What are the benefits of a matter protocol?
Matter is a universal, open-source smart home language backed by major tech giants (Apple, Google, Amazon). It allows smart devices—like TP-Link's Tapo and Kasa products—to communicate seamlessly across different brands and ecosystems
so in short, allow you to add the device to Apple homekit, Google home or Amazon Alexa.
This is pretty useful if you have multiple IoT devices from different brands, and to create automation rules or scene (eg. Bed time to turn off multiple devices, dim lights etc.)

Great explanation. Matter compatibility is so good because if you have say a google nest hub, it acts as the base and you can connect anything matter. E.g. water leak sensor from IKEA or these smart outlets!

matter has been nothing but a headache compared to wifi and zigbee (which I prefer the most by far) for me
but if your only option is matter then it is what it is and its getting better every year
Matter over WiFi worked on my Meross smart plugs, though required a bit of fiddling initially. Can't comment on Thread.

Grid Connect devices are rebranded Tuya, but usually their WiFi only ones AFAIK. They require a constant internet connection to their cloud, though there are workarounds with HomeAssistant HACS Add-ons.

Turns dumb downlights into smart ones. That's my use case.
I connected smart plugs with the portal heaters in bathrooms and bedrooms
then use TP link smart button to control on / off
also set automation rules to grab the current room temperature
eg. turn on heater when room temp is lower than 19, then turn off when its higher than 23
Guessing that's a seperate device for temperature?

In my home I run a home assistant server which connected all the IoT devices such as temperature sensors, smart plugs, smart lights
this allows me to set automation rules in home assistant
if you just want a simplest solution to set automation rules
you can stay within the TP link ecosystem by getting the TP link branded smart hub and temperature sensor
then set the rules directly from the TP Tapo app

We have a big LED light that connects back to a power point in our lounge room. I can leave it on to go upstairs and turn it off once I go to bed. We have under bench powered lights in our kitchen that we can turn off remotely with Tapo. We use them in the bedroom to remotely turnoff the TV and manage the DC fan.
I’ve been using it for my 5‑year‑old son to automatically turn his night lights off and on before and after he sleeps.

Also use them on my cordless tool battery chargers so they're not sitting on charge when full for hours.
Every one of these I have had (~5) eventually fails in the same way, where the relay is in an infinite loop of on/off. Wouldn't recommend long term.
I’ve had more than eight of these for years, and not a single one has failed.
Wonder if I just had the worst luck, or they've revised the product since I bought mine.
I think a bit of hit and miss with TP-Link. Ive own a lot of their stuff over the years. Some worked really well some did not.

Wow you are lucky, I've had 5-7 fail in the past few years. Just use it to charge phones and stuff not too heavy. Don't want it to fk up my devices as it flicks on and off in milliseconds so I only use it if I'm around, which defeats the purpose lol
