I realised today that cheese cannot make a quality screwdriver, so I've been on the hunt for something better.

I've gotten a bit obsessed with Japanese tools, after buying this today: https://sydneytools.com.au/product/vessel-9006pb-6pce-megado…

And then I came home and found this deal, that was posted in Dec for a higher price: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/939836

  • What exactly is the woody penetrating?

    • Lol - but in all seriousness I think it means it's a full tang construction, so the metal "penetrates" the whole way through the handle to a flat bit on the bottom of the handle which you can hammer without destroying the handle.

      • So you penetrate the tang?
        Got it ; )

      • so… a chisel?

        • No. Don't pry or twist things with a chisel, you'll risk damaging the cutting edge.

    • adult version of toy story?

  • Bought a flat head and a Philips in Tokyo. Beautiful drivers.

    • I love their ball grip electric screwdrivers. Daily use for me.

      • I bought the low-torque high-speed model. Works great for long machine screws. Break it by hand then run the motor at high speed.

        • bloody hell. stop tempting me- whatever you do- do NOT post a link to that!!

        • which model do you use?

        • I already have one of those but now I want this set of 6, but why would I use these when I have an electric one? lol

          Still want them.

          • @bleeder: one for each hand mate- born to multitask!!

        • I bought the multi speed one. I also prefer it over my drill driver/impact driver. More versatile than the the fancy micro driver i bought.

I also have full (manual) Wiha set for more fragile things.

          • @Schrodinger: FWIW the multi-speed one only goes up to 400rpm while the actual high-speed one goes up to 1200rpm, both no-load.

            • @eug: Do you know the specs on the gold one, I bought that one when I saw it on special on OzB but never understood if it's high torque or high speed or whatever. I figure it's a balanced one?

              • @bleeder: According to the listing it's:

                Low: 280 rpm/min/1.2 Nm;
                Medium: 340 rpm/min/1.6 Nm;
                High: 400 rpm/min/2.0 Nm;
Maximum endurance when hand cranking: 12 Nm

It's the same as the 3-stage one linked above.

          • @Schrodinger: I have the gold one, don't even know what type it is, only one speed but it seems perfect. Only need to manually do the last bit to get it tight (or the start to loosen), you want to do the last bit of tightening yourself anyway. Used to use a drill and it's way more clumsy to handle, hard to use in tight spots, and I've overtightened Ikea stuff where it's pulled the screw through the chipboard lol.

        • will the motor break if you use it to manually torque it? it says in the description it will lead to failure

          • @viper8548: The gears can get damaged, but it's not too different to the low-speed ones. The high-speed one has a max manual tightening torque of 10Nm, the low-speed 12Nm.

          • @viper8548: wtf, I'm still gonna do it though, what am I gonna do, switch to another screwdriver for the last bit of tightening? Ruins the point of having something for convenience.

            • @bleeder: I use my drill for all this stuff, accepting that sometimes I will fly too close to the sun and damage the chip board… but as somebody has so many kids and heaps of flatpack furniture I think is probably a better option, especially when trying to hold my drill in all positions.

I guess I don't really need it either, but it loks cool.

      • Totally. Their electric ball grip screwdriver is superb.

      • Is it important to have a good ball grip when using their penetrating driver?

  • I have the wood set for a while now and ordered the precision yesterday. They do make awesome tools. https://amzn.asia/d/0dgX3ERE

    • Made in Taiwan

      • Taiwan #1

    • Do I need a 4th precision driver set… I have Wiha, Wera and maybe buy Vessel to complete the collection.

  • These are my favourite screwdrivers, I love them so much I bought 2 spare sets for when I inevitably lose some, so should be set for LIFE

  • I use VESSEL - ARMOR GRIP™ Screwdriver Cross Point 4PC. Set (JISDRIVE) No.550APH4PBU https://amzn.asia/d/0iLVyntm on my Honda. I paid $35. JIS drive, not Philips.

    • I have the Armor Grip and the Woodies, both are fantastic!

      • Are they for different purposes? Or just a personal preference thing?

        • I got the Armor for the garage, then I wanted another set for inside, so got the woodies to try.
Now I have both spread between the house and garage :\

  • Sorry what is the diff between $10 kmart set with this?

    • Quality

    • these are made of steel, not cheese!!

    • wood'nt you like to know

    • Ego

  • Thanks OP, wasn't planning on that.

  • Another set to keep an eye out for (ph1 ph2, pz1 pz2, 2x slotted) https://www.amazon.com.au/Wera-Kraftform-Lasertip-Profession…

I've seen them for as low as $30, they're very grippy on screws and comfortable in the hand

    • I got them for $26.16, but that was from Amazon UK, and Amazon Germany, they have since clamped down and dont offer Wera, Knipex, etc. from UK/Ger Amazon so I dont think we will ever get those prices again.

Back to the Australia tax and made up excuses why they have to rip us off.

    • I got the Wera 6 bit screwdriver set to keep in a drawer in the kitchen for when I couldn't be bothered going to the garage. Probably use it more than my regular screwdrivers these days. Most use is little innocuous tasks or changing batteries in kids toys etc, so the downsides of a magnetic set aren't a big deal, and I can always go and grab proper ones when needed.

Wouldn't buy at this price, but a great bit of kit for day to day use:
      https://amzn.asia/d/09rkzNaL

      • I have one of the little tool boxes from Total tools that i keep in my lounge for my inside tools, they get more use than any that are in the garage.
Kinda need a larger inside toolbox though.

  • Beautiful tools.

I get the Japanese tool obsession and Vessel make some of the best. Engineer tools are also very good.

    • Yeah Vessel and Engineer makes some great Japanese tools. I love the Engineer plier I bought.

  • Thanks OP. Wasn't planning on buying that this month. Got the six and the electric ball for $78 shipped. Hopefully the six are a buy it for life deal!

  • Review

"Sometimes I hold them just because I love the feel."

Ok.. fess up. Which one of you wrote that?

  • I have these, they are VeryGood … have even got a couple of stripped Philips heads out with them, rather than having to drill heads off. The grips definitely allow you to maximize tourque on the screw too.

  • Now showing as $98.35. So I missed out but maybe not a bad thing as I'm not exactly short of screwdrivers!

    • Nah click the other options on amazon. I just got it. Like going used and it will show it new from JP

  • I watched a video review and sold it to myself and now OSS. Damn the wood looks good.

    • Update, I got it. If you want it, click the buying options like you are buying used. *Show options. It shows the JP one underneath the US one ($93). Ordered for price and the extra item the op got for the 15% discount. $52.67 seems solid for this. Time to rest my Stanley plastic Thanks heaps OP!

  • Thanks, I bought for $42.70 with this tiny carpenter's square

    • I like that square - bought.
Niigata Seiki make some nice tools - bought the vernier too.

      • It was the cheapest tool I could find and I didn't pay it much attention. You prompted me to take another look, the division markers look brilliant!

  • If I didn't have a near identical Wiha set, would have bought this. But this one can be hammered… And this is JIS although I own separate JIS bits.

Interestingly the wood is injection molded 70% wood, 30% plastic composite.

    • Ended buying now, think later.

      • why think at all? it only ruins the fun!

  • Thanks OP, inspired me to buy a Ball grip driver
    Like @FizzBalls says - essential for a japanese m/c

    • agree it looks a nifty tool. gonna keep it next to my sofa to save the long (10m) treks to the garage.

  • It doesn't want to send any discounted Vessels to my location (SE Melb) but the full price ones will send fine.

    • You're welcome to send them to my address and I can send them off to you. One day.

      • Much appreciated!

  • showing up as 97$

    • Me too, looks like we missed out

  • Giggity.

    • Straight from J-A-Pan 😆

  • deal is back slightly more expensive $46.91
