  • Anyone using these 1.5v li-ion batteries in lights?

    I'm gonna need some new rechargeable AAs for my zebralight headlamp soon and this might be an interesting alternative to eneloops, so long as they don't mess up the light

    • These step down to 1.5v.

      So what I'll do is keep pushing 1.5v until it just dies completely, instead of slowly going dimmer as you go.

    • Won't mess up the light though the main advantage is the constant 1.5v output. Prob not such a big deal for your torch as the LED driver will compensate somewhat for the lowering voltage of NiMH, but will work well nonetheless if the higher cost doesn't matter.

      They are great in things that prefer the higher voltage (motors etc). I use them in my ZigBee locks

      • Cool, that's what I figured. The squarer voltage drop may actually be a downside as there's gonna be less warning the battery is dying; I saw XTAR do a AA version that has a deliberate 1.1v step down at 90% discharge which would be a nice feature.

        Mostly I just like the idea of a higher capacity batt in the same form factor, and that the charger is way more compact than my old NiMH 4 cell unit.

        • Yeh I'd definitely recommend the ones with the low voltage indicator otherwise they just go from 1.5V to 0V (maybe not so critical for a torch I guess, but I don't want to get caught out by my door locks)

          Just note they rate these in mWh not mAh like NiMH. 3600mWh is sort of equivalent to a 2000mAh NiMH in capacity (might be a little more, can't quite remember. I did some tests a while back, on paper the cell should be about 2400mAh but there would be conversion loss etc)

          • @bamzero: Xtar has 3 variants with differing voltage curves.

            One of them mimics alkaline cells although i dont see the point except for devices which need to show lowering battery gauge from start to finish.

          • @bamzero: I mostly use my headlamp for night climbing sessions. I always take a spare battery or two, but it would suck pretty hard to have the thing suddenly die as I'm trying to get over the top of a boulder haha.

            Good note on the capacity measurements too. I noticed that as well, and figured that these are really only 10-20% higher capacity than what my old batts are rated at (although I doubt they're anywhere near that now either).

  • Can you use these charger to charge Eneloops?

    • According to one of the reviews of the product only XTAR li-ion only:

      • Charger can't be used with other AA or AAA Li-ion batteries, at least that's what the manual states, and I'm not willing to test it out as the manual indicates that trying to charge non XTAR 1.5V Li-ion batteries "may cause damage to both the batteries and the charger". It would definitely have been preferable if the charger also worked with non XTAR Li-ion AA/AAA batteries, as having a proprietary charger for such common battery sizes seems a bit odd in the tech world we now live in, if you later require more AA/AAA Li-ion batteries, you will either have to stick with XTAR branded ones that will work with this charger, or purchase another brand of batteries, along with another charger in order to charge them.
      • These type of batteries charge at 5V.

        Xtar does have chargers that will do both though, the LC8 is one if I remember right.

        • L8 and BC8 support both Li-ion and Ni-MH, LC8 only supports Li-ion.

  • FYI those "XTAR Online" AA are not actually XTAR and i think quality would be a bit lower.They are way cheaper here for 8 pack without a charger $33.99 https://www.amazon.com.au/XTAR-Rechargeable-AA-8PC-3600/dp/B…

    All the other XTAR AA variants are much more expensive.

    • Yeh, not sure whats up with the Xtar Online brand but they are all being sold by the same "XTAR direct" seller.

      They are listed on here which claims to be an official XTAR store.

  • Are these like subprime eneloops or something?

  • Would I be right in saying that because they quote in mWh instead of mAh, at 1.5V the AA's would be 2400mAh (compared to 1900mAh for Eneloops) and AAA's would be 800mAh (same as Eneloop)?

    Are they otherwise comparable? I bought some Kratax AAA Li-ion rechargeables (1100mWh) for a Philips Hue Indoor Motion Sensor once, but I feel like they drain really quickly.

    • Yes you are correct mathematically. mAh = mWh / V. 3600/1.5=2400. Assuming they are telling the truth about what these can hold (having never heard of them I can’t say how reputable they are, some cheap batteries are unscrupulous in their lying about how much charge they can deliver.)

    • working voltage is different, compare Wh for total energy.

  • Can I put imuto rechargeable lthium batteries into the XTAR charger and vise versa?

    • my guess is you can, since both use same type of battery. but dont take my word for it.

  • Is it a good idea to charge these batteries in an enclosed box, compared to other open chargers?
