Yep, Breville worth the extra $$$ every day of the week.
Comes in stainless "steal" as well.
Is the ninja luxe that bad?
I am leaning towards the ninja due to the automated milk steaming. But longevity seems to be better with Breville.
Wouldn't buy a coffee machine because of automatic milk frothing.
@browser: There is the bambino plus which has auto milk frothing but I wouldn't knock someone for wanting to have coffee without having to manually froth milk.
@ATangk: I meant wouldn't place automatic milk frothing high on the list, it's generally a gimmicky feature — without manual control to tip the milk jug at ideal angle and depth, it simply heats up the milk and makes it bubbly rather than microfoaming.
@browser: Agreed. I have the Breville dual boiler (had it for 5+ years now), and make perfect milk, however, when I head to Melbourne to see family, I use their Nespresso (Breville?) Creatista Pro which does auto milk frothing and no matter what almond/oat (barista) milk brand I use, it always has bubbles. Absolutely annoys me. I've tried playing with the settings too - no luck.
I am one of the heathens who will just do 2 shots of espresso then add a little cold milk and and a little ice. Mainly I just add ice first and let the coffee hit the ice then add 1L cool water (I have a massive mug).
Yes I know it's the most riveting story.
@Kid A: Either a 1L Pyrex jug or my 1L "World's biggest mug for the world's best dad" mug. It looks awesome and has a picture of the world map in black and white. Best $2.50 at an OP shop I've ever spent..
Probably not bad, just that the Breville is more established and proven.
Not bad, but the Breville BES870 is a great machine. I got mine from Costco in 2018 and it's still working fine until I upgraded to a dual boiler one last year, sold for $300 on Marketplace. Decent machine!
Nah the Breville just has a higher ceiling but demands a tad more. The Luxe has a higher floor and is quite straight forward.
Who here has a Choice subscription who can post the ranking?
Both Models are recommended by Choice
Ninja Luxe Cafe Premier Series (ES601):
CHOICE Expert Rating: 82%
Taste test score: 90%
Ease of use score: 74%
Milk frothing score: 60%
Coffee temperature consistency score: 75%
Measured heat-up time: Instantaneous
Time taken to froth 200mL milk: 2 min 44 sec
Good Points
Excellent taste test score.
54mm filter is easy to fill using the automatic grinder. Need to place a large plastic guide ring around it which is awkward but the automatic recommends the the grind size based on the shot dispensing time. The tamper is also metal and has a spring in it making it easy to get a consistent tamper.
Controls are easy to use.
Fills cups evenly, switches off automatically and there's no vibration.
Drip tray full indicator.
In-built grinder.
Can accommodate taller cups easily.
Machine can automatically detect which filter size is being used when inserted into the grinder.
Comes with blind filter for cleaning.
Bad Points
Only OK milk frothing score, froth is a little hard to pour and quite hot using automatic mode. When using manual mode, it struggles to make a lot of foam.
Included instructions only include quick guide with basic diagrams. Need to go online to get the full manual.

Bad Points
None to mention.
Exact same CHOICE rating, the Ninja better tasting coffee and the Breville is better in all other ways? Tough decision.
@Migwell: You’d assume that the reason for wanting a coffee machine is to have good tasting coffee.. if you have good tasting coffee, you forgive a few minor negatives.
It’s hard to enjoy all the good points if the actual coffee produced isn’t enjoyable.
That’s my 2 cents anyway.
@Slave1: Ninja for sure have better taste. My breville worked for almost 4 yeqrs and then I switched to Ninja. Difference is real and I would recommend it over breville.
@Migwell: I have my concerns about choices taste ranking here. The extraction part of the machine does very little in determining the taste of your espresso. The grinder is what matters most. I'd say the two grinders are very comparable and would make very little difference in taste. Why I think choice gave the Ninja a better score is because it automatically changes grind size for you and eliminates the human factor in having to dial in the Breville manually (side note, the Breville has a removable burr internally that can also change grind size, and I've discovered that I have to change it to get a better tasting coffee). I'd say the Ninja is definitely the better 'no think I just want a coffee' machine, especially at this price, as it does lots of the heavy lifting for you. If you were to delve down the coffee rabbit hole, you wouldn't even bother about getting a dual function machine, rather getting a solo brewer and a much better grinder.
is the grinder on the ninja any good or is it sh$t
It's good enough for this use case, tiny but worst than a Fellow Opus, probably on par with the Breville
Is breville better than Ninja? What about Sunbeam?
Me chilling with my La Marzocco Linea Mini just having made my morning coffee at home 😁
Good price happy with mine
Hasn’t been long but I can’t fault mine yet after a week of use making two coffees a day. I’m coming from 5 years of using a Bambino Plus with a Smart Grinder Pro.
If given the chance to go back in time. Would you stick with a bambino plus and smart grinder pro combo? Or switch to the all in one ninja?
I’d probably say the Ninja. Workflow wise it’s fairly similar but I am enjoying the way the Ninja measures the grinder output (I was only using the SGP as a single dose grinder) so that saves times on the Ninja with not having to weigh out 18g of beans twice each morning. It’s a relatively smaller footprint being an all in one which helps in our tiny kitchen too.
The extra coffee options like cold brew and drip/filter coffee and cold milk frothing are a bonus. You can queue up your milk steaming too, so start your espresso shot, hit start on the milk and it’ll pull your shot and then go straight into steaming your milk.
It’s got a few other QoL improvements over the Bambino that I came to get tired of like the Bambino’s tiny drip tray and no empty water notification which is something I enjoy having and the backwash function on the Bambino forced you to do it without overriding so if you were in the middle of making two coffees, you had to stop and spend 15 mins doing a clean before you could continue.
I don’t think you can go wrong with either set up but so far and perhaps it’s the honeymoon period of having a new machine, I’m not regretting the decision. Oh and my wife can make her own cappuccinos now too, so that’s another win!
Someone said the cleaning on the ninja is really easy. Would you say thats true? That has been our main reservation for getting one, because my wife had experience with an old coffee machine at work and thinks theyre a nightmare to keep clean.
@Bigredkeg: It’s easy. Just a wipe down of any small coffee splashes after use. Empty the drip tray every second day or so depending on how many coffees are made and a brush of the grinder burrs at least once a month or every few weeks, again depending on how much beans you’re putting through.
Steam wand auto purges after use and needs a quick wipe down with a warm cloth to get the dried milk off (that goes for any steaming wand) but beyond that not much else that would make it ‘hard’ to clean.
I have a Bambino Plus and keen to get the Ninja, but there seem to be quite a few reviews reporting inconsistent water dosing and unreliable brew ratio settings.
I've also seen reports of leaks, whether from a misaligned water tank, worn reservoir gasket, clogged brew basket, or simply an overflowing drip tray.
Would love to hear from current owners — have these issues been common in your experience, or are they being overstated online?
This or the phillips 4400?
I've heard the ninja isn’t great with soy milk. 1st world problems lol
Hubby drinks normal latte, i swap between soy iced latte and soy latte
I went from the 4400 to the Ninja a few months ago and much prefer the ninja. I was ready to get away from a fully auto machine. The milk section of the Ninja let's you pick either Dairy or Plant Based so not sure if that will help the quality of Soy froth.
I can let you know. I just picked one up and will set it up tonight. Will try with Bonsoy.
Keen to hear too!
Okay! I'm unboxing. Went and got some of the Luxe beans from Aldi. Going to do one with Bonsoy and one with Milk Lab Almond. I will post with an update!
@mezzmorized @nosey
I’ve just made my first lattè using Bonsoy milk and the top came out nice and thick (how I like it). Very similar to a coffee shop. I think the Ninja did a pretty good job for my first attempt. I will make another lattè today using Milk Lab almond milk. I will post some pictures as soon as I work out how to link an image.
Thanks! Bought one as a fellow bonsoy drinker :)
Thanks for taking one for the team :-)
There is a smaller version of this machine which was released a few weeks ago, should i wait for it or just order this one ?
They usually don't discount the new stuff until demand dies right down. Then they start going half price.
The promo code is not working after price beat.
It works. Go into the checkout and enter the promo code there.
Worked with the price beat button for me. Didn't work after getting a lower price via chat.
I bought it for $480 during the 12% off
No regrets?
No. Once you get the right beans and files it in. You need to manually froth then it's night and day. I use airjo enterprise beans
So this still has the steam arm to manually froth milk if you want to?
@VLine90: Yes, use the same steam arm as the auto frother. Take the steam wand out, select the least foam option (the first setting), then press and hold the froth button for 3 seconds. Wait a few seconds for it to start.
For those comparing the Barista Express and the Luxe, i've done pretty much all the comparisons this last month.
Go with the barista express if you are confident you can dial in the coffee and want to spend time learning how to make it. Prepare to buy extra gear.
For those that want a more hands off experience go for the Ninja Luxe. It dials in the coffee pretty well and you won't really need to purchase any other gear, unless you want to up your coffee game (but at that point, I'd argue it's better to go for the Barista Express). It can also do cold press which is nice as well.
Catches with the Luxe are that some people report leaking and a relatively small drop tray.
@seepy Can you please tell us about the infusion system under the shower screen?
Breville has a small single hole only on the right side. It's rubbish to be fair.
The dual boiler, oracle have multi point infusion.
I have a speed controller on my Barista Express pump. Makes very good flow profiled coffee, but will never be excellent without an even infusion.
If the Ninja has a proper infusion system, id consider swapping.
Are you refering to the baskets? "Breville has a small single hole only on the right side. It's rubbish to be fair"
The machine ships with (4x) single and dual-wall filter baskets
If the basket you are currently using has a single hole you are using the dual-wall basket, sugest if you are grinding coffee to use the single wall basket rather… (check the box as this and most Breville machines include all the options)
UPDATE: Ah, OK, I see you're referring to the shower screen. You can also buy upgraded shower screens for many Breville machines, which may help distribute the water more evenly if you're not happy with the standard one.
Personally, I've found the default screen works fine with pre-infusion on my Dual Boiler so not sure how good/bad it is on the BES870, good luck!
P.S. I also use paper filters this might help with your water dissipation issue possible (else you can also get discs) however I also find using this filter also significantly helps with keeping the machine cleaner (backwashing) which is not a big issue really but though I would share this with you as well:
https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0B5DNGFWV - I believe the Breville The Barista Express BES870 has a 54mm size but best check this
Hi. Aftermarket Shower screens dont help, as the water outlet is still on the right side only. It's part of the group head…I made my own out of thick foil, blocking the hole and creating multiple holes at 45 degrees away from the single hole…Much better with 3 infusion points, but still trash compared to a proper machine.
The dual boiler has a 6 point infusion system (underneath the shower screen). But I prefer a 53mm basket and pid thermoblock system. Also prefer the built in grinder with baratza burrs…..
But…it does need the pump on a controller and it does need the infusion modified. A default Barista Express is still a bit rubbish.
If anyone has a ninja and is cleaning their shower screen, please look underneath and see where the water comes from.
I've found the shower to not be an issue on my unit. Most of the water comes out centrally and there is a small shower around the sides. I do have a screen with my bottomless portafilter and use that to make my coffee and it comes out just fine.
I don't notice a huge difference with and without the screen either. I've only made a few coffees out of it, but I'm not noticing an impact at all.
I definitely encourage getting a better portafilter than the Breville one. The default one is a pain to clean and drips everywhere.
I think you're confusing the difference between pre-infusion and where the water comes out of the machine?
Pre-infusion makes a difference 100%.
After the void between the puck and shower screen is filled with water, where water comes in from is pretty irrelevant as all its doing now is providing pressure to a evenly distributed bed of water.
While I kind of agree…that once away it' doesnt mattter. But by then the damage is done. The right side experiences more preinfusion than the left…
When it channels, it's almost the right side every time. Many are making channel @ss water, but think it's better than instant… So on a winner. Almost no YouTube BES extractions are half decent. Id wager 90% have some channeling. Which is also due to some BES machines running a spring adjusted to 12 bar or more. Mine was.
At the end of the day, having water come in from one side makes no sense. Make it from the middle at least!
None of the higher end machines have a single entry from one side. All they needed was an alloy diffuser before the shower screen, or a multi hole group head (as they do on the 58mm machines).
So keeping my eye out for a thermoblock all in one machine that does. But might yield and get a used Oracle and add my pump dimmer.
Can anyone compare this to Breville Barista Touch? Was keen on the Breville but after using it a while there are a few areas it could be better. Not interested in the Express as I want auto (jug based) milk for other family members. I imported/wholesaled coffee for 15 years, I want speed, not the experience.
I believe this one can make instant cold brew. My boss have one and could not stop praising it
Waiting for the new version with auto tamp
We have this in our workplace. Gets used 5-10 times a day. 5 days a week. Has done for nearly a year.
Its such a good machine for the price.
That's great, as I mentioned below, the Barista Touch is 1500 and the only at work might make 10 coffees a day? It's 2 months old and I'm ready to give up on it.
I'm thinking of getting this coming from a nespresso pod machine but the reviews are all over the place, but I want to try up my game from pods and try beans, is this good? I know it's not amazing but I just want something good for the price
You’ve just described yourself as the exact user Ninja we’re aiming for with this - someone who wants to move away from pods but doesn’t yet want to dive into a full manual experience.
I have owned Nespresso pod machines for over 15 years and currently have a Creatista Plus. My go to is 2 pods with whisked milk from my aerocino 4 (prefer this to using the Creatista for milk).
I upgraded last night and made my first coffee this morning. Coming from the Nespresso, it’s not as simple as popping my two pods in, but it is very easy and I made a lattè in about two-three minutes - it’s pretty much foolproof.
I grabbed a bag of the Aldi Luxe beans on the way home last night to get me started as they were recommended on a Ninja Luxe page. You can definitely tell a difference in the taste between the Nespresso pods and the Ninja Luxe. I think this was the perfect ‘next step’ for me.
I wanted the Barista Touch but with capsules, so was thinking Creatista Pro. But the panarello style wand on the touch at work is pissing me off, figured the creatista would be the same. Have had many semi auto machines over the years so hope this isn't a mistake. Cautiously optimistic. Was thinking of Daley Street beans from Coles, as they have hands down the best capsules imo. Will check out Aldi.
I'll check out the beans next time I'm at Coles. Thanks!
I'd always thought of Ninja the same as I do Shark etc, a cheap TV Shopping Network type brand but seeing more well off people buying a bunch of their stuff lately and raving about how great it is. Is it or are they just marketing hard and it is cheap TVSN rubbish mostly?
I think the time when it was last TV rubbish was about a decade ago.
OK, so it's not vaporware anymore? It's quality stuff that lasts a reasonable amount of time and does the thing it's supposed to better than something from like a k-mart in house brand?
Looks good also!
We need more competition for breville and the likes…
Finally convinced myself to jump in after reading through this review:
https://coffeegeek.com/reviews/fullreview/ninja-luxe-cafe-pr…
I've got it home and while I don't love the looks, after calibrating it seems to make a good shot of espresso.
The Brevilles are much better looking, but the Breville Touch's wand always needing further cleaning is pissing me off, especially at ~$1500. Will pick this up this afternoon and see how we go.
Used Samsung Wallet to get 6% off Ultimate Everything Gift card. Total cost $426.76. Pick up was ready within 15 minutes of order.
Damn, went to buy it then and looks like the pricebeat option has expired
lol the breville bros think they have some premium machine vs this
They're a solid machine which last many years and offer a bit more manual control. They have a good reputation for a reason. Hopefully the Ninja can last thousands and thousands of cups of coffee like my breville has.
I get you're happy with the Breville but this is a deal on a ninja. Why do we need to defend our purchases?
Ok, have made my first two flat whites. The shots themselves are fine, though I'd just prefer a timer. The auto barista jumps 5 grind steps at a time, but I've settled on a grind 2 steps away from its recommendation. The milk is my main issue as the machine's finest auto milk setting is terrible. If you want decent micro froth, it appears you'll be doing it yourself. If that's the case, might as well get the Barista Express and skip all the 'help' this machine gives.
What milk are you using? I only use non-dairy milk, but I've tried Bonsoy, Milklab Almond and Milklab Oat and all have given decent results.
Full cream dairy milk. I thought the auto milk could get near Breville, but they are worlds apart. I'll keep trying though, perhaps some combination of settings will get there.
Made about 20 coffees with this machine so far and love it. No machine comparison point as only coming from Lor pods but best thing I've bought in last 12 months. Feels almost comparable to my $6.50 soy fw, so very happy.
Breville Barista Express $518 for those who want to make better quality coffees
