Quick disclosure
I'm the developer. I won't pretend PumpWatch is the only fuel comparison app around, it isn't. What's different is every price is mandatory retailer-reported government data, not scraped or user-submitted.

Pro adds Route Mode (cheapest fuel stop along a Google Maps route), price trend history and heatmaps, 10 saved filters, and removes ads.

Why 3 months, not lifetime
I'm a solo developer, and this app runs on real costs: government API access, hosting, the usual. Lifetime Pro giveaway sounds nice but isn't sustainable for something I want to keep funded and running. Three months is enough to actually road-test it through your normal driving, without giving away the thing that pays for it.

What you get: three months of Pro on an app I'm actively still building.

      Fair call out, PetrolSpy's solid and has a great community behind it. Different approach though: it's crowdsourced, so prices are whatever the last person manually typed in. PumpWatch pulls straight from the government feeds each state's retailers are legally required to report to (FuelCheck/ServoSaver/FuelWatch/etc), so there's no lag waiting on someone to drive past and update it. Different trade-offs, not knocking PetrolSpy, just explaining why I built another one.

        What will you do if someone builds exactly the same app and charges $1 less per month? Given almost anyone can vibe code an app now, have you considered the resources required to fight copycats?

          Can't really stop that, and don't think I'd want to try. I don't own the underlying data, it's government data, so I've got no copyright claim over "an app that shows government fuel prices." I built PumpWatch because I wasn't happy with how the existing apps handled it, not to lock up the idea. If someone builds a better version for less, people are free to use whichever they like.

          Fair, as I understand it PetrolSpy does pull in some government data as a cross-check (NSW FuelCheck, from what I could find), but not across every state, that was my understanding when I built PumpWatch anyway, could be out of date. Either way, you're free to use whichever app works best for you.

        To be clear: the app itself is completely free, no payment or subscription needed for the core features, live map, price alerts, filtering, all of it. Pro just adds extras (Route Mode, price trend history/heatmaps, more saved filters) and drops ads. This code is for people who want those extras free for 3 months, it's not a requirement to use the app at all.

      Government data is free, hosting it isn't. Every state exposes its feed differently, so it's five separate ingest pipelines that pull, normalise and dedupe prices around the clock, sitting on top of a database, servers, and Google Maps API calls for Route Mode, that's before app store fees. None of that is free to run at scale.

      The core app, live map, price alerts, filtering, is free with no subscription, full stop. Pro is optional and pays for the infra so the free tier keeps running. Same model as basically every free app with a paid tier. Happy to be transparent about it, that's kind of the point of this post.

      Just expires, no charge. Redeeming the code doesn't touch a card at all, it's not a free trial that rolls into a subscription. Sign-in is only email/Apple/Google so the redemption can be tied to one account, that's it, no payment method attached anywhere in that flow. After 3 months you just drop back to the free tier unless you separately choose to subscribe from the paywall.

    I’ve used PetrolSpy for years and find the ads very annoying, with it too easy to click on an ad than close the app.

    Just installed PumpWatch and so far appreciate the clean interface. Redeemed Pro and will give it a go.

      Appreciate the feedback! yeah trying to keep the ads as non-intrusive as possible, could definitely make more money if they were more annoying but I had the same issue with PetrolSpy when I used that

        I don’t mind the Google Maps approach.. with a few paid map location advertisement icons while looking at the map… because it’s relevant (that business is nearby) and doesn’t overtake the interface

    • PetrolSpy is $2.89 a year ad-free (or also free with ads but I suspect 'more'), they also offer a $14.99 lifetime licence. By comparison, this app costs $9 per quarter ($36 a year) with ongoing fees (but also offers a free add supported version), I did think PetrolSpy also pulled from gov sources too (could be wrong).

    • One suggestion to add more value: incorporate fuel discounts from popular programs such as fuel cards, Ampol discounts, Flybuys, 7-Eleven Fuel Lock, RACQ (Queensland), and similar offers. Allowing users to apply the discounts, memberships, or loyalty programs they already have could provide more accurate savings comparisons and help differentiate the app from existing fuel price apps.

    -Good luck with the app, but the ongoing pricing seems quite high for something many people might only use once or twice a month. That said, for people who spend a lot of time on the road, the routing feature could be a useful addition and offers value.

      Appreciate the feedback. Yep, pricier than PetrolSpy, that's real money I need to cover running this though. Loyalty program integration is something I'm looking into, but it needs buy-in from each company and that's a hard sell at the user base size I'm at right now. Definitely on the radar.

      Not at this stage, have looked into it. Pretty tight restrictions on how apps are allowed to function on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay so quite a bit of work but definitely something I would like to do

    Well it's a nice looking app but I can't imagine anyone in NSW paying for it when you've got NSW FuelCheck, maybe a state without government mandated fuel pricing reporting will find it a value.

    One thing I did notice is the lack of station logos against the fuel price on the map, which is a feature that both PetrolSpy and NSW FuelCheck offer.

      Yeah, feel free to use it. Great that there's a free app with no ads out there. Not sure how they're covering hosting costs, but that's a real cost I have to account for, recovering it through subscriptions or ads, and I've tried to keep the ads as unintrusive as possible.

    RAA petrol app in SA is government endorsed. WA has fuel watch, but they only change their prices once a day at 6:00 am and have to disclose the next day's price the afternoon before. Both are free. But good luck.

    Really nice job with a clean interface OP. But having played with it for some time (20 min or so) and really wanted to like it - but dont think Ill make the permanant switch even with the pro just yet, reasons as follows:
    1. Usability: I prefer on the map to see logos of the vendor at first glance. Now you have just empty callouts with just the price.
    2. Functional reliability: Looking at the trend graph avg price has shot from 181.6 to 216 from yesterday to today(note your tool tip details callout has been trimmed to the screen edge). I dont see any fuel pumps in the map above 200.
    3. Nice to have feature: since we are after vendor specific vouchers will be nice to have a filter by vendor (ie select Shell OTR vs Shell Reddy express). That will give you a clear advantage over other apps.
    4. Functional issue: most of your fuel stations are greyed out with a warning 'Price is more than 4 days old' where same station on spy has updated 10 min ago or so.
    5. Design consideration: I like the filter by price and distance feature, but it is based on the postal code location (FYI my suburb was not in the postal code options, you might have to get the latest registry) and not my currrent location. so it makes the good features a waste.

      1. I'll look into adding logos, seems there might be some trademark issues using company logos but I will see what I can do
      2. Seems some dodgy/placeholder pricing from official sources is skewing the graphs, will look to fix this up
      3. You can already create a filter and specify vendors/brands you want to include or exclude and I am trying to get discounts into the app but relies on companies playing ball
      4. This should be resolved now, please let me know if there are more than expected that are still greyed out
      5. When you setup the filter you can filter by GPS location which will follow you rather than have a fixed location (your postcode should be available, if you share what it is I can try investigate)
