Not really,I get the joke but the Beta is a waterproof shell which is designed exactly for that scenario (wearing over an insulation layer like a puffer)

I have used one of these over a good base layer for snowboarding for years. I run hot so get very sweaty, but not with this it breathes amazingly well, and with a good base layer it is warm enough for me here and in NZ. If I was in Japan or anywhere else super cold I would put a mid layer on in between.
I snowboarded for a full day in the rain at Falls Creek and stayed toasty and dry the entire time. This jacket did not wet out at all. Amazing gear.
Beta is a membrane shell, protects you from wind and rain, while goretex membrane (or whatever they use these days) allows some air out so you don't overheat. No insulation.
Designed for mountaineering, absolutely not needed in your daily life.
Macpac Halo is a down jacket, maybe a bit warmer than your typical puffer jacket.

Goretex is an amazing material, but you can buy lesser-known brands for way cheaper.
It is a quality jacket, but most won't even use it to climb a mountain for its actual intended use.
Depnds what you are using it for. If you want something to keep you warm from the carpark into the westfield food court then arcteryx is a flex. This model is aimed at hiking and climbing, if i was hanging off a cliff face in extreme weather or hiking in an isolated place in the wet, id prefer this over a macpac. Its serious kit for serious situations, people that use it for fashion arent their primary target but i am sure they will take the money.
Can someone explain Arc'teryx to me? Is it meant to be designer or do they have some waterproofing patent?
I've only ever heard it mentioned in a couple of drill songs out of the UK so I'm inferring the brand is part of flex culture.

Far from designer and by no means a flex. It's GORE-TEX so isn't proprietary. What it is, is grossly overpriced. It's just another dime-a-dozen, hiking brand.
My partner's dad worked for Coleman and got free gore-tex. NGL I thought goretex was like the aliexpress brand of arc'teryx… Learn something new everyday

Not saying they are not overpriced, but it really is good gear. I used this jacket for years snowboarding and it was better than everything else I tried by a large margin. They use the latest versions of Goretex, not just the basic Gortex branded fabric (there is a lot of difference). They just breath really well, never seem to ever wet out like my Macpac gear, never tear or wear out even after being washed again and again.
No they are not for everyone, but if you are a "buy it once" type person, there IS value in them. That said I avoid paying full price for them.
The gear is great quality. Well made, good fit, works very well and has a great warranty.
I understand people freaking out about the price but it's very good.
Arc'teryx was a Canadian company used to design and make some hardcore mountaineering & hiking gear. Beta is their probably most well known line of goretex shells (rain and wind protection).
In early 2000's was sold to Salomon, these days owned by Anta Sports - Chinese sporting goods conglomerate.
Since change of ownership pivoted to position themselves as a 'streetwear' brand, basically went the same route as The North Face - now it's a cool kids brand.
Quality is still great, prices are still steep as hell, but now it's more often seen in Westfield than on Appalachian Trail.

It's just an airport flex. They admittedly look quite nice and very distinctive when new, but they get dinged up very easily and look like arse after a few trips.
