yea, you can sideload on this. Some apps have been blacklisted by Amazon, so you cannot sideload them.

You can remove and block the blacklist, and also block further firmware updates and install custom launcher. It did it yesterday.
How did you do this while avoiding the firmware updates that happen automatically when you first plug a new device in?

With this model you are completely incorrect.
You CAN stop the initial firmware update.
You CAN block future updates.
You CAN remove Amazon's blacklist and ensure it doesn't return.
You CAN remove Amazon's system app protection.
You CAN install a custom launcher like Projectivy or Emotn.
It is all quite easy to do and the instructions and tools are easy to acquire.
You not knowing how to do a thing doesn't mean it can't be done.

It depends which apps you want to use I guess and whether or not they are on the blacklist. (Or will be put on it soon)
Stopping Amazon from f'ing with your apps through firmware updates is the main reason to do it, I personally like to also use a custom launcher the clean the whole display up and ditch all the Amazon promotional malarkey.

Also, when he says we can stop firmware updates, yes, you can disable it, but even if you do, a strange service occurs when an update is released. A pop-up appears with a 60-second timer that you have to close manually. If you miss it by any chance, it runs, it is updated, and you cannot even stop it

I have bought it at Pre Prime Day sale ($64) and and confirm it's 8.1.3.3, which is older than 8.1.5.3 to use the exploit.
However… I am stuck at the welcome screen as it will download the latest software..
I have unplugged several times now so the 'update' is never completed , but not yet manage to get into the main screen so I can use LM and adb to do what I need.
Got mine today. I was worried too when setting it up per those instructions.
I ended up consulting Gemini and asking it to guide me through the steps to ensure it worked.
The key part for my hardware and network set up was blocking Amazon software updates in Adguard.
Then i went along with the process and it didnt appear to download any updates and progressed to the Amazon login part. I was completely uncertain at this stage because it’s at a limbo somewhere between connecting to wifi/update/login/launcher. Only once I could access the settings from the launcher menu and checked the OS 8.1.3.3 I knew it had not updated.
Got the launcher manager, projectivy, tailscale, jellyfin, smart tube, huarentv, iyftv, iqiyi all working fine.
I have it working too after getting help from a OZB member ( a more relevant YouTube video )
Jellfyfin is available from the Amazon AppStore, is the one sideloaded has features the official one does not have ? ( or just simply not requiring you to update the Jellyfin server version every now and then ?)
@imwayway: I didn't need to sideload Jellyfin, like you say it's available in the app store, it's just among the apps I wanted to put on it.
In fact, I didn't need this fire stick at all, I just got it because it seemed cheap and wanted to test myself to see what all all the chatter about sideloading limitations were about.
Likely I'll give this to the in laws now to watch Chinese tv.

For others: Just finished myself. Got 8.1.3.3 as well. I used the Troypoint guides (2 youtube videos. 1 is to just prevent updating the other is to install the rest) Connected Jellyfin from the app store. Got Smarttube and will try and get the voicecommands working with it. Super stoked. Great device for $45 after cashback!
@amrdeus: So I am yet to receive in depth feedback from the family. I can't read Chinese/other languages, so I struggle to use the apps myself. When I tested it out, I just clicked whatever was on the front pages to see if videos loaded. Ended up watching a bit of Wimbledon on a live stream with chinese commentary which was enough to judge the stream quality as just satisfactory, not excellent but good enough to keep the in-laws happy that it's free.
For a non asian viewer I would suggest you could try those apps to browse but ensure to block in-app purchases just in case you accidentally sign up for something. Good luck.
