However, whether we like it or not, it is discrimination if we despise every game with a female lead. We are only humans. If we cannot even admit that's discrimination, we are no better than the pro left people. Gears' characters have always been quite diverse so it is hard to pick on Gears to be honest.

@netsurfer: I said EVERY media. I doubt people would have an issue if it happened sporadically, its when suddenly everything has to have the same archetypical character chucked in there. The thing people miss is there have been many many popular and well thought out Girl Action characters that no-one had an issue with. Its when its done purely for virtue signalling and its just been randomly chucked in there as well as the character doesnt really have to learn or improve, they are perfect and all powerful from the get go. so many tv shows have been ruined by that. I actually enjoyed all the Gears games, i was just pointing out that its NOT discrimination to fight against discrimination.

Nope, I had to check too, and it very much did not win.
I'm sure someone named it their personal of the year, but no major publication I could find easily did. It was nominated, sure, as every big boy game of the year is, but it didn't seemingly win from anyone.
It's far from the first game to think a nomination means you can do a rerelease under the GOTY banner, though. In a world where there can be a dozen games per year rereleased as "GOTY editions", the phrase really doesn't mean (profanity) all anymore.
I just assume terms like GOTY, Definitive & Complete editions all mean the same thing nowadays.
I always interpreted it as "this is the edition we're submitting for awards consideration". So it might include polish or expansions or extra content that didn't make sense at launch, but the studio now views as part of the canonical experience.

Everything post-Gears 3 is like playing terrible fan fiction. Gears either needed to embrace the dudebro and just turn it up to 11 and turn it into a joke or turn up the horror and make the games scarier and more stressful.
Gears Tactics was after 3. It's a great game (with some glaring issues).

Being a fan of both the god of War series and Gears series back in 2006– 201x, it’s amusing to see both Sony and Microsoft rebooting the franchise, and honestly the new god of War series was a masterpiece, because the game was kind of developed for the same player base 10 years ago but knowing they have aged and are in a different stage of life. The Gears franchise, though, was just trash.

Never played a Gears game but I am curious, that 120gb install though for an 2019 game, ouch!
I think it was initially 60-80? Now it's got that hivebusters DLC among other updates. 120GB is still fairly large though, but if I'm not mistaken it's gone the CoD route and lets you choose what parts you want to install
Might be a 4K DLC being automatically installed?
It's a good game and worth the 120gb install, but it's better if you played Gears 4 first. And no spoilers, but Gears 5 isn't a complete story. It's waiting for Gears 6 to wrap it up but there's no hint Gears 6 is even in development.

Depends how much you enjoy solo, covershooter campaigns.

I think the series Gears-style gameplay is still quite good. The story is pretty meh but for roughly 5 bucks why not.
Nice! This has been on my wishlist for ages. Got the email this morning but didn't realise there was a GOTY edition and it's only $3 more. Glad I was to busy before work to make the purchase.
I've only played GoW 1 on PC (bought two copies, bro and I played through it in co-op). Was a great co-op romp. Hoping they do a port of 2, 3 and 4 to PC.
The GoW5 demo ran a little sluggish on my PC but I'll probably buy this now so it's there and ready when I get my next rig.
I've got Gears 5 GOTY through the Microsoft Store on PC. You see if you've bought Gears 5 on the Xbox console then you already have it on the PC through the Microsoft Store. As it's a play anywhere title. So if you have an Xbox console and you know you've bought it already on the console. Then check as you should already own the game on PC through the Microsoft Store. Unless you desperately also need it on Steam.
So i guess i'll have to pass.
Do I need to play the first 4?
Nah. Jump in, get given some basic understanding of the universe in a bit of an intro. Then more or less run and gun through the campaign. Mindless fun basically (if this rule of game suits you)
At least than a tenner if you get 10 hours out of it before your bored you've got your monies worth.
I kind of know it's about some alien invasion thing, and I played like 5 minutes of the first one at a friend's house. I know there's lots of finding cover which was fun.

Under Extras section, Gears 5 includes "Previously on Gears" (recapping Gears 4) and "State of the Universe" (explaining the wider series history).
Gears 1, 2, 3 is the first trilogy. The OG squad (in Gears 1-3) was super likeable. Gears 4 starts a new story arc.
However, technically, the cheapest way to play this game is 14-day PC GamePass trial for $1. If you are unsure about it, you could try it out for $1, not to mention there are lots of other games on PC GamePass.
The first 3 are their own story. While 4 and 5 are a follow up, you don't need to play the first 3. But you should at least watch a recap of 4 before playing 5.

Officially, Gears 2 and 3 are only on XBox. The cheapest way was to buy Gears of War Ultimate edition cheap (which contains voucher codes for Gears of War 1,2,3, judgement). Gears Reloaded is the latest remaster of Gears 1.
The best way to play them cheap used to be the $1 for the first month of GamePass Ultimate a few years ago.
I actually really enjoyed gears 5, this is from a long term gears fan too. You just have to go into it thinking of it as more of a side story, I still really enjoyed the story beats.

I get it's only $3 but is it worth it for Hivebusters? I'm a Gears fan and have even enjoyed games likes Judgment on the 360.
PC GamePass, $1 for 14 days, try out Hivebusters (you can also play Gears 5, 1 (Reloaded), 4 and Tactics), see if you like it first.
This is really for people who prefer Steam. For people who had GamePass, they most likely have played Gears of War series.

I own all the Gears games digitally on the Xbox (except for Tactics) and have finished some already a few times over but it annoys me not being able to revisit them on the Steam Deck.
The ability to play some on Windows via Play Anywhere helps but of course they don't work on the Deck natively. In my case scenario, I don't own and have never played Hivebusters so I can somewhat justify spending the $8. I just hate needlessly buying games over again.

Hivebusters is also on GamePass Essentials, which Microsoft appears to offer for $1 for the first month for new accounts or an account that doesn't have GamePass for a while. With the extra rewards points, you probably can get that $1 back in a month (you do need to use the GamePass app and Bing).
You still need a Microsoft account to play the game and it's a game you can pretty much play the next time you subscribe to any level of GamePass. If you will play it, buy it for $8 is fine. If it is just going to your pile of shame, then $8 for a DLC (since you own and played Gears 5) doesn't sound good so I guess that's why you were unsure.
Frankly, it is worthwhile to get PC GamePass for $1 at the moment because Halo: Combat Evolved (2026 remake) is included.

[PC] Free - Gears 5 (Xbox Play Anywhere) @ Xbox App? Microsoft offered $1 GamePass Ultimate for a month (new accounts) when Gears 5 was first released. It did feel a bit like beta testing the first two days (some bugs and saved game didn't save properly for me back then).

It is annoying PlayAnywhere version doesn't work on linux, so if we want XBox + PC + Steam deck, need to buy 2 copies.
It's still hard for me to let go of XBox, but the future looks grim. The $1 trick to play Halo: Combat Evolved (2026) now only works on PC, for XBox, it has to be GamePass Ultimate.
