I tried a bottle recently of Nangkita Premium Shiraz 2021 Single Vineyard and thought it was really good.

Classic SA weight, but with great balance and elegance. It was smooth on the palate with fine tannins.

Gold Medal at the London Wine Competition 2023 + 95 points from Wine Orbit.

Bold and impressively styled, the wine shows black/blueberry, violet, cured meat and toasty oak characters. The palate delivers excellent depth and persistency, wonderfully framed by layers of fine tannins. Flavoursome and delectably appealing. At its best: now to 2038. By Sam Kim Nov 2022.

      It was being sold at Virgin Wines @ $75 per bottle, and currently still available through Dan's Marketplace with delivery at $75 per bottle.

      Saying that, RRP on most wines these days are ridiculous. I think even if it was only 50% off its a great deal, but only because I have tried the wine and I thought it was a good drop. :)

        Richard Hardy is charging sub $60 for 6 bottles without the ridiculous RRP.

          Did they win a Gold medal? The total entry pool for the entire 2023 competition was ~1,300 wines across all varietals, styles, and 32 countries.

          Only 18 Shiraz got Gold Medals.

          I am sure the Richard Hardy wines are good, I have enjoyed many of their other wines in the past. I wouldn't compare a Single Vineyard release with 95 points, and a Gold Medal to a Regional release with 91-92 points. Wine Pilot hands out similar scores to Sam Kim.

            Single vineyard leans towards uniqueness and limited volume, not necessarily good. Bec Hardy wines have plenty of single vineyard wines though, that's not uncommon. But it's the kind of thing to find a unique expression or it's a particularly good area, it's not a sign that the wine is good

            Wine awards are a dime a dozen. The wines pay to be entered and can rack up medals like no tomorrow. It's just marketing. This also got a gold in the same year, it's $12 at Dan's. And sure, it's a good wine at that price. It's one of many good wines at that price.

            Also I count 21 gold medal shiraz's. And Shiraz is only one type of that 1,300

            It's a way of marketing wine. The likes of Sam Kim and Wine Pilot charge to get the wine reviewed. Wine competitions charge to get the wine entered, then the winemakers use it for marketing. It's a standard part of the industry used to boost the price or get people to pick it up off the shelf and give it a try. But unless you've actually tried this and compared to similar wines, I don't know how you justifying saying it's a great buy at 50% off.

              @freefall101: Fair points, and I don't disagree with most of what you said & the points and medals system are definitely a marketing machine.

              That said, a few things from my perspective:

              Single Vineyard: It’s not a guarantee of greatness, but it at least shows provenance. When a bottle lists no vineyard or sub-region at all, 99% of the time it’s generic, cheap bulk fruit.

              Medals & Scores: It’s pay-to-play, but it’s still competitive. Golds 90-95+ aren't handed to everyone, and high-end benchmark Shiraz (like d’Arenberg The Dead Arm or Taylors Jaraman) enter these exact same shows. Plus, in today's brutal market, wineries need every badge they can get.

              Production Quality: Comparing this to a $10 commercial line isn't really fair. The oak regime, fruit selection, and style are completely different beasts.

              The "Discount": Places like Vinomofo run Pertaring ranges at 70-80% off all the time, reviewed by the exact same critics. So $15 down from $75 isn't as crazy or inflated as it sounds on paper for this tier of wine.

              End of the day, wine is subjective and heavily hyped, which is why I try to only post deals on stuff I’ve actually tried and bought with my own money. Just sharing what I think is solid value in a super crowded market!

              Skye Cellars, like Vinomofo have an amazing return policy. You can try a bottle from what you buy and if you don't like it, return the rest for a refund. That's amazing from both retailers, which makes it a much safer buy.

                @ultrakaos: Yeah, a lot of good points. I agree that at this price point the Nangkita is a good wine. However it's not a bargain at 50% off the retail, it's good at $15. I also wouldn't put it above the Bec Hardy wines, having had both (although I've not had the 2021 of the Nangkita). I don't think it's fair to try trash one wine to support another based on any of the things you gave.

                I'm also a big defender of Bec Hardy and the Hardy wines in general. I've been to the winery, they aren't a mass producer. If you buy their base level shiraz it's coming from a couple of vineyards (if not one). The blends can be a good thing.

                At the end of the day, you can get many good wines at the $15 price point. It is a brutal market and I agree it's unfair on wineries, because it's stupidly hard to generate a $75 wine. I've had Hardy's Yeoman when it used to be $300 a bottle and I honestly think it's worth $300 a bottle - they sell it for $100 these days. I'd take it over a Grange, but that's the market.

                But that's wine. The best bottle of wine I've ever had cost $50. I wish I could go back in time and buy 100 bottle of it, I'd drink it ever weekend.

                  It's the current state of the industry, and I just do my best to guide/post what I believe is decent wines. However, if 20 people buy a wine there will always be someone which the wine isn't to their taste. That's just wine.

      I think it’s just that people mostly see the 95+ point wines being pushed, while the 91–93 point stuff gets overlooked.

      While Sam Kim may hand out 95 points more often than not, I believe only 20-30 wines out of 300ish receive a Gold Medal at the London Wine Competition annually.

      The reality is, with modern winemaking, it’s not that hard for a producer to buy decent bulk grapes and pull 91 or 92 points.

      That’s why single-vineyard wines are different, the fruit comes strictly from one site (like Nangkita Vineyard).

      You’ll see plenty of 90-93 point wines labeled broadly as South Australia, Barossa or McLaren Vale as examples that are just made from higher-yield bulk fruit. Even when a specific vineyard is involved, different winemakers pay completely different prices per tonne to secure the best blocks.

            @FrugalFreddy: I want to clarify that I’m not an employee, or commercially affiliated with SkyeCellars. I’m just an avid wine fan who buys/tracks deals across a few sites and shares what I consider good value.

            That said, I hear where you’re coming from and looking back at my post history, I can totally see how it looks.

            I do post on various wine groups, and I am more selective about what I post on Ozbargain.
