[NSW, QLD, SA] SolarMax: $0/kWh 11am-2pm, $0.165/kWh 12am-6am, $0.15/kWh FiT 6-9pm for First 30kWh @ CovaU

The SolarMax plan from CovaU is similar to the older OVO EV plans in its tariff structure (free 3 hours during the day + 16.5c/kWh for EV charging at night) but with a reasonable FiT (15c/kWh) for those with Battery systems during peak hours (6pm-9pm, capped at 30 kWh). The plan is also good for solar export with its 5c/kWh (uncapped) FiT for the other times.

For my usage and solar battery system performance during winter, this plan should work out to be better than Globird's Four4Free plan/Hero Zero with the added flexibility of overnight usage for a pool pump or EV charging during low solar yielding days.

For reference, the SolarMax plan rates (inc GST) for my premise on the Endeavour Network in NSW:

Daily Supply Charge: 167.992c/day
Free Usage: 0-50 kWh - 0c/kWh, >50kWh - 38.533c/kWh.
EV Off-Peak: 16.5c/kWh
Peak: 46.31c/kWh
Off Peak: 38.533c/kWh

Note: Any feed in credit generated can't be redeem for cash as per the CovaU's solar contract. You will be better off with other retailer such as Globird or AGL Battery Rewards Plan if you are a net exporter that get a credit bill every time.

  • CovaU wins if you have Gas too.

    • How come?

      • CovaU's Solar MAX plan gives you cheap EV charging rate from 0~6am, 16c (I know its expensive than AGL EV Plan)
        3 hours free usage upto 50kWh everyday, Solar FiT 15c 6~9pm and 5c at all other hours. Gas is cheaper than Globird and similar to AGL gas.

    Worth noting their 'Peak' time here is 3-9pm which means not getting slugged as Peak for late evening and early morning heater/AC use which I'm excited for

      • I switched from AGL because the breakeven point was around 17kw/day on my new plan (8c for the first 8kw then 2c) which I'd be exceeding 10 months of the year. Also it was really nice running the heater for 3 hrs today

    • Yes, thanks for highlighting this as it makes this plan a hard NO for net credit households. I'll add this to the post. It is explicitly stated in their solar contract. I also have CovaU gas so it does help offset any small credit I may have pretty quickly.

  • I'm a bit of a rookie when it comes to the feeding power back into the grid from battery stuff, but could anyone please help with a basic question?

    Essentially, is the best way to use a plan like this to charge the battery during the free window and then feed that energy back into the grid during the time where you get the highest feed in tariff? Assuming of course you don't need to use it during then?

    Ie. Charge the battery up between 11-2pm for free, then feed back into the grid from your battery between 6-9pm when the FIT is 15 cents? Is that doable?

    • yep, exactly what I do with globird

    • Yep exactly, along with charging via your own solar.

      It doesn't really work out as a profit making enterprise due to the wear on your battery, but as a little bonus while limiting your own consumption it can be worth doing.

    • Pretty much. It's worth noting this plan has 5c feed in at all times. So you're best off charging fast and hard in the free period so you can start exporting as soon as possible.

      I'm generally close to 0 net usage, but use Alot over night charging a car.
      So this plan actually works out better for me as I can get 30kwh in from the grid, then feed it back via solar at 5c and get enough to offset my costs while having the whole battery available to cover my own use.

    • Since you asked, Endeavour NSW, CovaU vs Globird Zero Hero

      Overnight (12am–6am): new 16.5c vs your 46.2c/57.2c → new far cheaper
      Morning (6am–11am): new 38.53c vs your 46.2c/57.2c → new cheaper
      Afternoon peak (3pm–9pm): new 46.31c vs your peak 57.2c → new cheaper (or roughly level if that's your shoulder)
      Evening (9pm–12am): new 38.53c vs your 46.2c/57.2c → new cheaper

      So once the free window is a wash, the new plan beats your current rates in essentially every remaining band.

      RE Zero Hero

      it doesn't outweigh paying 46–57c instead of 16.5–38.5c across all your other hours. On feed-in, the new plan is also better for a solar owner (5c across the whole day plus 15c evening, vs your 0c export during the 11pm–4pm midday-solar window).

      If you have a battery, but still rely on the grid at some times, this deal outweighs the $1 claw back.

  • Not a bad plan and pricing at all; this is almost better than my globird plan, but the $1 credit from globird really make it a lot better for me. With globird I'm currently not exporting much to the grid due to winter and less sunlight, (so we're using more). To match the average daily cost with globird, I'd need to export about 5.5kw per day with CovaU, though once it's sunnier and easier to charge during the day, globird will probably be even further ahead

    • The $1 claw back is good, if you can solely rely on no grid usage during off peak, peak and shoulder. Otherwise it's moot.

      • You only need to not worry about no grid usage during the peak time (6-8pm or 6-9pm depending when you signed up) in order to get the $1 back. Apart from that you can use the grid as much as you want - it makes it so much easier since we just have to worry about not using grid power for a couple of hours during the evening for that $1. Thankfully for our battery system, it's easy enough to do, so we've been getting that credit back daily

          • @athk: That's just during peak time though, right? Where I am, the 2 hour peak time between 6pm-8pm is a little cheaper than that, but the rest of the time it's not that expensive. Of course if you use electricity during the peak time from the grid you lose out on the $1 credit, but using grid power during the shoulder doesn't completely ruin the $1/day credit

              • @athk: Sheesh, that's quite expensive. Since the July 1 increase, our peak is only $0.42 so far. The funny thing is though that for us, even with how much the shoulder price is, and how using it throughout the day isn't ideal for pricing, it's still cheaper than other battery plans that have come out for us, so we're sticking with Globird for now

                  Overnight top ups of the battery (EV Off Peak) would be more beneficial than paying $0.42 on the off occasion you need it?

                  This is really dependant on your usage, I have a 32kWh battery, I end up with around 50% after 9pm which flows through to 11am when it tops up again. If I'm charging the EV over night that battery is gone by morning, so topping up at 16c is WAY cheaper than 0.46.

                  • @athk: Ah, I think the difference for us is that we don't have an EV yet, which would really make the difference I think.

                    I've ignored peak time because I've never used it so for my use case it's irrelevantvery (though CU is quoting me $0.49555 vs $0.506 for the new globird - sorry I think the other day I may have accidentally looked at the old price when I mentioned it).

                    I have a 42kw battery. During summer when we got it installed (Feb), I was exporting about 7kw per day on average. As we got closer to winter, I've dropped that down to roughly 4kw, and now in the middle of winter, because of our hot water system and less sun, I've made it have no exports just so we can power until the solar eventually kicks in, followed by 11am free power.

                    Most days I don't use much grid power - the most I've ever used is 9kw two days recently when we had people over and barely any sun. During days where we import a lot of power, CovaU is better for us. But for most days, if we don't export anything and barely use any power (worst case for middle of winter), globird has me at $0.738 per day, whereas CovaU is at $1.52 per day. As I export more, CovaU does catch up, but for low usage globird is better; 0kw import with 4kw export (early winter) has globird at $0.34 vs $0.92 for CU, and summer (0kw import and 7kw export) has globird at $0.04 vs $0.47

                    For medium import (5kw), CU is cheaper by $0.15 when I have high export (7kw), so only during summer. I had a very quick look and I think there might be 2 or 3 days where we had more than 5kw of import, so in this case globird wins again.

                    Where CU does constantly win though is for higher imports - at 10kw imports per day, CU wins for any level of export, and as you go for more imports, CU gets better. However as I said, so far since we don't have an EV yet, we've only managed to hit 9kw twice as a rare situation.

                    I did a test since the start of June (when we started to get less sun and more usage due to people staying with us) and comparing the new globird pricing (even though June was still the old price, I used the new one to get an idea) to CU, I'm $12 better with globird compared to CU. Of course there are some days (7) where I'm better off with CU but the best of those cases was only $0.49 better under CU, so the savings didn't outweigh globird. I will say though that we do have a hot water system on a timer, which we could make activate during the EV charging time, which might help even more on those days we do have usage, but it doesn't happen too often. I think while it would help towards CU, I still think globird ends up better. Also since the start of June, I've had 13 days where we've used power from the grid, and of those (out of 37) and have averaged an import of 5kw for those days. If we used that much each day instead of every third day, CU might be more tempting.

                    Also I ran some numbers for fun to see at what usage CU wins over globird. It looks like for 0 exports, globird wins until I consistently import 6.74kw per day. For 4kw exports, globird wins until 5.02kw imported per day. And for 7kw of exports, globird wins until 3.76kw. For our usage, I don't think we'll have that many days consistently to make CU worth it. That said, we do want to get an EV, and when we do we'll probably start to have enough usage to make it worth it, but until then, I think globird is still the winner for us

                      • @athk: No worries - I think for most people if they use quite a bit of grid power then you're right about CU being better for them, but if they can get away with using their battery most days globird might help more depending on usage.

                        Also this was good too because when I looked at the deal the other day, I only tried the numbers with couple of days of usage but didn't do a full depth thing - none of the random days had CU being better so I stopped there. But it was good to do a check just in case there was something I missed that did make it better than globird, and now that I know what conditions make CU better, I know what to keep an eye out for once we get an EV/if our usage increases, along with all the breakpoints for it!

  • 50kwh import not enough for winter

    • Is it winter yet?
      We're pulling about 35-40 kwh per day at the moment.

    • 50kwh within 3 hours though…?

      • 10-15kw inverter battery charging + house load (ev charge etc)

        • Different circumstances I guess, how many would be peak charging their EV midday? Plus generally if your system is generating any solar that difference comes off what you import from the grid.
          With a 3 phase setup thought it would be easy to hit that number I guess (I'm single phase so limited to 10kw import)

      • 12kw inverter with 4hfree from GloBird = 48kwh. Plus house load can easiliy go up to 70kwh in that 4 hours.

      • I’m averaging 60 in June. I’ve got three phase power and I’m on the 4 hr GloBird plan.

        Charge battery in cloudy day - 10kW
        Charge EV - 11kW
        Shifted load - 5 kW (pool and washer etc)
        Warm the house now so I don’t need to at night - 7kW

        Adds up, that’s not every day but I did once pull 100kWh of free power…

    • FYI you're getting downvoted because that really isn't a valid reason to neg. this is absolutely a deal for me, idc about redeeming credit for cash since i use enough to know my bill will never be zero.

      • It's a bad plan for most battery owners these days. It's bad practice to have no credits paid out. I think it's perfectly valid to neg anti consumer behaviour. Globird with it's $1 daily bonus is better for most

        • this is a better deal for me, and many others, than globird. your neg should reflect whether or not you think the deal is an actual deal (which it clearly is), not the "behaviour" of the company.

          • @harro112: It is an issue with the actual deal. The way the wholesale electricity market works, they're making a premium which they keep. Bad deal AND bad retailer behaviour that should not be rewarded.

  • They're really pumping up that daily charge fee, huh. $2.69 in my Essential Energy area. Currently paying $1.32 with Red Energy.

    • Regional NSW prices are a disgrace. If I moved the house 10km over the border and into the ACT it'd be $1.17 per day. Thank you Essential Energy and NSW government.

  • For me (solar, no battery) their Freedom plan comes out better. Because the feed in bonus here is at 6-9pm which is a shit time + their usage fees and daily charge is high, their other plan ends up coming out as cheaper.

    • Im in the same situation - no battery, has solar, export 30kwh per day on average. What would you recommend? Currently with agl solar plan.
      I checked covau, they showed me a demand fee for the freedom plan (23.311) which scared me.

  • Yeh, I jumped on this deal also. Worth noting their app/portal is a bit broken for SolarMax plan currently (doesn't have the correct windows for usage, so everything gets estimated based on offpeak/peak imports, and only the daytime FIT). Apparently they are working on fixing it though.

  • It's amazing the mental load people have to put into "managing" their home power usage just to have bills 100% more than 10 years ago 🤣

    Imaging having to change the timer on your pool pump on a daily basis based on the weather.

    I realise there is probably a way of semi automating a lot of this, but that's another significant investment in itself.

    • You must not have either solar or battery? Not sure about your bills, but my bills now is much less than from 10 years ago and I never had to change my pool timer depending on weather. I let it run more hours now as it'll either be using electricity from my solar during daytime, or from battery or the grid at 16.5c/kWh at night.

      The money I spent on my 6 year old solar system was paid back in 2 years and the battery system will be back in 3. Not so much mental load, just more cash in my pocket.

      • I do actually have solar and yes my bills are actually infinitely higher than they were 10 years ago.

        With a 6.6kw system I used to be basically neutral/maybe a small credit. Now with the same system I'm at about $500-600 a quarter.

        As for your payback period on solar/battery that may be correct, however I do find most people to overestimate their savings, it's mostly due to taxpayers covering about half the cost of your solar system and about 3/4 of the cost of your home battery… So we are now just all paying your power bill though taxes… With interest, because over governments can't balance a budget ;)

          Nice twist saying you have solar… but you are paying to subsidise someone else having solar. I think the flip from possibly credible to of no value comes there.

          • @rooster7777: I do have 2 kids under 8, but they are hardly contributing much to the bill.

            The main difference in cost is clearly the change from about 19c per kwh usage (anytime) and receiving between 15-18c per kWh feed in tariff. To now over 30c per kWh usage (anytime) and receiving 5c per kWh feed in… The daily charge has obviously gone up too… And I'm on a bloody good plan to get those rates too. A lot of people are on time of use tariffs and paying 45c+ per kWh in peak times, which is peak for a reason, it's when everyone's home.

    • My setup had a ROI of under 4 years (using todays average rates), and my annual house + car fuel cost is now $0. Much better than I was doing 10 years ago.

      • The big Asterix there is the 100k~+ that was invested to get you to that point.

    • 10 Years Ago my electricity bill was : $2000 per year + petrol (that's not adjusted for inflation)
      With Solar: Gradually bill went up to about $1500 per year
      Last 6 months with Solar + Battery: $150 credit + no petrol with EV so I'm about $3000 better off per year than I was 10 years ago…

      Not much of a mental load just do the following which is automated: pool pump runs during the day, hot water is heated around noon, charge home battery around noon + from Solar. 🤣

  • vs globird zerohero, wouldn't you be worse off without their $1 daily credit to offset a good portion of the daily charge fee assuming you don't pull from grid outside the free window? if you do, yes this plan works out better but what time is the EV charging window midnight to 6am everyday? can top up battery then at this rate or just EV?

    • Midnight to 6am "EV Hours" is anything on the general meter circuit during that time. Can charge a battery, heat HWS, run the air con, etc.
      Which plan is better year round, depends on your usage patterns and setup.

    • You can do whatever you want from 0~6am at 16c / kwh.

      Plus, free 50kwh between 11am~2pm, better FiT than Globird, Cheaper Gas rate than Globird too.

      All the credits you have earned from FiT, you can use to offset your Gas bill.

      If you don't have Gas at home, stay with Globird Zerohero as this would be better for you. (I'm with Zerohero at the moment but will move to CovaU soon)

      • trying to to use the grid at all to import or export outside of free window and subsist on that for all appliances and EV topups.

        • my battery is 48 and I won't use this to charge EV. I have other things to use this all capacity :) (heaters all night)

          • @Dalgona456: yeah ditto, typically only use battery to top EV up if there's excess capacity before 11am window opens!

        • No, Globird and CovaU similar in NSW as well. Just check their website with your address and see what they are offering.

          • @Dalgona456: In QLD, Covau doesn't let you offset gas with solar credit. Just asked their online chat.

    • Zero hero is better for me financially and I use powershop for my gas (cheapest so far)

      Having said that, it is very limited and needed discipline.

  • Obviously it’s very individualised but zero hero was better for me (27kw of batteries). We basically hammer the grid to charge batteries and charge electric car during the 3 hours and then don’t use the grid.

  • This doesn't seem like a great deal. Peak rates are insanely high, and off-peak rates are still higher than FIT. I'd much prefer Flow Power - 35c or 45c FIT during 5:30 - 7:30 and fluctuating prices based on wholesale demand

    • There is 3 hours middle of the day for free, and EV hours midnight to 6am. Flow doesn't offer these cheap imports, though it has the benefit if high exports for 2 hours. Depends whether someone needs the daily cheap/free imports, or if their solar produces enough to cover all their usage + battery. Similar deal with AGL Battery Rewards plan.

    • no one with solar+battery is drawing anything between 3-9pm. this is great for someone who's battery tends to go flat overnight, so you can recharge for relatively cheap and get yourself through to free period of the next day.

  • OVO has this plan for Melbourne. Works well for non-solar, non-battery houses. Do your laundry and bread making in the 3 hour free time.

    Wonder if there's a way to get a battery, charge off the grid during 3 hours free time to use for the rest of the day?

    I don't use my controlled load anymore. How do I remove it? Ask my current retailer to remove it from my network tariff?

    • Yes through your retailer. There's a cost from your distributor depending if a site visit is required, it costed us around $185 to get it done.

    • Yeah the feed in credit will offset the other things they charge you for, you just can’t cash it out if you end up net positive.
