acquiring other AV solutions doesn't necessarily make one AV 'good'. Altho the definition of good varies user to user.

Norton was better "before" they acquired Avast and Avira.
I am pretty sure they took Avast/Avira's engine and definitions and branded it to Norton. So maybe it's 'good' as the installer and memory footprint was smaller than the 2010s Norton. But it is subjective and everyone is an expert on what they like/need/want. I am highly biased as i am ex-symantec so i know 2010s Norton was industry leading. But i respect everyone has their own opinion, so please respect mine too.

LOL. As some one that worked in the industry. I can tell you this is absolutely not true.
When I was kid we use to use macfee, avast antivirus and whenever we install those virus our computer starting slowing down and after couple of days it start showing us that computer has virus.
Ah, what you were tricked into were probably the overly loud alerts and notices, designed to semi-scare/remind you into actually PAYING for a subscription / updates. It might have been as simple as cookies or BHOs and it would warn you and made it sound like your PC is infected. Or you might legit have viruses.

They did slow down the computer, couldn't get around that as they examined every file you touch both browsing and opening.
The viruses they found were likely tracking cookies

Didn’t know Norton even still existed! I’m using free Avira and that seems to be good enough. Just have to put up with occasional pop ups encouraging me to take up their paid subscription.
I suspect the same engine and virus definition now, they are owned by the same parent company.
If you watch a couple virus tests, you'll see windows defender scores incredibly high these days. Combine that with smartscreen and you have everything you need, though i find smartscreen a little annoying.
