  • Perfect for minilabs in 10" 3D printed racks.

    • Can confirm, I have a cluster with 2 of these and a HP Elite Book (which doesn't fit in the 10" rack)

        • Yes, they use SODIMM. It has 2 slots. If it's just 1 16GB stick, easier to upgrade. If it comes with 2 x 8GB sticks, going to bit more difficult.

          I managed to get a 16GB off FB Marketplace, same brand and speed as the one already inside, for $55. Brand new, more in the range of ~$130.

      They are absolutely reliable, solid and efficient machines for home server / home lab stuff.

      • Might be the monitor holding it back, I think most people who buys this on OzBargain are connecting to their TV or it's gonna sit in a cupboard without a monitor attached at all, IE, JellyFin and the Arrs.

      • I had 13/14th Gen AIOs and no local market for them in Brisbane. Getting offers of $300, Ebay went for $900 but is about $100 to ship.

        Would agree it's the monitor holding them back and makes it a Pita for shipping. The minis easily ship.

    • at most you have one nmve and one sata so if you want to buy a das it would be ok but you can use a vastly cheaper usff pc to do the same… even something like 4th gen and sub $100 would be fine

    • Pcie lanes are the issue. Depending on the array you are planning, it is at best inconvenient. But doable, there are plenty of 3D printed enclosures just to do that.

    • Assuming you just want it for media, get a couple of these (or similar - just make sure it supports UASP) and plug in drives as you need. I use SnapRAID but something like UnRAID would work as well. These little PCs come with a Windows license so you can just use that for the OS.

      Alternatively, don't use any sort of RAID & get a Backblaze subscription (if you keep stuff that's hard to find) or be prepared to re-download in the case of a drive failure.

      Not the prettiest thing in the world (does it matter if it's hidden in a cupboard?), but functional and convenient.

    • I hacked one of these 1L mini-PC motherboards into my old HP N36L for a very nice NAS/other use box.

      • Ooooooh I'm keen to learn more. My N36L is really struggling these days and getting frustrating with it taking time to do things. It's also struggling to serve media to VLC on the TV.

        The motherboards in the micro pcs don't have SATA slots, how do you attach more drives to it in the N36L case?

        • To just serve media, put in an old video card to do the video decoding. I put in a GT 1030 2GB, cost around $50, and does h265 at 4k.

          Otherwise, if you want 9 SATA lanes there are cards available for that, too.

          Look on Youtube, there are a few people who have gone overboard with upgrading the N36/40/54 chassis.

  • Is this overkill to run HA, plex server? If I need more storage do I need to purchase additional ssd?

    Absolutely new to media servers and HA however would love to learn.

    • unless you can fit all your shit on 256gb then of course you need HDDs or an array

      this thing is fast enough for a HA and plex except perhaps on video but i think onboard is quite good

      • I have an NVIDIA shield pro with a external Samsung T7 portable SSD plugged in for storage. It works perfectly. It takes a little bit of setting up and some learning to be able to remotely put content on the drive, but it works great and sits behind the tv, so you wouldn't know it was there.

        • Do you have a link explaining how to remotely put content on the drive? I have the same setup and would love to be able to do that. Do you use Plex?

            Then in plex you can instruct it to use one or more of those to participate in that library.
            Plex is rarely implemented on internal disks because many 10s of TB often do not fit in many computer cases anymore

      Your media will live on external drives probably in a DAS enclosure.

      The alternative route is to buy a NAS and run Plex Server and HA directly on it.

      • Makes sense! Overall goal is a bit of learning accross networking, HA and managing a media server. Will look into additional storage down the line.

      • Yes it is as it's only an office PC. I don't think anyone's going to be using this for gaming so no need for a large internal storage.

    • Running a pretty decent HA setup on a 7070. Includes 700+ line yaml for solar, batteries, pool, HWS, EV charging etc.

    • If you already have a nas based on old hardware, you can just buy this and save compute in your nas for storage-only tasks while this handles everything else.

      • Except for electricity having two units running 24/7

        To make round numbers, even at less than 100 watts, let's say 2kw per day, it's like 50c a day to run. (Assuming 25kw for electricity)
        Over a year its 180 a year to run…. Better off putting in extra and getting a dedicated low power unit, it will pay for itself over the life of the unit.

        Real world Idle should be far less electricity, but you get the idea..

        (Maybe 20% of that so still looking at 50 bux or so…a year to run extra hardware, if the device will run for 5 years that's still 250 bux… Better if spend on a single dedicated unit)

              • @pinkybrain: I bought a gen 8 microserver, then only this year moved to a aoostar wtr max. But that's quite a bit different kettle of fish… has some serious compute… and more $$$ than we are talking here…

                What you've listed should be fairly low requirements. Depends what your after in regards to storage, wtr pro maybe?

                The 5825u is a low power powerhouse as well.

                Few people reported issues (seems to be more around the intel n100/150) most seem fine.

                If you you want easy, it runs ugos, which will run your apps you listed. Or like you said, install proxmox

        • Well you can always just lower the power usage by having less programs running on your nas, which is what this should help with.

    • I use one of these (but a 12500t cpu) as a Plex server and it's amazing. I have Plexpass (have had it for years), and it transcodes multiple streams at once.

      I have all of my media on NAS set up with NFS (the Dell is running Linux).

          The 12500t has a newer slightly higher spec iGPU compared to the 11500t (the 10k series has the same iGPU as the 11k CPUs.).

  • I've purchased 2 different refurb 7090s from past deals. One had the one 16GB stick and the other 2 8GB sticks, which made it harder to upgrade the RAM since both slots were now taken. Couldn't find a mention of it in this listing.

  • Great for HA. I have my setup on a 7090.

    • You can do a lot more than HA with one.

      Run it as a VM on Proxmox, LXCs, other VMs…

      • Yep 100%. I run HAOS as a VM and heaps of other lxc's.

        They're great little devices which have low power draw.

            It really depends on how much you want to store on it, I store everything on NAS.

                I could run immich on it via docker on the Ubuntu vm but I run it on my unraid server.

            But for lxc's which may require more storage like plex etc I have network shares from my nas which the lxc's can access.

            Because I run proxmox I also run proxmox backup server as a VM on my NAS as well.

      There are reasons why people want the 1L form factor.

      • Yessss. I've got a deskpi T0 with a 7080 optiplex and a 3d printed mount, ucg fiber 3d printed mount and a keystone jack both sides + another 3d mounted ubiquiti poe switch. It's so good. And so much easier to move around. Especially when we move (we rent), instead of a bajillion cables, it's basically just 2-3 now in and we're off/set back up again.

        I also bought the deeper T0 version but currently it just holds my 4 bay synology nas so it all looks more matchy matchy ha

    • The SFF also has pcie slot for 2.5 or 10gbe network card

      • You can generally convert the M.2 WiFi card slots with a pcie card off aliexpress to a 2.5gb nic though (just make sure you get an Intel one)

          Realek 2.5Gb pcie works fine, cheaper than an Intel one.

            Proxmox/Linux just generally works better (or at least, more consistently, with Intel nics over realtek or mediatek). Not saying realtek won't work but kind of a tried and true thing

    • Almost all of these ex office or whatever refurbs will have a pro license attached to them. Otherwise they couldn't really be fleet managed properly by whatever org had them before

      • Thanks! Asked the seller and they said it comes with variations of home or pro and will do their best to give me Pro. Best yeah, I agree, I would imagine that would mostly come with pro as they are ex office.

  • Just be aware that these use T series CPU's which are capped at 35W. That can limit performance under sustained workloads.

    • Not sure what you are implying - do you think the non-T CPUs can perform "sustained" workloads better than the T processors?
      Looking at reviews of Optiplex micros with the higher power non-T 65w processors, such as those on servethehome, seem to suggest that the (non optimised cooling) design of dell's optiplex micros are more suited to the lower power 35W T processors. They seem to fairly consistently (across multiple generations) get the non-T CPUs to thermally throttle pretty quickly, like in a minute or two of full CPU utilisation. They suggest that the competitors (lenovo, HP) have more venting, might run the 65w CPUs better.
