues printing from Android phones.
I have a previous model in this range and it's bulletproof. It's been chugging away for around 10 years, delivering great prints al low cost. A 4 pack of knock off toners on eBay, today is under $45 - and one lasts for ages.
I got a MFC-J4440DW-RFB from the brother website for 199 delivered. Thought that was a good deal. :) if you want colour and scanner that might be your go
I got this one a while ago for 99 on amazon. Been very happy with purchase. For me it avoids trips to the library. No need for a scanning part. My android phone works perfectly well for that.
I need a colour :)
It is BLACK

I've had this printed a couple of years, don't print a lot but it always works when I need it. Wireless printing no issues
Anyone know where to get cheap hp officejet pro 8130e ink cartridge replacement? Thanks
Does it print on both sides of the paper? This is important for me and the planet.
Yes. DW stands for duplex (2 sided) and wireless
Does anyone know if this works wirelessly with mesh wifi?
I have the basic brother 1000 series and it cant pick up wifi signals from the mesh wifi.
It does but it requires the mobile connect app, otherwise it won't print even tho it detects wiifi. I've got the TP link deco setup.
If you are a parent and value peace and quiet, this printer and a free colouring page website like Monday Mandala, are your friends. Such a good investment that the work printing is just a bonus!
For scanning just use a free scanning app, such as Genius Scan. I think Microsoft have their own version.
I worked for a Canon partner a few years ago and was allowed to take home some older machines that would otherwise have been recycled.
The larger MFDs were not really worth saving, mainly because of ongoing maintenance costs and the minimum monthly print volume needed to keep them healthy. But the smaller business-grade units were absolute gems.
My favourite black-and-white workhorse printer family is still the Canon 05A / CART319 print engine. Canon also manufactured the platform used in the HP LaserJet P2035 / P2055 series, which used the same basic engine design with rebadged cartridges, so they include:
Treated well, these machines can print well past one million pages. Compatible cartridges are cheap, usually around 5,000 pages for about $30. You can expect to replace pickup rollers every ~100,000 pages and the fuser somewhere around the half-million-page mark. I have given dozens of these away to mates and relatives, and I still have a few complete units in the attic - plus enough salvaged parts to last a hundred years.
The big advantage of this engine, and what sets it apart from many newer cheap laser printers, is the cartridge design. The CART319 cartridge includes the toner, drum, developer and waste toner collection - basically everything except the pickup rollers and fixing unit/fuser. That means there is very little long-term risk in using compatible cartridges. If the cartridge is bad, you replace the cartridge. You are not risking any other part of the machine. By contrast, for the OP Brother unit (and current Canon relases), the toner and drum are separate parts with different durability. If poor-quality toner damages the drum, you'll end up replacing both. And with inkjets, bad ink can clog the expensive genuine print head, often costing as much as a new printer.
They are built well, cheap to run, and will probably outlast most printers manufactured today. They are basically the 60-series LandCruiser of small office laser printers: still chugging along long after the shiny new 2025 model has gone to scrap.
hello mr canon.
i have a brother printer that is 'connected' to our wifi according to its digital screen but when i try to actually print, the printer is 'unavailable' most of the time. Dafuq?
Yo! I'll assume that you're on Windows.
My first thought is that it's probably the printer port-type. Windows like to auto-install printers that it discovers targetting them using a WSD-port (dynamic discovery). That can be good for ease of printing the first page, but the identity often changes (on the printer or PC-side), making the printer "unavailable". Using the manufacturer-provided driver will usually correct any issues though. You can check it this way:
Windows 10: Control Panel -> Devices and Printers -> Right-click your printer and select "Printer Properties"
Windows 11: System -> Printers & Scanners -> Click your printer -> Select "Printer Properties"
Under the "Ports" tab, confirm the port-type.
CASE 1: If it says "WSD-xxxxxxx" that's the problem. Simply press "Add port", select TCP/IP port, and enter the printer's IP address (likely 192.168.1.?).
CASE 2: If the port is already a "Standard TCP/IP Port" the driver is installed correctly. Perhaps the printer has changed IP address? It could be if it has a dynamic address configured with DHCP. If so, you might need to configure the printer and set the IP to match the driver port.
In either case, the printer ought to have a static IP address, preferably outside the DHCP range… Although most consumer routers make the whole subnet available to DHCP, so to not complicate matters unnecessarily, just set the static IP high enough in the range (say, 192.168.1.240, for example) or make a "reservation" on the router.
All of the above might be handled by using the manufacturer printer driver as well - They usually set/fix the IP on the printer, and add the correct port in the driver…
I have a LAserjet MFP 4101fdw, I use a 3rd party cartrige that can do 11k pages. So far so good and seems to print the advertised amount.
Wow, 11k - That's awesome! And the same good principle; All-in-one cartridges, compatible units available (HP148) that are not too dear. Both engines are manufactured by Canon with the latter's model-families being Canon LBP240 and MF460.
There are a couple of generations in between the Cart319 / HP05A and Cart070 / HP148, but they are still roughly the same. Main improvement seems to be the warm-up time reduced and higher print speed… Smarter electronics too, so you can't use a HP cartridge on a Canon (and vice versa) any more - That's probably also why the cartridges are more expensive 😝
Haha yes. I like to print… :)
148x genuine is about $450
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/395720440628?_skw=HP148&epid=606…
148x 3rd party is about $150 so big difference.

Printer makes a bit of fuss when installing the OEM though…
Oki D421DN is a basic duplex led laser printer with ethernet but you can buy a wireless board for it. Prices vary so it's worth doing your research.
The wireless connectivity for Brother printers are very bad… Never shows up when I try to print, only shows up once in a blue moon like the CEO.
Always buy wired.
Use the iPrint&Scan app and just share the doc/image to the app. Works every time.
I have to admit that Brother's implementation could be better… I've lost coulnt of the times I've had to help my dad with his Brother printer 🤦♂️
But wired ethernet vs wifi is irrelevant as long as both connect to the router - But the protocol is critical no matter what carries the data.
That said, "Direct Wifi Printing" (without a router) should be illegal - Yuck!
It's a great printer, except for that awful colour! The HP LaserJet M110w looks much better, but it's HP so no deal.
"You, who I called brother. How could you have come to hate me so?"
Slower speed, lower yield, smaller tray capacity at the same price.
Most importantly, I had two HP printers in the past and both were disasters…
Third time's a charm? The magic 8-ball says "Don't count on it".
Can confirm - these Brother lasers are absolute workhorses.
I’ve had the older HL-2242D since 2014 and it has printed thousands of pages without drama.
Replaced the toner about 5 times at $30-50 each.
The only reason I’m even considering replacing it now is because I want a model with a scanner. Otherwise, I’d just keep using it.
I don't know if we had the same one but please check the reviews on the cartridge replacement. I had a brother laser printer and might have printer 300-400 pages with the cartridge that came with it. Went online to buy a new cartridge and the reviews we appaling. Basically it doesn't print anywhere near the 1000s of pages it claimed. We couldn't give ours away. We bought a CIS instead.
Whats a good deal on a colour laser with scanner?
