  • A starter box for someone else. Set up a friend or family member with their own server, or hand one off as a gift. Half off makes it an easy yes.
  • Offsite backups. Put a second Unraid box at a friend's place or the office. If something bad happens on one, your copy is safe offsite.
  • Split your workloads. Keep storage and backups quiet and reliable on one box, and let the other run hot for Plex transcodes, local AI, game servers, and VMs.

  • Anyone looking to buy, can benefit from the buy second for 50% off. I am looking to buy the starter.

    • I'm keen!

    • Also keen if anyone else wants to do a 2x

    • I am considering purchasing an Unleashed license, but I haven't made a final decision yet.

    • Count me in too

  • What great timing! I just 3d printed a 6 bas NAS and connected it to a thinkcentre m720q and was trialling out unraid. It's been awesome.

    • mind sharing more? is there a printables link?

      • I'm sure it's on printables as well, but I grabbed it on makerworld. It's called a ThinkNAS. It's such a great concept. I built it up over the past month, parts from China/AliExpress came in 5-6 days. It's a bit tricky to get all the cabling work to not touch the back fan, but after that it's great. The bay's hinges are a little crappy and dont sit as flush as I'd like (Going to reprint them in a little bit)

        https://makerworld.com/en/models/1737570-thinknas-6x-hdd-nas…

I got my thinkcentre on ebay, $220 with 16gb of ram, which was my main need. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/406945563262?
OOS now, but you can find a bunch similarly priced.

One thing to note, if you get the sata expander card for the pcie slot, you wont be able to use the SSD in the thinkcentre. It makes it impossible to close the case etc. So you either need to use an m2 on the otherside (or get an m2 sata expander, probably would have done that knowing what I know now)

Or not use the SSD at all, I run unraid on a sandisk usb drive.

Also the thinkcentre I grabbed doesn't have wifi. So something to be concious of as well if you do this :)

        • This is awesome - thanks for sharing

        • mate thanks, this now has me down a fun rabbit hole

  • Does this discount apply to the 'Lifetime' licence?

The starter and unleashed are only 12 months of updates right?

    • Discount is only applied for starter or unleashed, however you can purchase a Lifetime & then bundle in one of those licences at 50% off.

      • Thanks for confirming.

I just looked it up and Lifetime upgrade is an extra $150 USD (~$220 AUD) on top of unleashed.
So that's about $345 AUD total. Big oof

yeah nah… for that money I'll keep running drivepool + snapraid. It's only ~$45-90 AUD and includes ongoing updates.

  • Damn, will only consider a discount on lifetime. I’m trying to reduce subscriptions, not increase them. At around $361, I’ll go with TrueNAS instead.

Still haven’t bought the hardware yet though, so all up in the air for me at the moment.

    • You don't have to update yearly tbh. Could just buy a renewal every 2 years or so. Almost 10 years before the lifetime is paid off then :p

I like unraids array building more than truenas.

      • Yeah I thought about that and did similar quick math in my head, the problem is if I'm hosting family photos / other personal documents, I know it's unlikely but ideally I want the the most up-to-date security patches and bug fixes. Don't care for new features.

        • I reckon your bigger risks there are less OS update risks, more so the updates from the software you'll use for it. e.g. Immich.

          • @pisoj1: Not sure I agree. I reckon the OS would be way more vulnerable than the apps running on it.

The lack of updates is the whole reason why you don't take Windows XP/7 on the internet anymore.

          • @pisoj1: @pisoj1 I think both are equally applicable here. Apps have have unknown future updates (but choosing wisely would ideally result in me choosing projects that are contributed into the future). Subscribing for one year becomes a known end-date for update/patches.

What I want to avoid is a series of vulnerabilities being picked up (especially with the increase in security-based AI LLMs) and I'm forced to pay to update/patch.

            • @Apostle0748: Fair point! Honestly terrifying to think of AI compute being able to just break into anything lol

    • I was all ready to buy Unraid a few years ago to coincide with setting up a new NAS, right as they decided to increase the price of lifetime, so I went with TrueNAS instead. Being a new build anyway I wasn't limited by the ZFS pool requirements, and Docker support isn't an issue any more either.

Funnily enough I was also ready to buy lifetime Plex and we all saw what happened with that, motivated me to work around free Plex's limitations though so now instead of some money they get no money.

  • nice deal, definitely recommend an offsite backup as RAID is not redundancy.

Many options to do the backing up securely:
    - Borg
    - Restic
    - Kopia
    - …

Now if only ram & hard drive prices would come back down to Earth.

    • RAID is literally redundancy, it's part of the name. However it's not a backup.

      • Hah that's what I meant.

        Thanks

  • Would suggest removing CasaOS from the alternatives since it hasn't been updated for almost a year now.

CasaOS is now unmaintained since they pushed everyone to ZimaOS. AFAIK the free upgrade to ZimaOS+ is now over, but is $29 lifetime which is somewhat reasonable.

    • I've updated post to replace CasaOS with ZimaOS.

  • also worth considering HexOS runs on top of TrueNAS

    • Why would someone pay $200 - $300 for hexos if TNS is free?

  • Be aware if you're thinking of splitting a license. Unraid's licensing system makes it impossible to split a bundle. Both keys get permanently locked to the buyer's single email and Unraid Connect account.

The biggest issue is that Unraid relies on its Connect API for cloud integration and remote access. Because the licenses are linked, your server would be tied to the account architecture. If you wanted to use Unraid Connect for remote monitoring or full WebGUI access over the internet, it would route through the master account.

On top of that, if your USB drive ever fails, the replacement key can only be retrieved from the master account, which means you'd be locked out of your server until it's manually fixed for you.

Because of all those technical and privacy risks, it's definitely best to not split.

  • Got 2 since previous. Got 2 more today. When i put in 2. I somehow managed by removing and reading in my cart 1 starter and 1 unleashed for us $93.70. believe I put unleashed in first. And then another one and one starter. Then I removed the first unleashed and got second unleashed 50% off.
I got one lifetime since previous. Just too bad no discount ever on those.
