  • Works out equivalent pricing if you get the charging bundle from Tesla $1200 bundle -$550 for mobile charger = $650

        • You can actually order the bundle, and cancel one of them straight away, and get the discounted price for wall connector or mobile connector. That’s what I did. Have to do it straight after ordering, cause when they start processing the order, you won’t be able to cancel.

        • It took just under a week to get my ones from Tesla to Brisbane. Took about a day to process and ship

    • my biggest issues with these things is they don't have a function that directly only uses solar.

      you have to use the tesla battery system in order to have it draw from house battery only.

      • You can do this via the Tesla app. Use charge on solar combined with Time based control.

      • That function only work on Tesla EV.

        • and a Tesla Powerwall i believe! We have this charger and a Telsa EV and can Solar charge either using ChargeHQ (with a $7 per month subscription) or using Home Assistant based automations (free although if you dont already have Home Assitant this can be a time consuming exercise).

      • I just do it in homeassistant. It's super easy if you've got a CT clamp on your line. Or you can just match charge rate in the car to the solar production.

    • Is there any advantage in the Tesla granny charger versus a generic one?

      • Only if you have a Tesla. I believe it's capped to 8a where as if you own a Tesla it's 10a after a firmware update

        • You can pull a max of 3000w (say 12.5amp) using the 15amp tail (included with the Tesla granny charger) on a 15amp power point.

        • Its not technically restricted to Teslas. It just needs to be connected to a Tesla to do the firmware update, but once updated, any EV can then get the full 10/15 amps.

    • for those that don't know appparenly bunnings do an install service for 699 of any charger

            • @DingoBlue: Don't forget a $15 breaker, some wire and conduit. Probably a good $50 there.

              • @buffalo bill: RCBO breaker $40, AC isolator $20, 10mm2 cable $10 per meter x how many meters from your switchboard. Thats the material cost alone.
                and expect to pay around $150/hr for a good sparky. long cable runs take time vs next to the switchboard.

    • I found it was cheaper to buy a 32a tail for the UMC and get a socket installed for that.

      • I believe that’s only single phase 7kw where as this can be 3 phase 22kw. The Tesla can intake 11kw

    • it really depends there are alot of sparky's that will rip you off put in stuff you don't need just to boost the price.
      The genunie ones that aren't money hungry will charge about 650 to install it. the ones that like to rip you off will charge between 800 and 1000 or even more some of them. which is a joke. It also depends on how far your switch box is from you charger in the garage.

      • The prices have gone up recently as it's now mandatory to put in a RCBO for any EV charger install, and if it's 3 phase, that RCBO is more expensive (at least $150 bucks for something decent).

        I recently had a 3 Phase 22kw install done that was about 3 meters from my switchboard (pretty direct route under the house) to my garage for about $970 which I thought was a really good price.

    • Totally depends on your home setup and how much work is involved with wiring.

    • I got it professionally installed last week for $950 in Sydney, which was a good price as we had to run about 20 meters of 32AMP 3 Phase wiring from the meter at the front of the our home to the garage at the back of our home. Was quoted $2,000-2,500 also by some. So do your search to get the right price.

        • It depends on the installation difficulty and distance to run the witing.

          • @OZBsince2018: if its in the garage and the garage has the switch board on the side then its not expensive the max cabling would be 5m at worst 10m. Unless you put the charger in a stupid location.

            • @kungfuman: Mate read my comment above. Distance from my meter to Garage was about 22 meter, and its a double storey house, so running the wiring was a pain.

        • A rip on the installer. Most companies are starting at 1k and that's directly next to the switchboard. OZBsince2018 got a good deal.

    • You can find a decent one for around $600 from aritasker.

      • If a licenced electrician was decent they wouldn't be on Airtasker.

    • $300 to $400 within a few meters from the meter box is reasonable.

      It's just because people spend $60K on an EV, it's easier to accept paying $1,000 to install an EVSE.

      To put things into perspective, it costs $700-800 to install a split A/C back-to-back, which requires electrician and refrigerant licenses.

      Is an EVSE more difficult to install than an A/C system?

      Isolator + some sort of breaker + few meters of wire and conduit = less than $100, plus 1-2 hours of labour.

      • The "some sort of breaker" is ~$150. Maybe let's not dictate prices of things we have no clue about.

        • No, it may be $150 when you look it up, but it's not going to be the one they use.

          If you want to specify a particular high end commercial safety switch, the cost will be on top of whatever they have quoted.

          Never assume because someone charges more they will use top end parts.

          • @browser: Nothing high-end about Clipsal. Standard gear that is widely used in the industry. If you go to Bunnings, the cheapest offering they have is ~$75, again just for the RCBO. If you can find a $300 install (inc. materials) quote from an ethical and sustainable business I'll pay for it myself.

  • How fast does this charge compared to the granny cable charger that comes free with the car?

    My Ix1 can only handle upto 11kw.

    • Granny should be about 2kw. This can do 7-22kw depending on your cabling. Best to go 22 phase 3 and your car can do 11.

      • They would need to have three phase already, otherwise that can be a few thousand for a marginal increase from 7kW single phase to 11kW on three phase.

        • yeah but they asked how fast is it compared to the granny charger. A financial decision lies with them.

          • @Oh Boy: Your first two sentences were objective comparisons of speed, compared to a granny charger. I was more so responding to your third sentence which is where you recommended going three phase, which I don't think is a good decision but you're right it's up to them.

            • @danzha: fair, but if they are upgrading, from what I hear, it's not much price difference but that is very subjective depending on the lenth/distance etc. Might as well future proof as more and more cars would accept 22kw.

      • Granny/Trickle chargers that come with EVs seem to be about 1.5kw at the car - instead of being 10A they're mostly 8A, and then there's the slight overhead of actually charging.

        2kw is about 33% faster than 1.5kw, 7kw is 400% faster (… but then take away a few hundred watts for the overhead/efficiency loss).

        Definitely go for 11kw if you can stomach the costs, otherwise 7kw is absolutely enough for actual real life!

    • Single phase is 32A max x 240V =7680W

      3 phases is 16A x 3 x 240v = 11520W

      • Tesla wall charger 3 can do 22kw on 3 phase. Tesla Model3 and ModelY are limited to 11kw, but other EVs can do 22kw.

    • 7kW is about 4x faster than your wall socket charger (~1.8kW)

    • 22kw if your car can support it. usually only teh model S and model X could charge at those AC speeds.

    • Doesn't come with the car anymore…..Well for Teslas anyway.

  • I don't know much about EVs but was considering one soon. Do people sometimes get this Tesla wall charger even though they might have, say for example, only a Mercedes EV or like an MG?

    • Think of it as a charger at a public charging station.

    • Yes, I just bought a Sealion 7 and have this charger. Works great.

      • I've also got a SL7 and this charger too. Is there the ability to start / stop the charging via the app at all? It would appear there isn't, so I'm just using the isolator switch.

        I had a BYD EV Switch charger but had endless faults / issues with it and it was a fire hazard as the main board inside had started to overheat and had very obvious burn marks.

        • I'm very new to using the charger. I put it on a schedule from midnight to 6am to charge at 8 cents kw with AGL.

    • They are a great quality charger for a very good price. The only problem is that you cannot control the charge rate unless you have a Tesla. (As far as I'm aware). When I charge my BYD on it it's full 7kw or nothing. With the Tesla connected I can control the rate via the car.

      • Depends on the car, yes. I have a geely and I believe charge rate can be controlled.

        • Why would you want to control the charge rate? Wouldn't faster always be better?

          • @tritorius: Better for battery longevity although most batteries will outlive the car

          • @tritorius: So you can match your solar or slow the charging down if you are about to blow your main breaker by importing too much!

      • You really want a charger that supports OCPP if you have a non-tesla ev especiually if you also have solar.

  • I'm looking for a 7kw EV charger and have heard good things of the Tesla one.

    I have a GoodWe battery and inverter at home, and also read online it's good to try and match your EV Charger to your Inverter brand wise, so they talk to each other better.

    Does anyone have any experience or info on this - whilst it would be good to manage the inverter and the charger in the one app, I don't mind a different brand if it's either cheaper and/or more features (this telsa one?)

    • The Tesla EVSE is great if you have a Tesla - all the smarts are in the vehicle.

      If you don't have a Tesla, it's a pretty dumb charger - but ok for the price, I guess.

      • Not exactly, I have a non -tesla car which schedules charging which is all I need, so this 'dumb' charger works fine to capitalise on cheap overnight rates

        If need solar etc then yes, this one is not for you

      • The app lets you schedule, and can set if you allow certain cars or all cars etc.

    Most of the portable EV chargers, https://depow.com.au/products/de-portable-ev-charger-22kw and tail for Tesla UMC have a 32A 5 pin https://evchargers.com.au/product/varplug-to-mobile-connecto…

    Obvious these do not work with 20A plug. Is hiring a sparky to change over to 32A and RCBO change only way to use existing setups or getting this Wall connect is the last resort.

    • you can just keep ya configuration don't bother with changing 32A socket because most EVs will max up at 11kw AC anyway and 20A on 3 phase exceeds that

      just get a 5pin 32A portable charger and then dial it down to 20A when charging. This way you can use it for 32A in the future if you want.

      I have a 3pin 32A socket and 3 pin 32A single phase EV charger which is enough for my car as it maxed out at 7kw AC

    • Can't speak for the Tesla tail, but that 32a depow one with the 5 pin will work with your existing socket. It will just max out at 20a instead of 32a. I'm currently on the Jaecoo Owner Facebook group and lots of owners have asked that exact same question as you.
