[Skye Club] Penna Lane 'Side Track' Old Vine Grenache 2023 - $162 / Dozen Delivered @ Skye Cellars

PENNA

Hey guys, thought I’d post something a bit different today, as I rarely see Old Vine Grenache discounted like the usual Shiraz, and/or Cabernet deals.

Why try a Grenache?
If you usually stick to heavy Barossa Shiraz, this is a great chance to try something different. High-quality Grenache is a lighter, mid-weight style-highly aromatic, vibrant, and great with food without being overly heavy.

Personal Note & Pedigree:
A friend of mine bought the 2022 vintage of this previously via Vinomofo and was really happy with it. They opened a bottle last night to check on it: nicely balanced mid-weight wine, dark fruit (as opposed to the more common red fruits/raspberry for Grenache) and some mineral characters. The flavour profile is similar to the iconic Clarendon Hills wines, just without being as heavy.

While I'd expect this 2023 on offer to be a bit more fruit-forward, the pedigree here is serious for a sub-$14 bottle. The debut 2021 vintage of this exact wine pulled a massive 94 points from Gary Walsh at The Wine Front. Getting Blewitt Springs fruit from historic 90+ year-old vines (planted in 1930) at this price point is excellent value.

The Details:

Wine: 2023 Penna Lane 'Side Track' Grenache

Fruit: Single historic vineyard in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale (Grand Cru sub-region for Aussie Grenache).

Vine Age: Exceptional heritage rootstock planted in 1930 (90+ year old vines).

Vinomofo historical clearance (2022 vintage): ~$17.50/btl

  • Big grenache fan so I went and pulled a 2022 Side Track out of a dozen I was allowing to age.

If happy with the 2022 when I drink it this evening, I will jump on this.

The reference to Blewitt Springs being Grand Cru for Aus Grenache is so true.

    • Keen to hear your thoughts on the 22 when you open it.

    • What did you think

      • Did not met my expectations which were perhaps set too high. I would have like a little more body (not a fan of light Grenache) but not a failure or reason not to buy. My better half with the far better palate immediately commented on a bit of an odd back palate taste. I agree with her on that, but it was more of an issue for her.

At $13.50 I not saying do not buy but with an existing 2022 dozen (less one) I will not be buying more.

Perhaps Penna Lane should stick to Riesling.

        • Interesting and totally different to my mate's thoughts on the same vintage! That's wine for you!

          • @ultrakaos: We all taste things differently and wine can be inconsistent..

Like your friend, I found it with body and it was not a light raspberry drink. Maybe the minerality was seen at my end as a slightly metallic back palate?

No regrets on buying the 2022 Penna Lane which like this offering was at an excellent price point.
