  • Worth the upgrade from an m1pro 2022 model? My speakers just decided to stop working last week lol

    • I think it depends on your tasks. If you do a lot of video editing then perhaps it worth an upgrade. But if most of the tasks are word/excel/ppt and even light coding at universities, i would say pls save the money for something else - you will not see a significant improvement. Most of my friend bought a new version of macbok, not because of performance, but because their m1 macbook died after 5 years.

But do regularly back your data.

      • I haven't heard this before "their m1 macbook died after 5 years". Can you give more details of what happened? We still use a 10+ year old mac.

        • Do you think your experience of using a 10+ year old mac is the experience of the majority of people?

Do you believe the majority of macs older than 10 years old are still working? Still in use?

There is are multiple reasons why people buy new computers. One of them is hardware failure after the warranty period.

          Another is lack of support..

          • @jason andrade: I run a medium sized business, and we have more than a dozen +10 year old Macs that are still running fine. Just annoying that they cannot be updated to the latest operating system now.

The old spinning hard drives seem like the only things that fail, any of the SSD solid state Macs seem to just go on forever. Older Macs are fine, but make 100% sure your Time Machine backups are working fine for when they do kick the bucket.

    • Doesn't look like rocket science to repair them. Do headphones still work?

      • Yeah bluetooth and headphones work; it's bizarre.

One night I was watching youtube then got this "Audio renderer failed. Restart Computer" error, no audio or video would play at all - even offline media.

It hasn't since. Apparently it could be countless reasons but it's more pointing towards hardware related since I've tried all software solutions.

Sucks because for its age I've kept it in immaculate condition - I would repair it myself but I'm not game enough lol

        • Take it to a Genius Bar, they might be able to diagnose if it’s hardware or software , and if it’s software then it might be a reinstall …..

    • CPU and GPU would be a decent upgrade. However almost double the single core performance your everyday tasks would be a breeze.
      Speaker and Display: Big downgrade.
Battery: Huge upgrade, as the swap of a Pro chip to a normal base chip.

Personal experience of switching from M1 Pro MBP to an M4 MBA last year.

    • Biggest bottleneck of your laptop is the 16GB of RAM (I am assuming you don't have the 32gb model), so IMO doesn't make sense to upgrade to this unless you have a specific requirement and not just general performance increase.

    • I went from an M2 8GB to M4 16GB and its a world of difference, just pull the trigger you wont be let down.

    • Do you watch a lot of media or do photo stuff ?

Pros screens are a lot better. Plus native hdmi, sd card etc.

If you do t need that, yes it’s a great speed upgrade.

For speakers, just throw a Bluetooth headset on when out, and add in some “cheap” desktop speakers for $100 and you’ll be sweet.

M1pro still very very capable for every day stuff.

    • Can I ask, do you get sound / audio if you use headphones/ AirPods?

      • Yeah I do; it's something to do with the "audio renderer failing". Possibly hardware related failure or damage to the audio cable or micro-solder

    • I'd wait next year

  • I've been holding out for a new mac mini, might just give in and buy this.

    • Same. Nobody seems to have a Mac mini or Mac studio.

      • I would like to get one as well, to do something with openclaw.

        • Skip openclaw and go to hermes

  • Worth the ~550 premium over the Neo? Partner wants a new laptop, and the jump from 950 for the 8/512 Neo to this feels like a lot (apparently).

    • Craps all over the Neo, remember the Neo is just an iphone chip with 8GB. Im putting money on that there will be millions of 2 year old Neos for sale like iphones, will be near useless after that time (Unless you just use email and word).

      • (Unless you just use email and word).
I mean yeah this is what a massive % of users actually do.

      • Neo caters for a market , people who don’t own a PC, use the work PC, but their phone is their primary personal internet device , you get better than phone experience, and are in the apple ecosystem, and have an actual keyboard which IPad doesn’t have ….

    • Got a Neo day one, absolutely loving it.

But, two main things contribute to that,
      - I have been Chromebook exclusive for over a decade, so I don't need power or apps
      - I got it for ~720 via the old .edu store, and an additional $70 less via paying with 10% off gift cards, at that. So 650 really.

For 650, I'd say do with it. For 720 even, honestly, probably. Currently the .edu pricing is 750. I don't know if they make you use an .edu email these days admittedly, so this may be moot anyway, but if you got that $750 price, and paid with 10% gift cards (there's a guy on the classifieds here, he's legit, I did mine through him, as have many others), that'd be $675…and at 675, I'd say definitely the Neo is worth it.

For less than half the price (if you get it for 675), I'd go the Neo, unless you really need the extra oomph of the air.

For less than half the price (675/750) against 1500 in this deal, I'd go the Neo unless you really need the oomph of the Air.

950 though? Well, first off, that'd be 50 over RRP, but second, no, the Neo isn't worth a grand.

Edit: Checked, they do want a Unidays account to verify. If you were keen on one of the Neo's for the missus, I can shoot you my UD login. 750 deal loaded fine for me when logged in, could pickup tomorrow or pick delivery. Definitely grab some 10% off cards though, 70 bucks is better in your pocket than Tim Cook's, or whoever took over after him.

    • You can get at least another 3 years extra out of this one over Neo
      Worth every penny

  • 16 ram? Seems excessive

    • The future is now, old man

      • I don’t think anyone who negged me got the joke.

The title was mistyped as “16 RAM” earlier for hours when deal was posted and not 16GB RAM. -_-

        • +1 I like the cut of your jib ;)

  • Is the M5 step-up worth it over this M4 deal? The M4 has the 10 core GPU.

  • 15" is a really good deal

  • on a touchbar 13inch m1 mbp, this worth the upgrade?

    • Not looking at the touchbar everyday would be enough of an upgrade for me

  • With Siri Ais ability to run LLMs locally isn't 24gb ram more ideal?

    • Mors ram will always be better for local ai

  • Typing this on my M3 Macbook air - it's light, solid, does everything I need, and just works.

Would love to get an M5 Macbook air, but honestly, wouldn't be able to appreciate any difference in my use case scenario.

    • considered upgrading as I'm currently on an 8gb model, but works fine so decided against it.

    • You probably won't notice any speed difference, but my wife swapped from M2 or 3 (cant remember) to a M5 and the battery life seemed way better.

  • Any likelihood of Officeworks, JB or even Apple matching this?

    • You could try, considering you need a membership at Costco I doubt they honour it.

    • No chance.

  • 13” $1550 delivered. Just opened up. Looks like all colours.

  • wholesale member only. otherwise $1550 after online discount.

    • online is for members as well, includes delivery.

  • Would they have sales on M3 or M4? Seems better value than M5

  • is it 1499 instore?

    • yes

    • No online too. Add to cart.

  • Gone down to $1499 inc delivery online now… have to try and get $50 back later…

  • I price matched at TGG and they sent me a link to pay. Used gc for another 5% off

    • Hey mate ..
Could ya send us the invoice so we could try to get that too ?
Tried in JB .. but no luck :(
      Regards

      • Haven't got the invoice yet, and also don't know how to upload lol.

I just jumped on chat and sent them my friend's costco card and 20min later he was happy to do it.

        • Ahh I meant just the screenshot of the link page ..
Tried doing the Costco card thing .. no luck :(

    • Can I ask where you're getting 5% TGG gc? I only know of 4% TGG via Macquarie Marketplace, cheers.

  • Anyone used one of these or a MBP permanently in clamshell mode? Thinking that might be the next best option since no mini's or studio's anywhere.

    • Without a fan I’d be hesitant to use the Air in that capacity (depending on workload) but I’m sure it’s been done.

  • Thanks! Was waiting for a deal! Not sure about all stores but went to one and they only stock one colour, blue in my case. So had to order online

  • Thanks OP , got hold of the midnight black via online purchase.

  • Price matched in store at Good Guys. No hassles. Just asked to show membership card.

Had 10% ultimate gift cards on hand. Final price of $1619.10. Upgraded from a 2019 MacBook Pro, pretty much so I can run local AI models for meeting summaries 🤣. Thanks OP.

    • @itsmiffy - could you pls tell which goodguys store is this?

      • Any good guys should it seems.

    • How many gift cards can you use in TGG?

      • Don’t appear to be a limit. Just had to set up on a till and do $50 at a time.

  • Thanks OP.

The Good Guys honored the price match- however I've noticed on my Commbank yelo at the moment there is discount on E-GiftCards (5% for TGG)

It says maximim $2000 so surely I could just load it with $1799 (paying $1710) and use that to purchase the macbook? Theres no max per transaction or something is there?

  • we pay more for the same thing as time passes, this was 1400ish with air pod pro 3 few months ago, same as ps5 base with a game was 599 in december, pro w as 999 with a game, now base is 999 and pro 1399 without a game, usually the thought process is prices drop for electronics of the same model as time passes, but not its the opposite now

    • Was it the Apple back to uni deal and use stacked Apple gift cards (to get the extra 10% off). If so, it's more like ~$1450 + $190 for AirPods Pro 3 (or get AirPods 4 w/ active noise cancellation). For people who didn't want the AirPods 4 with ANC, then technically AOU + Apple gift cards (10% off) was cheaper.

PS5 base, technically, without a game, but with TCB cashback, all time low was under $500 (and that was the disc version) though that cashback you need to wait 6 months.

However, the reality is both Sony and Apple wanted to take advantage of their RAM and NAND flash contracts (to rub it in on Microsoft (for XBox) and PC makers). It was a pity GTA 6 was delayed for a year. My guess is Sony bought those RAM and NAND flash contracts in anticipation for GTA 6.

Micron hinted it was Apple's aggressive pricing / purchasing of RAM and NAND that led to this. The margin was so low for RAM and NAND makers for years, they couldn't invest in more fabs. Apple is also responsible for the current situation (according to Micron) by aggressively buying RAM and NAND, leaving very little for others. Let's be frank, Micron (and the other two) are no saints either. They too killed competition a few years ago.

    • Also, we are looking at FOMO purchases. People who really need these would have bought them before. PS5 for me was $50 pre-order deposit + traded in my PS4 Pro + some games and I got that PS5 on launch day.

The reality is Apple has achieved what it wanted, expanding the user base (and once you are in the Apple ecosystem, it takes really strong will power to resist buying more). These base models are not what most of us want. The hope to get cheap Mac Mini with M5 Pro with a large amount of RAM for AI is now extinguished. People will need a deep pocket for that setup.

  • no more stock from Costco…

  • got the air for 1799 coming in august 3rd, solid deal

  • Costco Epping has very few MacBook Air 13 M5/16/512 left, as of 20 mins ago. Blue only.

  • Hi guys, I had placed a delivery online order with TGG for $1597 + delivery. Its still stuck in processing order but the payment has been taken. I also notice the costs have increased but the items are in stock. What are my options here? Do I wait for cancellation or shipping? Is there a number to call and check as I cant find when googling it.

    Thanks
