As much as this sounds good, it'll probably be years before Australian infrastructure catches up, you'll probably only be able to utilise flash charging at the showrooms, which isn't really that practical in the real world

Did you do any research into the tech? or are you imagining a power station requirement to out put 1000kwh of electricity?
They use batteries to charge up your battery. This don't require massive infrastructure input. They've already got flash charging stations in EU and this tech has been only out a few months in China.

@Naigrabzo: Except as we've discussed in a previous thread, BYD's intentions at least partially align with ishoryuken's perspective. BYD have clearly stated that the first tranche of Australian flash charging stations will be installed at select Denza and BYD showrooms in the centre of Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane.
Based on the public statements BYD have made on the subject, there's zero reason to expect flash chargers to start popping up in service centre forecourts along major highways any time in the foreseeable future - they're not planning anything like a Tesla Supercharger-scale rollout, which seems to be what you'd like to see.
My guess is that they're going to be quite rare for at least a couple of years.

How do you think this would work?
Currently you’d have to drive to a Denza dealer in Syd, Mel or Adl to use one of the 1500kW fast chargers.
Who is likely to do that?
Even when (if?) they roll out fast charging to BYD dealerships - who would drive to the dealer to charge their car?
It’s going to be a while (a decade? longer?) before flash charging is a thing here.
And it’s not a thing for home (before anyone asks..)

I was thinking that I put a flash charger somewhere in Sydney (central), but best just out of Sydney around Campbelltown where I can pull up within 2 minutes (already too long) from the motorway to Canberra. Also for people living in Sydney, it would be best to have one just outside of Canberra also.
Why?? because I can just drive to Sydney and do my thang without having to charge. I will only really need it when I leave Sydney (because these pathetic electric cars tend to run of charge constantly).
I am definitely not driving to any dealer; ever to charge.

Disagree with your assessment of a 99kw car being under-powered unless you want to drag race everything (it is more powerful and quicker than the average car in Australia).,Range is the real question they need to look at for suitability against their use. If it is a second car for the weekly work, and they have access to a power point to charge it, then a good option. Look at long range if it is going to be used for country running and weekends away, which I would also recommend to consider, as once you start driving it, you may want to spend more time in it than the bigger vehicle that may be your primary car so may start taking it on longer trips. I also disagree that the new Atto 3 will be any better, noting their continual lack of delivering against promises (inlcuding real world range), build quality and how much risk do you put in spending that much money from a company with such massive debts and dependency on the CCP to survive. Buying a better quality car from a company with long standing history and lots of service and support in Australia, and what is constantly reviewed as a much better car (and now with a price that makes it far more attractive again), I think you gave poor advice.

That makes absolutely no sense. The retail cost of diesel fuel applies in both scenarios, so the overall efficiency is the deciding factor - and a large stationary diesel generator and electric drivetrain is the clear winner there.
In any case, there are less than 20 public EV chargers in Australia primarily powered by diesel generators, and they're all in extremely remote off-grid locations out in woop-woop.
The number of people "recharging their EV while listening to a diesel generator" on any given day is extremely close to zero.

I wish they made something similar, but a bit smaller. 4000mm x 1700mm is really the sweet spot for a small car.

@Richardc: A Yaris is the perfect size. I’d like a bit more ground clearance, since there are quite a few steep driveways around here that mine scrapes on (I need to enter at 45 degrees, and every time I forget, the crunching sound isn’t fun).

We've got the 2024 Kona hybrid, have done just over 17,000kms and it's averaging 4.8l per 100km, mainly driving local roads.

My wife has a 2024 Kona Hybrid N-Line Premium and the best I was able to do on-road was probably 4.1-4.2L/100km. It's honestly a pretty damn efficient vehicle. You just can't be a lead foot as that really will cause the engine to kick in more than the battery power. If you are gently accelerating and making sure to take full advantage of the regen braking, you can do pretty well in it.

I have a Kona EV (standard range).
I would have said the motor was under powered just in specs. But it's quicker than my Mazda 6 which is about 140kw.
Keep in mind there is no gears and instant acceleration. In the real world(not in a dyno) it matters a lot more.

Hyundai is good for after sales service network. Don't underestimate being able to find a dealer for servicing and not having to book 4 weeks ahead. Problem with the new entrants is that their support networks aren't well established.

Both same gear under the skin really. They feel different though so best advice, like any car purchase is to test drive them. Make sure who ever is going to be doing the most miles in the car is comfortable, has a good view, the controls feel natural and in the right spot, etc.

When I drill down into a corporate website for an EV, and I can find all sorts of secondary stuff like touchscreen size and how many smart speakers, but things like battery capacity and chemistry are either absent, or incredibly hard to find… I immediately cross that product off my list.

There is starting to get a lot of demand put on government to mandate clear reporting for all goods logistic lines, and hopefully they start mandating that sort of thing. Logistic lines are likely to be hammered first with a lot more pressure to identify the source of all components going into equipment (everything and not just cars). It becomes relevant as well sometimes when a manufacture launches something, gets everything tested, reviews, etc, and during its time in the market, find a cheaper source of components like CPUs, batteries, screens, power supplies etc, and changes them without consumers knowing that they have not bought the equipment that they had read the reviews and tests on. THey can also have different factories that make the same product but with different components (sometimes in different countries). This will satisfy international demand as well to identify issues such as using Forced Labour on components, which whilst heavily impacting Chinese brands, will also impact others so we can be clear on our choices of what we buy.
Essentially, as you say, we should be able to easily get clear information on details of a particular product.- 1

The Kona is pretty good bang for your buck imo. Has lots of features, pretty decent size and room for a small SUV, and physical buttons for HVAC (this one is a deal breaker for me as I adjust the temp pretty often)

As for 4 star rating, do you know what that means and why? (Mod: Personal Attack) but want answers and to help any others understand, basically, the rating system is continually reviewed and changed but a car is only tested once against them. Older cars are tested against an older standard which does not mean that a three-year old, five-star car, is safer than a one-year old, four-star car. You really need to look at it more closely if you want to use that to make a decision. The Kona scored very highly on occupant protection for adults and children, narrowly missing the overall new 5 star on two areas (out of many), one being pedestrian protection and the other being safety assist (such as reverse AEB is not on the base models). It would have been five stars under the 2023 and early system that most other cars you compare to were assessed against (and some of them may only be three stars if tested under the same system).

Shouldn't compare only the lower end of the market. Better would be the Ioniq 5, EV 6. The cars that led the 800V system for the market. Then even better quality from Chinese cars through to higher end would be the new BMW iX3 with 372km of range added in 10 minutes and still under the LCT. Outside of that you have a range of cars up to the Porsche Taycan, Rolls Royce etc. Hence, a number of options.

Kona SX2 was designed EV first and there is no transmission tunnel in the full EV and legroom is fine. Completely flat floor across the back. Also the frunk is plenty big enough for some cables. I fit a 7m type 2 to type 2 cable, the granny charger and a V2L adapter in mine no problems. 800V architecture with faster charging would be nice but it’s perfectly manageable as it is.

Incorrect and why comment if you do not even know the car. This Kona was designed as an EV first and has a flat floor, unlike the previous Kona 2023 and earlier. It also has decent and comfortable leg room and passenger space for an adult. It also has a frunk big enough for all the cables and things you need and are willing to put up front.
Yes on 400V limiting your charging speed, but that is an insignificant issue for most and only impacts if you are a constant road tripper, which is not the purpose of this car. If that is your purpose, buy the Ioniq 5 or 6 that can change in under 20 min. 40 min is more than enough for most people for on a long trip to stop for lunch and toilet stop, and still do 800km in the day, but that is not a very common thing.

99kW Motor seems a but underpowered.
Need to spend $50,990 to get the 150kW Motor with extended range. I think a fair comparison would be the BYD Atto 3 and the new refresh coming in a month or two will be significantly more powerful and with much better range and likely similar or cheaper price
