Got sick of waiting for the steam machine to actually be released and started to look into just building my own. Came across these MINISFORUM ITX boards which seem to be pretty good value in the current chipoccalypse. These Mobile On DeskTop (MODT) motherboards have soldered mobile CPUs. The barebones SE variants don't include an SSD, RAM, Wifi Card, or SSD heatsink. But this is still a pretty good deal for a shockingly capable CPU, ITX Motherboard, and CPU cooler. This is ATL for these exact boards, but these are refreshes of the MINISFORUM BD770i and BD795i, which have gone lower (likely on clearance). There's two models currently on Amazon:

MINISFORUM have stated in their discord that their ITX motherboards both didn't sell well and had high after-sales costs, and that they will likely stop producing the ITX boards to focus on the MATX line instead. So this might be the last opportunity to grab a relatively well supported (BIOS updates etc), efficient, MODT board.

    Intresting product. I would of through throught something like would sell in the todays market. Slap on a AMD9060XT or something cheap gaming.

    For reference, power consumption. Add 200w for a gpu.

    Power BreakdownIdle & Light Tasks: ~15W – 25W.Gaming (CPU-heavy): ~75W – 90W.Multi-Core Rendering / Heavy Productivity: ~93W – 100W.

    I bought their previous variant the one with the 16 core 7945HX for around the same price - $640-ish.

    It's been pretty good, apart from possible some sleep/hibernate issues (I haven't updated the bios to see if they rolled out any fixes, and it hasn't really bothered me enough to care). I'm currently using it in a NAS/vm server, and idle is higher than intel but still acceptable (~40W with 2x nvme, 96gb ram, sas controller, etc with hdds all idled). Good news is they support pcie bifurcation on that pcie slot, so you can split it into two x8 slots or four x4 slots with some cheap cards and cables on aliexpress. Also, it doesn't include the wifi card, but the slot and hole punchouts are there for one if you want to use it.

    The cooler situation isn't great, since its a laptop cpu you can't replace the builtin heatsink with a regular AM5/LGA1700/etc cooler, so your only option is to use a good fan like Arctic P12 pro to push as much air as possible through the heatsink.

    The killer here is ram costs - you need sodimm ram, and 96GB of ddr5 sodimm was about $330 when I bought, but I think that same kit is well north of $1500 now.

      Yeah same here, very happy with mine and struck gold with 48GB SoDIMM DDR5 before the ram crisis. Also using the p12 pro, temps are pretty good. also note that they dont have a usb c i/o port for the case. power consumption is low since this is essentially a laptop motherboard.

      For the ram, sadly the major manufacturer Crucial ended production so prices went up even more. They were basically the only brand selling high memory sodimm ddr5

      What are the sleep/hibernate issues that you are having?

        The RAM situation is super niche - the vast majority of laptops no longer have SODIMM slots, the aftermarket laptop memory sales as a whole must be tiny.

    I've had issues with my BD790i SE and the only thing their support has ever done for me is sign me up for their newsletter repeatedly. I don't think these motherboards are up to proper specification. if you use a card that draws high on the PCIe power (like some GPUs do), you might run into serious stability issues.

      I use my BD790i SE with a 7900 XTX (360-420W) and it hasn't had stability issues in gaming. I was getting BSOD from idle occasionally but I switched to CachyOS from Windows and that went away. The only remaining issue is sometimes it won't boot when starting it up, but works on the 2nd try. I think their BIOS are a bit dodgy.

        my 7900xtx doesnt work with mine. works in other systems though. tried other power supplies and ram, its definitely the motherboard. and again, minisforum are a (profanity) nightmare to deal with.

          Realistically though, what do you actually expect Minisforum to do ? The only thing they can give you is a BIOS update.

          If the board doesn't work with that card then there isn't really any way the support can help you 😐

      Check the ram speeds and drop down to 5200. I used to have issues with 5600 over clock. Cs2 was constantly crashing. After putting it back to 5200 which is the motherboard spec, it's been good.

    I've got a BD795i SE and generally happy with it, but had the 2.5gig networking die on me and issues with the onboard audio as well. Otherwise great performance for the size, I've got it in a Velka 7.

        At least network and audio are the two simplest things to replace with USB or M.2 devices.
        Most other failures are going to turn the board into a paperweight 😁

    I have the b895i SE but for the 7745HX variant you’re better off getting a 7700 + Mini ITX board from Aliexpress for about the same price.

    Only buy from Amazon as Miniforums direct support is trash.

    First BD790iSE I bought from them didn't boot, took months to get them to refund. Had already bought RAM so committed to a BD795iSE from Amazon and it has worked out reasonably well. No bios updates and some stuff is a bit funky but have tweaked curve optimizer and it clocks well under water cooling with a 3D printed adapter, instant temps can still spike but have used a 6800xt and now a 5070ti without any issue.

    Tl;dr YMMV, buy from Amazon if curious about the product.

    I simply bought an Asrock B850i Lightning ITX AM5 motherboard, and tried to get an 8600GE for it, which is a hard to obtain 35W Pheonix APU that is effectively a Phoenix laptop processor in a desktop AM5 package. Had some dramas getting the 8600GE, and bought an 8600G which is the desktop 65W Phoenix processor. Then the 8600GE arrived as well. Then I found out that there's an "ECO" mode in the BIOS that turns the 8600G into an 8600GE. In fact its better than an 8600GE or a H-series laptop Phoenix because ECO mode doesn't disable EXPO, and you can run fast RAM. I run DDR5-6000. With only 35W to cool even a standard AMD heat sink is enough, and its quieter than an actual laptop Phoenix processor with a laptop centrifugal fan on it.

    So your fallback if you want something like the Minisforum ITX board with a laptop Phoenix soldered onto it is an Asrock Lightning ITX motherboard with a desktop 8500G/8600G/8700G Phoenix on it set to ECO mode in the BIOS. I power mine with a generic picoPSU type power supply in an RGEEK L80S ITX case with an external 12V power brick plugged into it.

    The thermal solution is not the best on these boards, I think they will move to boards that require you to bring your own CPU cooler. https://youtu.be/J94PKdk5Izk?t=281 which is better move. But given the dying of build your own PC, its going to be hard for them to sale this category. They are also behind as aoostar released the mATX first https://aoostar.com/en-au/products/aoostar-amd-ta95hx-9955hx first over 6 months ago.

        not with an additional mobo chipset. But their choice for adding a x870 chipset is a better move than aoostar.

        Their claim of the benefits of putting a laptop processor on a desktop motherboard are illogical. They can't claim the benefits of lower power consumption like only needing a quieter fan, and also claim the benefits of a desktop processor like being able to put a big desktop fan on it. What the latter does is let you configure the power consumption in the BIOS up to desktop level which gives you desktop processing power, but requires a desktop heatsink and fan. With the cTDP in the BIOS able to set it to be either a cool 55W processor or a faster hot 75W one, you get one or the other.

        Since they are laptop processors in a desktop package you get exactly the same choice in the 8500G/8600G/8700G desktop processor because they too can be configured in the BIOS to be either cool or hot and fast just the same. They can be set to 35W (which is actually 43W max) or 65W (which is actually 86W).

        What the benefits of that board actually is is that the Minisforum (and any other manufacturers who buy CPUs in large quantities) can get the equivalent processor in a laptop package and solder it to the board cheaper than them buying an AM5 socket and soldering it in, then the buyer going to a retail store and buying a single desktop CPU. Its not better, its just cheaper for the equivalent end performance.

    These use to be good value but I'm not sure they still are with am5 platform costs down (aside from ram ofc). E.g. a rough equivalent to the 775i se:
    - b650 itx motherboard: $224 with code
    - ryzen 7700: $205 from Ali
    - low profile cooler including fan (minisforum is byo): $29

    Totals $458, but you get a socketed CPU with the ability to upgrade to zen 6, regular dimms (faster, more available and usually cheaper than sodimm), and a stable motherboard platform from a known manufacturer.

    Bought a BD795i SE off AliExpress for around this price and it's been pretty good. Main issue was that it arrived without the mounting brackets needed to attach the cpu fan. But the seller was able to source them and posted them to me.

    Other thing to note is the Bios is pretty basic and not as configurable as desktop PC's. You can't create or save different profiles. And it can't read XMP ram profiles so you're stuck on standard JEDEC speeds and timings, even if you buy chips with faster speeds / lower latency listed on the label.

    I ended up locking my cpu to its base speed which improved temps and lowered fan speeds so it's relatively quiet. Have it in a smallish 9L Metalfish T60 case (in volume that's still twice the size of the new Steam Machine).

    I'm using the BD795i SE variant. No complaints in terms of performance, its amazing value.

    However, the BIOS is bad. It lacks a dedicated boot menu hotkey, lacks XMP, and also lacks support for compatibility boot.

    What sort of case would you be putting these in? I'm very interested in a Steam Machine, but like OP am expecting further delays. The issue is usually finding a comparable case and PSU. The Steam Machine is attractive to me due to its form-factor, and whilst I know sandwich cases exist, by the time a full build is done it's going to be well north of the expected price of a Steam Machine.

    Either way, I'm interested, but the cases are the sore spot for me.
