Often just boot up a game Vs bots, just set to start at castle age and game only lasts 25m-30m. Such a fun chilled experience of sim city and action mixed

True, but important to note, this auto includes some of the earlier expansions /dlcs that were paid, and therefore is a little higher in cost, although still cheaper than if you previously bought the game + the dlcs

wow what a question - define 'need'? Look it's probably technically not a life necessity like say buying food for your whole family… would it be highly desirable though, that's a different question… that said, describe your family and whether they 'want' to all play AoE2 with you, do you all have capable devices to do so, and if so, why don't any of them already have steam accounts etc? however yes I would think if you want to install on a bunch of separate devices and have an all out war (which if everyone was committed to it would be really cool and reminds me of my younger days first battling it out with siblings and friends), then you probably want multiple licenses.

Deceptive description on the Steam listing.
AoE II Definitive Edition includes only 4 extra civilisations and their associated campaigns ("The Last Khans") over HD Edition… to get the rest, you need to buy all the Definitive Edition DLCs, which costs an extra AUD$53.88 on top of this Definitive Edition only price.

DE is a 1:1 remake with modern graphics, HD was basically a texture pack
DE just got a patch a few days ago, its still alive and getting MP balance. Its well worth the cost honestly

I think you are confusing expansion packs with civilizations.
AoE II Definitive Edition (2019) included all the civilizations from all the prior editions and expansion packs, plus a few new ones. It now also includes the three expansion packs released prior to 2023 which collectively include another seven civilizations.
Anyone thinking about buying this can rest assured that they will get heaps of content and over 20 civilisations. There are a number of expansion packs available since then, but not required to enjoy the content of this offer and mainly appealing to the hard core fans.

They recently included almost all of the dlc civs into the base game (this version) - with the exception of the last two dlcs of the Chinese civs and new South American civs.

DE has more detailed sprites and effects than thr original release but you don't buy AoE for the graphics
