What are these used for?

Anything you want to switch on remotely or for items that have a hard to reach plug.
I use mine for lamps, kitchen striplighting, electric blankets, devices i want to turn on an off.
I group all my living room lamps and then dont have to spend time going around the house turning lamps on/off.
Electric blanket turns on at 8pm turns off at 10pm to preheat bed. Additional schedule turns off at 5am incase i turn it on manually but forgot to turn it off.- 12
The big downside to this (or most other smart plugs) is that there isn't a hardware remote you can easily pair. However this IKEA one does, but you need a compatible gateway device for it to respond from your phone
They're also great as smart timers, IIRC with Tapo sockets/bulbs you can schedule lights to turn on at sunset, and off at sunrise, and it will adjust to seasonal shifts in twilight hours. Good for outdoor lighting.

Originally bought it to automate the Christmas tree lights, but now I use mine to stop kids getting up too early to watch tv. They know it won’t work before 6:30am so they stay in bed. Works a treat.

other than being physically small, and able to track real time wattage, what else should buyer be looking for in this? a reputable brand? also be able to integrate into servers locally?

I don't think these track wattage, only on off. For energy monitoring you need the P110.
Home assistant has a tapo integration which allows you to add them in to control dumb powered devices. I've had mixed success with discovery and typically have to manually add them to home assistant by IP after they've been configured by the app.
I hear tapo items can operate locally without internet access once configured.

Yeah their matter ones need their app to setup and after that they go local. I was quite pissed about needing to create an account with tplink for my matter enabled switches tbh but at least they’re local afterwards

I prefer the P110 which are exact the same but also has power monitoring. Really useful for if you’re wanting to know how many watts certain appliances are drawing

The Meros one are absolutely crap, I bought them before and I returned them, they randomly get offline and you can not use them. The tapo one are better for connectivity and doesn't have wifi issues and there are very easy to use.

I prefer the Meross ones (no drop outs in 3 years, and better stats), so comes down to preferred taste. I like these being small and use them adhoc.

Got 2 sets of 4 and all died within 6-8 months after the first use. I wouldn't recommend the Meros too.

Is it safe to plug a desktop computer onto that? Curious as I sometimes found my computer hang in there so need a power hard reset.

I've done exactly this and it worked a treat. The only time it became an issue is when a capacitor in the plug started to fail, you'll hear it click off and on really fast. It started out doing this intermittently and because of that it was super hard to track down, even the PC would keep humming along nicely without any disruption but eventually it just did it continuously which was a dead giveaway.
From what I read on here, it's not a matter of it it will fail but when it will fail. I got around 18 months out of mine. Replaced with a new capacitor and it's running great again.

As above I had 4 of these and all 4 failed with click of death.
One of these was hooked up to a Dell tower and it killed the power supply.
Never trusting these plugs again to anything high powered, expensive or constant draw.

I've done this with another power meter. Bios is set to turn on when powered.
You need to calculate the PC wattage. But I'm sure it's fine.

Have few P100, P110 and P110M - all work fine, and I had no issues with none of them.
Recently found that Ikea has this $18 bundle https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/grillplats-plug-with-remote-con… which includes a plug with Matter support and power monitoring + dual-button remote Bilresa. They are $23 if purchased separately.
A plug is wider than TP-Link ones, so you can’t use them side by side in the same outlet. Also, the button on top of the plug is easy to accidentally press :( These are the cons.
The bundle itself is a good deal imo. I was looking at these recently given the great pricing, but from what I read it seems that you cannot simply run these on a regular home network. They require a Thread Border router for use with and smart home software unless you're happy just using the on/off functionality of the controller.

Essentially you need a matter-compatible gateway hub for it to go online. Like the DIRIGERA hub.
But sometimes you don't need it to go online, e.g. all you need is a wireless switch by the bedside.

Strictly speaking, no, you don’t. I don’t have Ikea hub, but I use Home Assistant + Apple TV that allow me configuring button actions and the plug automations as a bare minimum. HA has the required dashboards.

The Ikea ones would have been a candidate previously, but when they moved their product line to matter, their new ones don't expose energy monitoring as part of their Zigbee compatibility mode. (You can only on/off toggle and set the re-power behavior in Zigbee for them)

I wonder if these are better than the Arlec grid connect ones I got a while back that seem to keep failing after a year or so, or some other cheap ones (different brand) before that which one time when I operated it whilst going away for the weekend, it somehow tripped my circuit breaker or safety switch for the rest of the house, turning off my fridge and ruining more than a hundred dollars of frozen and refrigerated food…. can't remember what it was - it was binned immediately… been kind of put off such things for reliability issues.
